CONTENT:  

You will receive a 1 : 10 000 orthophoto and a 1 : 50 000 topographical map. The structure is as follows : 1. Basic map skills – study bearing, direction, distance, profiles, gradient, intervisibility, co-ordinates, block grid references etc. NB: All general geographic skills. Also, you must be able to locate features from a map/photo and draw them onto a sketch map. All calculations included. 2. Theory component involves : micro-climate, geomorphology, economic activities(primary secondary and tertiary), rural and urban settlement and environmental despoliation. 3. Vertical and oblique photos. 4. Map Projections and Geographic Information Systems.

Question Paper Structure: Question 1 Multiple choice questions (15 marks) Question 2 Map calculations (20 marks) Question 3 Analysis and interpretation of a topographic map and a photograph, and application of theory (25 marks) Question 4 GIS (15 marks)

NB : This paper is mainly skills based and will require application of formula as well as interpretative skills. You will require a calculator and a protractor as additional stationery in order to complete this examination.
