BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Business What is a BTEC Extended Diploma in Business?

A BTEC Extended Diploma is a two year full time vocational course, where you learn by completing assignments that are based on realistic situations, activities and demands. As well as learning about the employment area, you develop the skills you need to start a career. This qualification is equivalent to three A levels.

Why study a BTEC Extended Diploma in Business?

The BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Business is aimed at people who are interested in pursuing a managerial role within a business. Students embark on the course for a variety of reasons. Some may wish to continue their studies into further education whilst others may seek employment within a range of businesses both locally and nationally.

What makes a successful BTEC Extended Diploma in Business student?

A student who is organised and able to meet deadlines. A Business and Enterprise enthusiast who is keen to focus their studies on the development of both business theory and practical skills.

To study this course, what qualifications will I need and in which subjects? You will need to have at least four GCSEs at Grade C or above.

What is the structure of the course?

The course is made up of eighteen units, each consisting of approximately five assignments. Assignments can be in different formats such as written reports, PowerPoint presentations, discussions, role plays, posters, as well as practical activities such as web design or the creation of a real marketing campaign. Students will be awarded a Pass, Merit, Distinction or Distinction* by the points gained for the successful achievement of individual units. These are then calculated into UCAS points as detailed in the information booklet.

What opportunities are there for me to study beyond the classroom?

Students are also entitled to a one day per week work placement which will allow them to see first hand their business theory in practice. Many of the units allow for business visits, external visitors to the school and students may be able to use their part time employment experiences as evidence to meet related criteria.

What kind of career does this subject/qualification prepare me for?

BTEC National Diplomas are valued by employers and higher education institutions (universities and colleges). The Scheme could lead onto an Apprenticeship, or employment with institutions such as Banks, Insurance Brokers, Retailers, Manufacturers, Marketing Agencies, Leisure and Accommodation providers, and Accountancy firms. The benefit of this qualification is that the skills gained are relevant to all employment sectors.
