FEKSI 2011: Bright Future for Indonesian Students Jakarta, December 22nd 2011 – The Indonesian Creative Economy Festival for High School Students (FEKSI) is aimed to motivate high school students to be able to diversify their choices for their future careers. The choices for their future career can be developed through education and career options in the field of creative economy, to induce entrepreneurship and enhance reading interest among the young generation throughout Indonesia. This was pointed out by the Minister of Trade Gita Wirjawan in the Grand Final of FEKSI 2011 that elicited the theme “Becoming an Independent and Proud Creativepreneur of Indonesian Products”. This program was held to build awareness on Creative Economy and to develop the sense of pride for Indonesian made Products among the young high school students in Indonesia. The program that was organized by the Ministry of Trade with the Association of Press Companies (SPS) offered the Minister of Trade Cup for the debate competition and writing competition. The team of jury included 3 representatives from the media, academicians and the creative economy community. FEKSI 2011 held a debate and writing competition under three sub themes namely, Creative Economy and National Economy Growth and Proud of Indonesian Products; Creative Economy and Entrepreneurship Culture. The Debate Competition was held in five cities Yogyakarta, Jakarta, Bandung, Palembang, and Semarang. Meanwhile the writing competition was held online, with participants coming from all over Indonesia that registered their writing entries via e-mail to the organizing committee. Five champions of the debate competition were selected from each city, namely, from Yogyakarta the winner was from SMAN 1 Yogyakarta; for Jakarta the winner was from SMAN 1 Bekasi; from Bandung the winner was from SMAK 2 BPK Penabur Bandung; for Palembang the winner was from SMAN 17 Plus Palembang; and from Semarang the winner was from SMA Semesta Semarang. Meanwhile the five champions for the writing competition were from SMAN 1 Yogyakarta, SMAN 1 Banjarbaru, SMK PGRI 1 Sentolo, SMAN 5 Bandung, dan SMAN 7 Yogyakarta. In the Grand Final of FEKSI 2011, the five champions were entered into the final competition and three winners were appointed from each category. The winners for the debate competition were: SMAK 2 BPK Penabur Bandung as the First Prize Winner; SMA Semesta Semarang as Second Prize winner; and SMAN 17 Plus Palembang as the Third Prize Winner.

Meanwhile for the First Winner of the Writing Competition was Rahadian Muslim from SMAN 5 Bandung; Second Prize Winner was Gigih Prastowo from SMK PGRI 1 Sentolo; and Third Prize Winner was Shofi Fatihatun Sholihah from SMAN 1 Yogyakarta. Brief Info on Creative Industry In Indonesia, the creative industry in the economy is quite significant in contributing to the GDP which averaged 7.74 % in 2002-2010 or equivalent to Rp 141.89 trillion. The Industry has absorbed employment of 7.6 million people annually during 2002-2010 with a participation rate of 7.76%. In terms of exports, the contribution of creative economy towards total export in 2002-2010 reached an average of 9.77%. The creative industry sector also has proven to be resistant to the global economic crisis in 2008. This is indicated by the contribution to the GDP from this sector which was Rp. 145.24 trillion or 6.97% of total GDP for Indonesia in 2008. Meanwhile in 2009, the contribution from the creative economy sector increased to 7.04% of Indonesia’s GDP and increased to 7.29% of GDP in 2010. In addition, the export value from 14 subsectors of the creative industry reached Rp. 116.65 trillion in 2009 and increased to Rp. 131.25 trillion in 2010, or in other words the export growth from the creative industry sector rose by 12.52% in 2010 compared to the position in 2009. The fourteen subsectors of the creative industry are Architecture; Design; Fashion; Film, Video and Photography; Handicraft; Computer Services and Software; Music; Art Market; Publishing and Printing; Advertising; Interactive Games; Research and Development Art Performance; Television and Radio. Considering the significant contribution from the creative industry towards Indonesia’s economy, it is therefore necessary to have a promotion campaign to promote the creative economy sector to a certain community target, particularly students and the younger generation that are potential creativepreneurs of Indonesia. Based on the data from the Central Bureau of Statistics and Sampoerna Foundation, in 2010 that only 11% of the work force in Indonesia, were university graduates. Furthermore, one out of every three high school graduates were unable to continue their studies to Higher Education and only 5-10% of high school graduates pursued their higher education in study programs in the creative economy sector including art, communication, design, broadcast, journalism, photography, animation, music, etc..
