Biographical Sketch Born January 30, 1923, to Daniel and Mayme Shroeder King in West Point, Iowa, Dr. Imogene M. King received her nursing diploma from St. John’s Hospital School of Nursing in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1945. She received a bachelor’s degree from the St. Louis University School of Nursing in 1948, and a master’s degree in 1957. In 1961, she earned a doctor of education degree from Columbia University Teachers College and began at Loyola University School of Nursing as an assistant professor. In 1968 she became director of the Ohio State University School of Nursing before returning to Loyola in 1972 as a full professor in the graduate nursing program. From 1980-1990 Dr. King was a professor at University of South Florida College of Nursing. In her career of more than fifty years, she distinguished herself as an outstanding educator and a leading theoretician in the field of nursing. Her works on the theory of nursing have been translated into several languages, including Spanish and Japanese. She took time to work extensively with Japanese nursing students interested in her theories. Imogene King passed away on December 24, 2007, in South Pasadena, Florida, at the age of 84. Scope and Content The Imogene M. King papers consist of 16.4 linear feet spanning the years 1960 to 2002 and include speeches, correspondence, awards, photographs, convention materials, publications, and audio cassette tapes. The majority of the collection is arranged alphabetically. Evaluations and recommendations are restricted. They have been listed in their proper order but have been removed from the boxes. King
