D. Language Requirements: The student must pass a reading Examination in two foreign languages – French, German and/or other language/s approved by his dissertation committee NOTE: 1. At least five courses must be on the 300-level. 2. Except for the core courses, the student is relatively free to distribute the other 27 units as he wishes.

The student will be examined in (a) the literature of his area and (b) the historical (including social and political) and philosophical (including religious) contexts of this literature.
