Volunteers Story

One of our lovely clients has passed away. Fredrick Sherratt 1926—2017

RACHEL HARRISON Hi my name is Rachel, I moved to Long Eaton in September 2016 and I did not know anybody. I had made a big change in my life and I wanted to get to know my community and new people so I joined Erewash Voluntary Action in January 2017. I did a course on befriending to begin with and I have gone on to do a number of courses with the centre including the Adult Volunteer Passport Training and Mental Health Awareness. I am now a registered befriender/shopper with the Centre and I really enjoy what I do. The first time I stepped foot in the centre I must admit I was a little apprehensive as to what I had to offer, however the staff were all helpful, supportive and friendly. Erewash Voluntary Action have given me so much confidence in myself and the belief that, even with life changes, there are always opportunities out there. I never stop learning and EVA has helped me to go on and find part time employment with MENCAP. I can honestly say that without the help and support from the staff I would not have had the confidence to apply for the job, let alone go along for an interview. Joining the EVA has genuinely been one of the best decisions I have ever made and I would recommend that anyone who is thinking about it, just go along and see what its all about.

He was a shopping client and loved to come to our Teadance. He once told us he lived his life by a poem he found when he was younger. Poem IF If you think you are beaten, you are If you think you dare not, you don’t If you’d like to win, but think you can’t It’s almost certain you won’t. If you think you’ll lose, you’ve lost For out of the world we find Success begins with a fellow’s will It’s all in the state of mind. If you think you’re outclassed, you are You’ve got to think high to rise. You’ve got to be sure of yourself before You can ever win a prize. Life’s battles don’t always go To the stronger of faster man But sooner of later the man who wins Is the one who thinks he can. Donations to Erewash Voluntary Action were warmly received from Fredrick’s funeral.

QUOTES FROM OUR CLIENTS Transport Client Mental Heath Client “A great difference as previously (to access Parkinsons Group) we had to catch a total of four buses to reach Risley with 1 wheelchair.”

Shopping Project Client “I suffer with my back if I didn’t have a shopper I don’t know what I would do”

EREWASH MENTAL HEALTH PARTNERSHIP We reported in the last edition of our newsletter the good news that the project has been successfully re-commissioned by the Erewash Clinical Commissioning Group. Funding has been secured until May 2019 and we will build on the strengths from the first two years. As part of the re-commissioned work we have agreed on a new name moving away from mental health innovation project to the Erewash Mental Health Partnership. Key aspects of the work will continue including Mental Health First Aid England training for individuals in community groups, mental health awareness training for volunteers, signposting and sharing of information about local groups and activities to help spread the knowledge of what is available locally in Erewash. Development of peer mental health volunteers is an important part of the work. Volunteers can either befriend clients visiting on a regular basis, or accompany a service receiver on a short-term basis to help them integrate into a local community or voluntary group. Anybody interested in becoming a mental health peer volunteer contact Catriona at Erewash Voluntary Action Tel 0115 9466740 [email protected]

COMMUNITY CONNECTORS Community Connectors help friends, family, colleagues and neighbours find support in their own communities. They help people get health support and information on local groups and services. Anyone who is interested in finding out about what is available in their community and would like to pass this information on can be a Community Connector. Community Connectors may be members of the community who are already supporting others and linking them to resources of some kind. Some Connectors might already be actively involved in community groups, forums or activities, and the project is looking to further strengthen its connections by working with groups, forums or organisations with which we don’t already have a link. The Project adopts a community and person - centred approach to improving health and wellbeing in Erewash. It is designed to be led by members of Erewash communities, gathering the views of residents and members of the public. It seeks to establish what is important to them and what is needed in their community, to identify any changes they would like to see and what is needed to make those changes. The Project has got off to a great start in the first few months, with 8 people registered to be Connectors across local communities in Erewash. I have spent much of the first month getting to know what organisations, services and groups there are operating in Erewash. So far, I have met with 47 local organisations and groups to promote the Community Connectors project and increase my knowledge of what services are available in the local area. I have been working on promotional literature for the project i.e. leaflets, posters, flyers and information sheets, paying particular attention to the wording and language used to promote Community Connectors. Community Connectors is part of the Wellbeing Erewash’s Community Resilience Workstream and I have spent some time getting up to speed with their work, and the profiel of the other projects working to improve resilience of Erewash residence and local communities. I have been looking at the work of other NHS Vanguard projects across the country who are working to the ‘Health as a Social Movement’ model, alongside Wellbeing Erewash. In June we began promoting the project across the borough; displaying leaflets, flyers and posters in the local community and to local businesses and talks and presentations at various meetings. Further dates are planned throughout August for promoting the project, particularly focusing on local church groups and GP practices. Some connectors have said they would be happy to come along to help promote the project and talk to others who are interested in the role. One connector has been enormously helpful in promoting the connector’s role in key and prominent places across Ilkeston. I have been developing the training materials for Community Connectors, and the first induction session will take place on 8th September for the first cohort of Connectors. There is also an individual workbook to run alongside the introduction session for those connectors who are unable to attend the induction briefings. A Community Connectors Facebook page and Twitter account have been set up to help promote activities and share information. Please follow us on Facebook -– Erewash Community Connectors and Twitter – @EVAConnectors to help us spread information wider. Information about the project has been emailed to all local media contacts and articles will be included in the next issues of the Long Eaton Extra magazine and EBC Today. A piece about the project has been included in Update, the Wellbeing erewash newsletter, and the NHS, New Care Models Bulletin. Finally, we will be holding an Information Drop In, alongside the Erewash Mental Health Partnership, in Ilkeston on the 17th October 11am - 2pm, and have an information stand at the Erewash Voluntary Action Open Day 3pm - 6pm on 21st September. There are lots of exciting events and activities being planned and there will be more details of those in the next newsletter.

Men’s Sheds A Men’s Shed is a larger version of the typical man’s shed in the garden – a place where he feels at home and pursues practical interests with a high degree of autonomy. A Men’s Shed offers this to a group of such men where members share the tools and resources they need to work on projects of their own choosing at their own pace and in a safe, friendly and inclusive venue. They are places of skill-sharing and informal learning, of individual pursuits and community projects, of purpose, achievement and social interaction. A place of leisure where men come together to work.
