Water Fitness Class Descriptions Water Fitness Program and Class Design: The YMCA of the Foothills offers a variety of water fitness classes to meet the needs of our community; from those returning from rehab to active members to those who want to increase their athletic ability. Our program incorporates Human Movement through Space, Sports Medicine, Psychology, and Y Core Values. Workout routines are progressively challenging and incorporate varying teaching styles in order to bring about maximum participation and inclusion. Emphasis is on improving each participant’s cardiovascular and pulmonary systems by training for balance, coordination, agility, flexibility, strength, cardio, and core. Our Water Fitness Instructors may vary routines based on progression, focus, and ability. Members are encouraged to share their goals and accomplishments with their instructor and classmates. Please consult your doctor to see if you are ready for increased physical activity. Inform your Water Fitness Instructors of any limitations or medical concerns. Philip Castillo, Water Fitness Coordinator/Instructor Classes are divided into Water, Aqua, and Hydro Fitness, with each stage becoming increasingly more challenging. Classes marked with an asterisk (*) denotes that session may include cardio or strength training on land.
Step 1: Physically Active (Water) Special Population(s): Members returning from inactivity, managing arthritis, with limited range of motion, and/or released from rehabilitation Strength for Balance Designed for those who want to regain their mobility and strength for balance. Baby steps to a more physically independent, active, and healthy lifestyle. Learn the benefits of stretching and resistance training in water. Open to all levels who want to increase power output with the assistance of hydro static pressure and specific moves and equipment. Pace: Slow to Vigorous Intensity: Light to Vigorous
Aqua Aerobics Get ready for a full body workout through rhythmic exercises in shallow, intermediate, and/or deep water. Pace: Moderate to High Intensity: Moderate to High

Aqua Zumba/Toning NEW Zumba moves create a challenging water workout through cardio -conditioning and resistance training. Move to latin music and learn choreographic pieces. Pace: High Intensity: High
Water Fitness 3.0/Silver Splash Focuses in on strengthening by using special water exercise equipment conducted in shallow water. Pace: Moderate Intensity: Moderate Water Stretch Simultaneously strengthening and stretching elongated muscles. Exercises are performed in shallow and emphasizes deep breathing. Pace: Slow to Moderate Intensity: Low to Moderate Water Yoga Back to basics with fluid Yoga flowing and static poses while breathing deeply. Pace: Slow Intensity: Light to Moderate Aqua Fit (*) (Water and Hyrdo versions offered) Follow the instructor through a leisurely exercise program and conversation on health and well being. Work on adhering to your fitness goals while making friends. Pace: Slow to Moderate Intensity: Light to Moderate
Special Population: Members who have been active for more than a year Advanced Aqua Fit Workout designed to strengthen, firm and sculpt muscles by using resistance. Pace: Moderate to High Intensity: Moderate to High
Step 3: Athletic (Hydro) Population(s): Members who compete in athletic events or who are current or former Athletes Finning Total body workout great for abdominals, endurance and muscle conditioning. Excellent conditional training for returning or current lap swimmers. Pace: High Intensity: High to Vigorous Hydro Boot Camp This shallow, intermediate, and/or deep water workout was designed to increase your athletic abilities. Increases muscle strength, endurance, balance, and coordination. Pace: High Intensity: High to Vigorous Y Hydro Conditioning (*) NEW! Train like a athlete is our unique intense water workout. Team oriented activity which focuses on increasing your athletic ability and improve your hand-eye coordination. Water Fitness, water polo, and swimming are incorporated.
