The Pastor’s Letter February 2018
Dear North Lake, My wife Bobbi and I are “on call” for the arrival of our daughter’s first child in February. We are excited for Rachel and her husband Jeff. (Yes, she had the wisdom to marry a man with the same name as her father!) So far she’s had a smooth, healthy pregnancy. Her scheduled due date is the same date as our Annual Congregational Meeting. So, barring an emergency, I will be in town to preach on Sunday, February 4th, and to moderate our meeting on Tuesday, February 6th. Then we’ll head north to Winchester, VA, hoping to be there for the birth of our first grandson and to provide some support for a week or so afterward. I am grateful to Pastor Mike—who will handle the preaching responsibilities on February 11 and 18—and to Pastor Dan—who will deliver the message at the Ash Wednesday service on February 14. In March, Pastor Mike and I will trade roles, because he’s expecting another grandchild in Ohio. It’s been great fun to compare grandfather roles with him, especially since his doctoral studies at Dubuque Seminary focus on biblical grandparenting. He’s working to develop a series of workshops to help all grandparents be more intentional and effective as spiritual mentors for their grandchildren. You’ll hear more about his plans as we get further into the year. But this has been a wonderful, inspiring chapter of life for Pastor Mike and me to share. We know we have a calling to serve the Lord as pastors at North Lake. We appreciate and relish that calling. Meanwhile, we are growing into our calling as grandfathers. We share the grandparenting role with Pastor Lynn and Pastor Dan. And so many of you are veterans in the grandparenting department! I give thanks to God for my grandparents who blessed me in many ways as I was growing up. My maternal grandparents in particular shaped and encouraged my relationship with the Lord through their example of a sturdy, vibrant faith. Their legacy stays with me and still enriches the way I know and love and serve Jesus. Often after worship I hear someone explain that he or she is headed away from NLPC for a special event or visit with their children and grandchildren. Of course we miss you when you are out of town. But, I strongly endorse your decisions to be present with your grandchildren. Make the most of those opportunities, and do so as a disciple of Jesus, gently loving and blessing your grandchildren in the name of the Lord. Many of you have that calling too! You can bet that our bags will soon be packed and we’ll be ready to go when we get the call from VA!
Pastor Jeff

Letter from Associate Pastor Michael Smith
Hello Family, I ended my January newsletter with these words, “May God grant each of you enriched love for God, a deeper relationship with Jesus, and a faith filled journey with the Holy Spirit in 2018.” God gives us instructions on how to live a faith filled journey with the Holy Spirit in 2018, “And without faith it is impossible to please God, for whoever would approach him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.” (Hebrews 11:6, NRSV). We as God’s children have the first part of this scripture fulfilled because we believe in God and have accepted Jesus Christ as our personal Lord and Savior. To fulfill the second part of this scripture we must continue to seek God, knowing God desires to reward us with faith to accomplish God’s will through our lives. God has big plans for each of us to experience God’s presence daily and use each of us to help others know of God’s love and accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. One opportunity for you to spend more time with God and receive more faith is to attend the North Lake Spiritual Retreat, “An Invitation to Talk With God”, being held in Fruitland Park at the Life Enrichment Center, April 12-14th. The three workshops are; What is Prayer, Hearing God’s Voice, and Living Out God’s Answers. God desires to hear our prayers, answer our prayers, and see us walk out our lives in God’s faith. (Brochures for the retreat are available at the Discipleship Desk in the Church lobby.) I leave you with the precious word of Jesus, “Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30, NRSV) Jesus is Enough,
Pastor Mike

