CLASS R Ultra Shallow Recessed
LOW p r o f i l e
Low profile. Low energy. High impact. The Class R by Corelite is recessed, redefined. In an architectural age where plenum heights are shrinking, energy costs are rising, and innovation in recessed lighting has essentially flat-lined, how do you answer to a specification driven by modern demands? You redefine the concept of recessed lighting, that’s how. And that’s exactly what Corelite’s Class R series of shallow recessed luminaires is doing. Discarding the traditional “box” design, the Class R boasts an innovative and unobtrusive lowprofile housing shape, providing the perfect answer to constrained plenum space. The Class R features T5 specific low-energy technology and highly efficient optical engineering to aid in “green” sustainable design. The ability to retain ceiling heights, reduce plenum space, and potentially save stories worth of building materials is perhaps the Class R’s highest impact on architecture overall. And with the sleek modern design of the Class R, compromising spaces will no longer have to suffer from compromised fixture performance or aesthetics. It’s linear thinking outside the recessed box. It’s the Class R by Corelite.
Meet the dynamic duo. It’s time to approach shallow plenums with confidence. Known for the ability to provide a unified aesthetic across multiple products and applications, Corelite offers not one, but two ultra shallow housing profiles, enabling a cohesive design layout no matter what obstructions lurk in the plenum space above. Both measuring under 3 inches in depth, the high-performing/low-profile Class R2 and its surprisingly slim Class R1 companion redefine recessed installation limitations in both new build and retrofit applications, without redefining your performance expectations.

Green isn’t just the color of our logo. Class R maximizes savings with energy saving technology. We all know green isn’t an easy thing to be. This lamp thermometer acts as an energy gauge, and illustrates how simply choosing a low energy light source may not completely satisfy your efficiency and savings goals. However, it is the first step. Most of the energy initiative programs target 1.0 watt per square foot, and with the creative employment of both the Class R and the lighting controls best suited to the application, that target can be easily realized, if not exceeded.

Saving the planet (and your budget) three inches at a time. Never has lighting had such impact on overall architectural design. It’s true. By simply shaving 3 inches from each floor’s plenum space, you can save 2 floors worth of construction materials on an 84-floor building. That’s 2 floors worth of glass, steel, and concrete, and more importantly, time, energy, and money. The ultra shallow profile of the Class R installs easily into a condensed plenum, and enables a reduced overall building height, without sacrificing your desired ceiling height (or a rainforest). Save three inches, save the world.

Focusing brilliance can be difficult. Two prism structures give direction to design.
Optical Specifications Key
The co-extruded lens, integral to all four of the Class R shielding options, is comprised of either clear or frosted acrylic, and incorporates two innovative prism structures. The center prism structure creates even light distribution across the lens surface. The return prism structure focuses light onto the side reflectors to create soft vertical illumination, helping to eliminate the “cave effect” and enhancing the perception of space.

A truly unique aesthetic, combining 1/2” spaced blades with the high performance of the clearcentered lens, places the Micro Baffle option in a class above the rest.
Lens (L) Offering the highest efficiency of the four options, the Lens provides a sleek, modern aesthetic and superior performance for any application.
The Class R Effect 1 2
Class R optics are divided into two components. 1. The direct component is designed to deliver ambience to horizontal task surfaces, and 2. The indirect distribution produces a small amount of diffuse light to vertical surfaces. The end result is a low-energy functional space with great vertical visibility.
Perf (R, P) Both the Rectangular and Round Perf options impart a soft glow while providing an awareness of the light source, and feature clean lines that mirror a variety of Corelite’s linear fixtures.

Blend in and stand out. Class R has seamless ceiling integration covered.
Taking on obstructions from every angle.
Whatever your ceiling grid style, the Class R has been uniquely engineered for precise integration with 4 standard “T” interfaces. This clean and flush finish to typical architectural ceilings and the attention to detail sets the Class R miles apart from competition.
Lift and shift installation in less space. Whether installing from below the plenum, or sliding over from an adjacent grid space, the Class R’s innovative “out-of-the-box” chamfered design allows for ease of installation in the tightest of spaces, and may be installed in half the space required for traditional lay-ins.

Efficient workspaces require efficient lighting solutions
You shouldn’t have to sacrifice the continuity of your design, nor the lighting and energy efficiency of your open workspaces, just because of differing ceiling heights and plenum contents. That’s why the dynamic duo of the Class R1 and Class R2 is the ideal solution. Because of their varying depths and identical shielding options, both the R1 and R2 can be used in one application, regardless of obstructions above the ceiling, while maintaining a unified aesthetic.
In addition, the R1 and R2 are both energy controls compatible, so you won’t forfeit your energy savings either. For example, daylight sensors positioned on the office perimeter are designed to dim the lighting during the day as natural light levels rise. Daylight harvesting in this manner, when used properly, can generate energy savings of up to 30% over typical savings with the Class R alone.

Low profile lighting for high profile occupants
The key ingredients of efficient private office lighting are visual comfort, proper task illuminance, and low energy usage. With all of these capabilities in addition to its balanced bilateral light distribution, the Class R, outfitted with the Micro Baffle shielding option, is perfectly suited to private office applications. This bilateral distribution aids in eliminating the “cave effect” by providing soft, even illumination on vertical surfaces.
Appropriate specification and installation of the Class R in this application includes the integration of an advanced energy controls system and an installed orientation of the luminaire’s low-brightness axis towards the door. The use of dimming, occupancy sensors, and daylight harvesting helps take the already low unit power density down to near-zero power consumption through the course of the day, and will also assist in meeting the energy codes specific to the region.

Preserve your plenum, and your environment
Nowhere will you find an architectural environment more jam-packed with challenging plenum obstructions than in the healthcare industry. Between the necessary HVAC components and the complex wiring systems of multiple medical devices, there is often little room left for lighting above the grid, much less installation of that lighting. However, lighting is instrumental to a successful healthcare application.
The best healthcare lighting closely considers the needs of both the professional and the patient, offering both vertical illumination that caters to functional task lighting, as well as balanced bilateral illumination for visual comfort and wayfinding. The Class R addresses both of these necessities, and still manages to install in the most crowded of plenum spaces. Additionally, the Class R is available with an advanced anti-microbial paint finish that prevents the growth of microorganisms, helping to maintain the germ-free environment critical to healthcare. Other enemies of the sterile environment, such as dust and bugs, are kept at bay by a lens gasketing option that both prevents ingress and offers a smooth exterior surface for easy cleaning.

Recessed lighting that really makes the grade
Creating an inviting and efficient atmosphere conducive to learning is of the utmost concern when lighting for classrooms, and the needs of the instructor and the student must both be considered. For the instructor, whiteboard visibility and the ability to adjust lighting for multimedia presentations is critical. Students require efficient and controlled task lighting for note taking and unimpeded computer screen visibility. The Class R, with its highly efficient bilateral light distribution, addresses all of these requirements.
With regard to energy concerns and constrained budgets, the Class R’s T5 specific low energy design generates lower watts per square foot, satisfying both stringent classroom lighting code requirements and the desire for a reduced energy bill. When combined with step dimming (0/50 or 100) and zone switching, the energy savings can increase further, while further providing the perfect solution for multimedia and multitask environments.
