Larry McKenna Trio feat. He has played and recorded with Woody Herman, Clark Terry, Buddy DeFranco, Tony Bennett, Rosemary Clooney and Frank Sinatra. He is much sought out as teacher of sax and music theory at University of the Arts, Temple, West Chester, Widener and Phila. Com. College. Johnny DeFrancesco Trio @ Shere-E-Punjab (9:30–12:45) with: Johnny (guitar/vocals), Glenn Ferracone (drums), Paul Klinefelter (bass) A native of the Philly suburbs, he belongs to the famous musical family that includes father Papa John and brother Joey, both Jazz organists. Primarily a Blues guitarist, he made his name in San Francisco backing Blues legends like John Lee Hooker and Ike Turner. Johnny has also been on the faculty of Berklee Music College in Boston. Pasquale Grasso Quartet from Arianio Irpino in Italy & NYC @ Ariano (10–1) with: Pasquale (guitar), Stefano Doglini (bass clarinet), Ari Roland (bass), Keith Balla (drums) An encore of last year’s very special night at Ariano. Pasquale was born in Ariano Irpino, Italy. He is the cousin of Anthony Bellapigna owner of Ariano Restaurant. Pasquale began playing guitar at a young age. He studied with Jazz Guitar innovator Agostino DiGiorgio, student of Chuck Wayne. Pasquale later worked with Bebop piano master Barry Harris. He pursued Classical Guitar Studies in the Music Conservatory of Bologna under Walter Zanetti. Pasquale developed a new approach to the guitar, combining Classical Tradition with Wayne’s modern technique. In 2012, Pasquale moved to New York City and quickly made a name for himself in the City’s vibrant Jazz Scene. He became part of the Ari Roland and the Chad Byers Quartets, performing in clubs, music festivals and recording in studios. In 2012, Pasquale was named Jazz Ambassador with the US Embassy, touring Europe, Kuwait, Kazakhstan, Cyprus, Lithuania and Ukraine. He has performed with leading musicians of the International Jazz Scene: Ari Roland, Luigi Grasso, Chris Byers, Zaid Nassar, Bucky Pizzarelli, China Moses, Harry Allen Quartet, Grant Stewart, Stepko Gut, Nicolas Dary, Dada Moroni, Agostino di Giorgio, Michel Pastre Big Band, Gianni Basso Big Band, Joe Cohn, Oscar Zenari and Luca Pisani. Peace, Poetry and Music with: Elliot (sax/flute), D.MHotep (guitar) Mr. Levin is a ubiquitous personage in our City of Brotherly Love; a Philly-born and based musician and poet. Elliot studied musical and literary composition at the U. of Oregon. He did further study with Michael Guerra of the Phila. Orchestra; pianist/composer/poet Cecil Taylor; flutist/composer Claire Polin; and Philly sax legend Odean Pope. Elliot has performed with Cecil Taylor Ensemble, Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes, New Ghost, Interplay, Talking Free Be-Bop, Odean’s Saxophone Choir,Don Preston’s Akashic Ensemble, Calvin Weston’s Big Tree and many many other groups. He has collaborated with poets John Sinclair and David Amram. His mileu is the integral interplay of language and music, and the music of language. It comes as no surprise that he has been inspired by innovators like Frank Zappa, Captain Beefheart and Sun Ra. D.MHotep has spent over 30 years growing as a sound artist in Philadelphia’s fertile ground of world-renowned players. In the early 1990’s he co-founded the ensemble JazGuardian with drummer Kimpedro. Since 2000, he has been mentored within the school of master musicians of the Sun Ra Arkestra–Marshall Allen, Charles Davis, Knoel Scott, Michael Ray, Tyrone Hill and others, and toured as a member of the Arkestra. Reverend Chris @ Diego’s Cantina & Tequila Bar (9:30–12:45) When Hurricane Katrina destroyed his home, Christopher Marsceill, pianist and vocalist, brought the funky Jazz piano sound of the Big Easy to Philly. In Nawlins, he studied with Ellis Marsalis and toured with George Porter, Jr., Russell Baptiste, and Charles & Ivan Neville. The Rev played the Jazz & Heritage Festival and was house pianist at Fairmount Hotel’s Sazerac Lounge. In 2012 he formed the High Rollers to perform Prohibition Era Swing & Blues. Ken, a PA Council of the Arts winner and Pew Finalist, is a musical chameleon, having played continuously in many area ensembles like Relache, Overboard, Minas and Synthesis, over the past four decades. He has toured extensively, played on nearly 200 recordings, and collaborated with numerous dancers, film-makers, poets and storytellers. Ken has been inspired by the wealth of musical traditions from around the world – including Klezmer and the Eastern European Jewish sounds. His debut solo piano album Afflictions and Remedies was praised as a “painting of a piano at work” by Meredith Hairston, who put it into rotation at WJSU in Jackson, MS. In 2016, Joe released 1.5, a nine track CD of Jazz and Classical inspired arrangements, alternative rock and Top 40 Hits. Songwriters Project Award for her tune “Cryin”. She followed that up with CD’s Drivin’ Myself Wild for You, Back in the USA, and Love Can Be So Nice, showcasing standards in English and French. For the past four summers, she has toured a dozen countries and headlined at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