Church New s (Cont’d) NLPC - How To Communicate Your Event, Class, Activity or Fundraiser Prior to scheduling your event, class, activity or fundraiser, you must consult with the Staff Leadership Team. The Session has empowered the Staff Leadership Team to approve and schedule all events, classes, activities and fundraisers within the church. Once your event or class has been approved, you must schedule rooms with the Facility Manager prior to publicizing your event or class. The following are different ways to communicate your event, class, activity or fundraiser. For more information, contact Dennis Heasty or Janice Braden. Bulletin Bulletin Cover requests must be submitted to the Staff Leadership Team as far in advance as possible. Many times the bulletin covers are assigned several months in advance. The covers should be directed at communicating with the entire congregation. Newsletter The monthly newsletter is a great way to promote activities and events that have a longer timeline. It can also serve as a means of promoting the success of a previous event and a vehicle for thanking volunteers. Deadline for Newsletter submissions is the 1st Friday of the month prior to the month of publication. Weekly Church Wide Email Announcements for upcoming classes, activities, events and fundraisers published in the weekly bulletin will automatically be included in the weekly email that is sent out. However, in order to keep the email concise, the information will be limited to the name, date and time of the event, a short description and information on how to sign up. Church Website Announcements for upcoming classes, activities, events and fundraisers that are included in the weekly email will automatically be placed on the Home page of the church website. Requests to post additional information to the website should be directed to the Church Administrator. On Line Registrations If you have a class or an event that requires registration or ticket sales, please contact the Church Administrator who can setup the registration/ticket sale. Registrations can include a payment option. Sunday Morning Worship Announcements Worship announcements should promote a ministry event, activity or fundraiser that is of interest to significant portion of the congregation. Because of the time constraints of having three Sunday morning worship services we must limit the time allotted to announcements. . Requests for special announcements or videos must be submitted at least three weeks in advance to the Director of Worship and Music and approved by the Worship Planning Team. Posters, Banners, Flyers and tables in the lobby There is a Sign Up/Discipleship Desk available on Sunday morning to share information about your event or ministry. This desk must be scheduled with the Administrator and Facility Director. Space is limited, and is given on a first come first serve basis. The use of posters, banners and flyers in the lobby must also be approved in advance by the Staff Leadership Team. Newspaper Advertising Newspaper advertising is costly and should only be used for major events where you want to reach outside of the church membership. Requests for newspaper advertising or for inclusion in the weekly church ad should be forwarded to the Church Administrator at least three weeks in advance. March 3, 2016; Revised September 20, 2017

Discipleship Little Blessings - Linda Brow n, Director Happy February to all! Time to celebrate that God loves each of us every day. We will spend lots of time this month learning of God’s love and helping the kids to share His love for others. Even at their young ages, it is not too soon to find and share ways for them to be of service to others. We are always looking for ways that our students can connect to the church and others, so if you have any ideas, please contact me. Our VPK students have had their second round of testing done and I am still in the process of sharing the results with their parents. I sometimes have trouble making parents understand that even though they have their child enrolled in school, VPK, that the parents are the first and most important teachers. Our public school students recently got their second report card and I am proud of their progress. These children have a bright future ahead of each of them and I am blessed to be able to see and hopefully influence them.
Some families at Little Blessings are interested in collecting manufacturer’s coupon inserts, like the ones that come in the Sunday paper, so that they can purchase hygiene items to be distributed to those in need. They want to start by donating to the Christian Food Pantry and to Camp Sozo. If you are not a coupon clipper yourself, please keep the coupons and drop them off in my mailbox in the main church office when you come to church. I am trying to nurture and develop this desire to help others in our parents and I feel sure that others in our congregation might want to do the same. We hope to formally organize maybe a parent/church group of coupon clippers who are working together to provide the health and beauty aid items needed, but not funded through government funding. If you have any questions, please call (259-0700) or email me at
[email protected] Jesus loves you, all the time!
Kidz for Christ - Children’s Ministry at North Lake - Susan Burton, Director The new year is already in full swing and our Kidz calendar is filling up. On Wednesday, February 14, the children at Christ LOGOS will celebrate For Ash Wednesday and on Saturday, March 31, we will have our NLPC Annual Easter Egg Hunt. In Sunday School we are continuing the Gospel Project series and currently following the life of
Jesus through His parables. The LOGOS children are busy working on the Christian Musical "The Tale of Three Trees" which they will perform at FAB Tuesday on April 3rd. We are also beginning to plan for VBS this summer, so save the dates for the week of June 11 to 15. Watch for more information coming soon. All for Christ Kidz!

