“Sabbath Observance” Lesson: Exodus 31:12-18 GOLDEN TEXT: “Verily my Sabbaths ye shall keep: for it is a sign between Me and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am the Lord that doth sanctify you”(Exodus 31:13).

TODAY’S AIM: “To understand the regulations of the Sabbath commandment for Israel.” INTRODUCING THE LESSON: Most of us live in a culture that is poles apart from what we see in the Old Testament regarding Sabbath observance. Whereas the Israelites often tended to take God’s already stringent Sabbath commands to legalistic extremes, today’s society has abandoned any concern whatsoever for a day set aside to honor God. Decades ago, the Lord’s Day was part of the regular routine, even if it was largely an outward observance. Today Sunday is treated like any other day of the week. Anything goes. This gives Christians an opportunity to stand out from the crowd by making the Lord’s Day one that we genuinely honor in our hearts and our actions. PRACTICAL POINTS: 1. God makes His expectations clear to all men (Exodus 31:12). 2. As God’s people, we live set apart for His purposes (Exodus 31:13-14). 3. Through the principles of the Sabbath, God teaches believers to depend on Him (Exodus 31:15). 4. Believers must teach the next generation to know, worship, and obey God (Exodus 31:16). 5. God’s people are renewed through worship and strengthened as they remember who He is and what He has done (Exodus 31:17). 6. Man’s standards can change from day to day, but God’s will always endures (Exodus 31:18). CONCLUDING THE LESSON: While New Testament believers are not bound by the Mosaic regulations of the Sabbath Day, we still believe we should follow the principle of that command and set aside Sunday for the Lord. There are some ways that we should honor the Lord on Sunday. We should honor Him by attending church services, spending and extra time in prayer, witnessing to or ministering to people, and resting. We have no specific regulations of what we should and should not do on Sunday, but if we understand that the day is to be set aside as special to the Lord, we will not carry on the regular routines of the other six days of the week. It is the Lord’s Day, not our day. We should give Him the priority. If it is our heart's response to God and not merely a legalistic duty, respecting Sunday can be a sign that sets us apart as belonging to the Lord.
