Strategic Imperative

DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION OF INDUSTRIES: BUSINESS AND SOCIAL IMPACT An Interactive Think Tank on How Digitization is Disrupting Industries Pillar I: Connected Supply Chain and Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) offers unmatched oppor tunities, its impact on existing industries, business models, value chains and actions required now, are key decisions business leaders need to take now to ensure long-term success. The key to this transformation lies in developing, implementing and integrating technologies and capabilities in such a way that it significantly improves operational efficiencies. In a connected supply chain, the combination of Internet of Things (IoT) data with analytics provides manufacturers with a common platform on which to operate with real-time visibility, promoting greater interdependency, collaboration, dynamic responsiveness and the flexibility to integrate disruptive innovations. This is expected to derive significant savings. It is where the intersection of people, data and intelligent machines will have far-reaching impacts on the productivity, efficiency and operations of industries around the world.

Pillar II: Digital Channels to Market and B2B e-Commerce The business and marketing landscape has drastically changed in recent years with B2B marketplace model bringing in fierce competition. The digital marketplace is constantly evolving, concurrently, B2B marketplace models are also developing; the main driver for migration to B2B is basically the pressure from industry leaders to move to online platforms. A transition to seller-driven platforms is a reality, and online relationships become less about procurement and more about selling. As marketplaces and cross-industry public platforms such as Alibaba and Amazon became popular, B2B online relationships are moving from a one-to-many to many-to-many business model. Instead of a model where one company invests and builds an e-platform for its suppliers, the preference is for a solution in which anybody integrates an e-procurement process and facilitates the purchase of goods online. The new B2B marketplace approach is helping both the seller and buyer enter the eCommerce space.

Pillar III: Connected, Autonomous Products and Services Connected, autonomous products have caused significant value chain disruptions and are transforming industries, customer relationships and the nature of competition. We live

in a smart, connected world that enables a virtuous cycle of innovation. Smar t, connected products have three core elements: physical components, “smar t” components, and connectivity components. The rapid pace of digitization is transforming the component-driven automotive sector to a software- and solutions-focused industry, accelerated by consumers’ evolving digital lifestyle expectations and demands for new and innovative services. The automotive industry has also focused on connectivity and digitization, with self-driving vehicles causing disruption in traditional auto industry business models. The connected car market has moved beyond a simple ecosystem of the traditional automotive suppliers. Alternately, the Apple’s and Google’s of the world clearly regard the connected car market as the next biggest opportunity outside of their existing smartphone and tablet worlds. Robotics, artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things have all become part of a new industrial revolution.

Pillar IV: New Business Models of Product as a Service and IoT Platforms That IoT is the most revolutionary disruption is passé. What is the next step toward operational agility? IoT provides unprecedented opportunities for never before seen, business models. The implications for business model innovation are enormous. To take advantage of new, cloud-based oppor tunities, it is imperative for enterprises to reinvent themselves, through enhanced strategic and tactical decision making and increase their competitive advantage. “Product-as-a-service” offerings had gained prominence and have led to better customer engagement and new revenue streams. There are many industry groups exploring how to work collectively to adopt technologies like Internet of Things (IOT), and this will naturally flow into the development of product-as-a-service offerings.

Pillar V: Social Impact—How Digital Transformation is Changing Societies, Businesses, and Individuals Digital transformation is deeply impacting our businesses and our society. Digitization of data helps make things more efficient and fast by saving on paperwork, manpower and time. Multiple things are now in reach at the click of a button. While digitization is creating great value for society; collaboration between businesses, regulators and policymakers to maximize value for business and wider society will be imperative. While digital initiatives add value for society, wider implications, including sustainable and measurable solutions is a need of the hour.

Global markets are being disrupted by an accelerating pace of innovation in the digital world. Digital transformation has entered an era of unprecedented change for enterprises and real change necessitates a fundamental shift across processes, functions, customer engagement and many other aspects of business. Today, more than ever before, it has become imperative for organizations to implement concrete strategies around digital transformation. The future of customer engagement requires greater focus on meeting future customer needs. Growing expectations from empowered customers requires enterprises to align their core business strategies with their digital business strategies. The Growth Innovation and Leadership (GIL) Summit, provides the context needed to seize potential opportunities for growth through visionary perspectives on the digital transformation maturity model and well-defined roadmap will help to effectively benchmark and reinforce strategies enterprises can use to reach new levels of success.
