PEDIATRIC UNIT DEDICATION NELSON S. CARSWELL JR., M.D. PEDIATRIC UNIT On January 22, 2015, members of the community gathered with family, friends, and colleagues of Dr. Nelson Carswell, Jr. on the 5th floor of our hospital to honor the “Doc”. Dr. Nelson Carswell was educated at Emory University in Atlanta and the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. He served in the United States Air Force from 1957-1959 stationed in Roswell, NM, where he served as a pediatrician for the 4036 US Hospital. After the Air Force, he completed his pediatric residency at MCG and then returned to Dublin where he opened his private practice, Children’s Clinic, in 1961. He was one of only seven physicians in Dublin at that time and was the sole pediatrician in the Middle Georgia area for many years. Known as “Dublin’s baby doctor” he would often fly in his private plane to surrounding hospitals to provide pediatric consults. He served many years as Chief of Pediatrics for Laurens Memorial Hospital and was on the Board of Directors when it was sold to HCA and became Fairview Park Hospital in 1980. Affectionately called “Doc” by his friends and “Golf Daddy” by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, his love of children is what keeps him practicing. He married BettyAnn Drew of Dublin and they have five children: Nelson, Chris, Karen, Ken, and Edyie.

... from Don’s desk Thanks for a GREAT Year! It’s January so that gives us the chance to look at the year we just completed while looking to what lies ahead in 2015. 2014 was a banner year in many ways – and I am sure many of you would say it was a BUSY year in every way! Well, I would agree! Our Fairview team again demonstrated its excellence and commitment to improving the patient experience. We remain one of the top hospitals in HCA in both patient and employee satisfaction. Personally, I focus a great deal on ensuring that we listen to our employees and keep you engaged, because I am convinced that the key to great patient scores is a highly engaged work force. In 2014 we had more surveys and inspections than any single year in my career. It seems as if we had someone in the hospital evaluating our performance every month. The results were nothing less than spectacular! We were again named as one of TJC’s top performing hospitals, we received an “A” rating from the Leapfrog Group for excellence in patient safety, the GHA again recognized us as one of the top hospitals in Georgia for outcomes and core measure performance, and we were accredited or reaccredited in a number of programs including both our Knee and Hip Replacement Programs, our Chest Pain Center, Stroke Program, Sepsis Program and our Sleep Center. In 2014 we also went live with CPOE, dramatically enhancing documentation and patient safety. This 6-month long project was a sterling example of our team of clinical experts, IT experts and physicians working together effectively for a very successful implementation. Our folks also implemented a Patient Portal allowing our patients immediate on-line access to their medical records. Of course we accomplished all of these milestones while adding various pieces of new equipment throughout the building and during construction/renovation projects in HIM, Ultrasound, the ER, and several clinical areas while seeing growth in surgery and ER visits. New physicians joined us in several areas, especially with our hospital-based specialties. So, for an amazing 2014, I thank each of you because each of you played an important part in our success. As I look ahead to 2015, I believe it will be our best year ever. I anticipate adding and expanding services, continuing our progress on building improvements, as well as addressing employee needs - all with the intent of continuing to improve the patient’s experience. I am proud to work alongside of each of you as we bring to life to our motto, “Neighbors Caring for Neighbors!” May God bless you and your families in 2015!

FROM THE DESK OF THE INFECTION CONTROL COORDINATOR... Reminders: 

It is time to complete Annual N95 Mask Fit Testing. This is only for staff that go into the negative pressure room (Nursing, Radiology, Lab, PLOPS, EVS, PT, Case Management, etc). If you’re not sure if this applies to you, call Brandi Jones, ext. 3580! Fit Testing forms are the same as last year, and can be printed from the hospital intranet - go to the left side of the page and click on Infection Control, then click on Employee Health Forms, then click on TB Respirator Mask Fit Test Form. Print this form out. I will come around to the departments, and you may also come by Brandi’s office, Room 526, to complete this. N95 Mask Fit Testing is due by March 31st.



In case you haven’t noticed, flu is here! The CDC is predicting a severe flu season, largely due to a variant H3N2 strain. This means that one of the flu strains in our 4-strain vaccine has decreased ability to protect us. But all is not lost! “...the vaccine’s ability to protect against those viruses may be reduced, although vaccinated people may have a mild er illness if they do become infected. While the vaccine’s ability to protect against drifted H3N2 viruses this season may be reduced, we are still strongly recommending vaccination,” said Joseph Bresee, M.D., Chief of the Influenza Epidemiology and Prevention Branch at CDC. “Vaccination has been found to provide some protection against drifted viruses in past seasons. Also, Vaccination will offer protection against other flu viruses that may become more com mon later in the season.” Remember that patients with positive flu screens go into Droplet Isolation - paper mask for staff when providing patient care, and a paper mask for patient when required to leave the room for procedures/tests. Staff with positive flu screens must stay home from work until they are fever-free for 24 hours. Our healthcare provider vaccination rate is at 92%. Those declining vaccination OR not providing documentation of vaccination are required to wear a paper mask when within 6 feet of patients. This goes through March 31st.

PROTECTING W-2S AND SENSITIVE TAX INFORMATION Workforce members put their own information at risk by:  Not logging off after accessing eSTUB from a shared computer, allowing the next person to see what’s on the screen. Workforce members can access eSTUB from their personal computers or mobile devices using this link: https:// www.onlinewagestatements.com/parallon and entering a username and password.  Not encrypting emails containing their W-2s sent from their work email to a personal external email (e.g., home, spouse, or accountant). -Workforce members are not required to encrypt their own personal information. However, we want workforce members to protect their own information when possible. -Workforce members who send unencrypted emails containing SSNs (including emails with W-2s attached) will show up on the “Proofpoint Unencrypted Email” report that the DISO/Zone FISO receives. The technology that scans for unencrypted SSNs in emails cannot determine if the SSN is for personal or business use. DISOs/Zone FISOs will follow up with the individuals on this report to provide further education and reminders.  Printing a W-2 and forgetting to pick it up off the printer, leaving it on a desk, or throwing it away in a regular trash can instead of a shred bin.  Downloading a W-2 to a shared drive or teamroom where others may have access. All of these methods could allow the workforce member’s information to end up in the wrong hands, leading to tax fraud or other financial identity theft. To make workforce members aware of how to protect their W-2 information, you are encouraged to use and/or customize the following content in a newsletter, email, or other communication, to remind workforce members about the importance of protecting their own SSNs and identities: 

Protect Your W-2 and Sensitive Information Once you access your W-2, you can do one of the following: email it, print it, or download it. Here are some simple actions to follow to protect your information: -Report Inappropriate Behavior -If you discover someone did not take one of the appropriate actions above, discuss it with the person involved, or report it to a supervisor. -Don’t Get Scammed -Remember that the IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information. This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. -For more information: -Read the top tips every taxpayer should know about identity theft, courtesy of the IRS. -Contact your ECO or FISO with any questions or concerns.
