The DSA-Sec Exercise was introduced by the Ministry of Education to promote holistic education and it allows students to gain early admission to a secondary school based on their achievements and talents before the release of PSLE results.

Primary school students are seldom exposed to the development of necessary life skills beyond the academic field, one of them being communications skill. Many outstanding students with incredible academic and CCA achievements have failed in their DSA applications and this largely lies in their inability to promote themselves effectively during the interview stage. Through our wealth of experience, we realised the inability to articulate thoughts effectively boils down to a few reasons: 1.Inadequate preparation for common questions and answers 2.Inability to handle unexpected questions 3.Lack of understanding of individual self 4.Most importantly, incompetent fluency of one’s opinions

At Adam Khoo Learning Centre, we have analysed past year common questions and devised an original approach S-I-P-P-A to solve such questions, classified into 5 different categories:
School Life Interests/Hobbies Personality Personal Details Aspirations Through such categorisation, students will be able to undertake more focused preparation and thereafter be able to draw up more conspicuous links to other similar issues.

Now that my child has recognised the different categories, how is he going to answer these questions? We believe in tackling these questions by an innovative and thought-inducing approach:
Answering questions by asking more relevant questions. There is a widespread problem of our young students being incompetent in answering interview questions adequately and rationally. Faced with a question they are unprepared for, they often stumble and answer in a very vague or superficial manner.
By encouraging students to think of more relevant questions on the spot, they will be able to gain insights into linking the 5 above categories together and develop answers coherently.

Personality We like to think that everyone’s personality and character as unique and interesting. Everyone has different strengths and weaknesses and hence varying ways to cope with such challenges. Give some further thought into your specialties and obstacles conquered. Example: What do you think makes you stand out among the rest? Our approach: Here, your personality & strengths will play a huge role in shaping your answer. Of course, everyone will share their unique character and special strengths will be shared. We encourage students to ask themselves more relevant questions, such as going a step further to discuss how they constantly improve themselves to overcome their weaknesses and give examples of such instances. Here, we have a more substantial response by demonstrating ability to handle challenges in addition to our various talents.