Discipleship (Cont’d) Youth & Young Adults - Brad Harter, Director 2018 has already started off with a blast for Youth Refuge! We served at the PW Retreat and the bonfire and family hang out at Chris and Van Kao’s was a blast! The Parents’ Bible Study has kicked off as well. Pastor Mike is teaching from a book by Glen Schultz, Kingdom Education. They are meeting on Wednesday nights from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m., the same time Youth Refuge meets. The cool thing about it is that the youth will keep our group discussions based on what the parents are learning in their class! February will be just as exciting! We will continue to walk through our new teaching series from the Gospel Project; walking through the Bible,
chronologically, highlighting God’s redemptive plan throughout. Fun Spot, Gator Land on President’s Day, and a Bowling Night at Fiesta Bowl will be our destinations this month. I encourage you all to stop and strike up a conversation when you come across any one of our students. We welcome your continued prayers for salvation, continual growth in their walk with Christ, and the unspoken needs of our students and families. Let us know if the Lord is calling you to be a Mentor, or if you have any Y4Hire needs. To God be the glory in all He has in store for Youth Refuge in the month of February.

Feed the School Children - Ginny Dever, Coordinator Following is a brief history of our Feed the School Children Program: It all began February 2011 when Dave Ruddell and his committee were made aware that there were many students at The Villages Elementary School of Lady Lake who didn’t have food for the weekend. Over the past seven years, the number of needy students has grown from 25-110. During the school year we have 2530 volunteers who meet the first Thursday of the month to pack weekend food bags for these children. We pack for the entire month (4 or 5 weeks) and the bags contain a variety of healthy foods such as: canned tuna, fruit, breakfast bars, peanut butter & jelly, etc. The food purchases are financed by generous donations from our fellow church members that is bought in bulk, to control the cost.
Each Friday, the Title 1 school liaison discreetly places the snack bags into the various children’s backpacks. The intent is that these children, from low income families, will have nutritional meals on the weekend. If you are looking for a local mission to help support, please consider making a donation payable to NLPC with the notation “Feed the School Children” on the memo line. Your assistance is appreciated! We are always looking for additional volunteers; so, if you would like to join our ‘assembly line’, put Thursday, February 1st at 9:00 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall on your calendar. It takes less than an hour of your time and we welcome return volunteers and newcomers. Any questions, please call Ginny Dever at 352-347-3556 or email her at:

Cuba Mission Trip - Beck y Bros, Mission Elder Please keep Cindy Hannum and Yolanda Raley Stanton in your prayers this month as they participate in the mission trip to Cuba. They will spend most of their time with Pastor Edelberto and our church in Caribarien. They will be taking your love with them; but, we will also be taking medicine, a new projector, children's books in Spanish, fabric, kitchen utensils, totes for the ladies to use on market day, arts and crafts for the children and whatever else they can find space for in their suitcases. "The Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore."

Letter for Robert Weingartner, Exec. Director of The Outreach Foundation Dear North Lake, I am pretty sure that the shout of joy that I heard coming from Central Florida was Berry Long when he learned of the funds that North Lake raised for mission in Tete Province through your Christmas Eve and Advent season offerings. Or maybe the joy resounded all the way from Mozambique! We are lifting our own voices in thanks to God. Please know that I am deeply thankful to you for your leadership and commitment to this important work led by Nedson and Sebber. What an encouragement to them this is! And how we give thanks for the faithful prayers and gifts of the people at North Lake! Once again, thank you. May the Lord continue to bless and refresh the saints at North Lake as the congregation reaches out, close to home and in places far away, to bless others in Jesus’ name. Grace and peace, Robert J. Weingartner

Mission (Cont’d) Februar y 2nd Mile Offering - Haiti / Undie Sunda y - Tem Hiesberger Last year we collected 5,229 pair of undies for the poor, naked children of Haiti. We also collected $5,623 in cash.
Housing in the Cite Soleil dump.
Just east of Haiti’s capital, Port au Prince, is a very large dump called Cite Soleil. It is so big that the areas have names to distinguish them from one another; somewhat like the various Villages here. This is where the similarities stop! Deposited in this dump are medical, surgical, human and animal wastes, needles, etc. People actually live on this twelve-foot-deep pile of trash. Frequently the people are barefooted as they forage for food alongside pigs, cows and flies. Children also search for tin, glass and plastic which they hope to sell.
Love a Child (LAC) and several other mission teams take food, water, supplies, and provide medical care to these people, but the problems persist. As a result, a relatively new project of relocating residents from these dumps to a part of LAC Mission called Miracle Village has come about. Here Haitians reside in a three-room home consisting of two bedrooms and a living room. These sturdy, wooden houses have concrete floors and a porch. There is no electricity or running water. Once moved to Miracle Village, the new residents can attend church and school, use the infirmary, drink fresh water and attend the agricultural training center. The cost of these sturdy homes is $5,000. Last year we collected more than that in cash!
This is my house? Hallelujah!
The 2nd Mile Offering in February is going to the people in Haiti. You have a wonderful opportunity to choose to donate children’s undies or contribute to building a house—or BOTH! We are so blessed here at North Lake; please open your hearts to these poor families. Anything you can do to help alleviate their poverty will be greatly appreciated. Child receiving Undies.
Letter for Sebber Banda and Rev. Nedson Zulu - Tete Province of Mozambique North Lake Brethren in Mission, For all you friends, words will never be enough to say THANK YOU. But God understands better what we mean from deep down in our hearts. May God continue blessing you all for THE LOVE OFFERING. You all proved to us that we have friends who really care and can reach out with us to the needy communities especially where health is concerned. We thank God for your Love and it's a great MIRACLE through you at God's only time and from people of His Choice. May God add more to all your families and provide all your needs whenever need be and when possible. Many blessings and thanks from all of us in Africa Mozambique Tete Province with all friends and families.

Care & Fellow ship Stephen Ministry Program - Dr. Bob Hazlett, Stephen Ministry Team Leader Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Stephen Ministry is our congregation’s one-toone caregiving ministry. Our Stephen Ministers are Christian men and women volunteers that come from all walks of life with one commonality, a passion for bringing Christ’s love and care to people during a time of need. In order to become a Stephen Minister, they are required to attend 50 hours of training. The training teaches the skills necessary for our Stephen Ministers to provide one-to-one care to people who are experiencing difficulties in life such as a death of a loved one, job loss, chronic or terminal illness, relocation or separation due to military deployment, hospitalization, or other life changing difficulty. Our Stephen Minister begins a caring relationship when he or she is paired with a person going through a difficult period in life. The Stephen Minister then meets with that person on a weekly basis to listen, care, encourage, and provide emotional and spiritual support. Males are matched with males and females with females. The caring relationship is confidential and lasts as long as the person is in need of
care. Our Stephen Ministers meet twice monthly and participate in group supervision with our Stephen Ministry leaders who provide guidance and support. During the second meeting of the month, continuing educational classes are provided by the Leaders, or guest speakers from community resources, that help enhance our skills and the services we provide to others. The Stephen Ministry is supervised by Stephen Leaders who not only went through the 50 hours of initial training, but are also are required to attend a 7-day leadership course. The course consists of teaching skills needed to operate and supervise a successful Stephen Ministry program. If you would like a compassionate Stephen Minister to walk with you through troubled times in your life, or have a calling to become a Stephen Minister, call Pastor Lynn Miller at 352-753-8484. (Stephen Ministry calls are confidential.) Blessings, Dr. Bob Hazlett

NLPC Healing/Prayer Ministry Corner NLPC promotes and practices the healing ministry of Jesus Christ. Therefore, it is important that all of its members should be thoroughly familiar with what Jesus said and what Jesus did. The only way to do this is to carefully study all of the Gospel records of His healing ministry. Once His methods and procedures are mastered, the student will have an authoritative basis to join the Healing Team. there will be a Healing Service on Sunday, February 25, at 4:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary. ------------------------------------After the Traditional Services on Sunday, a member of the healing team will be available in the Library to pray with anyone desiring prayer for special needs and circumstances. After the Contemporary Service, a member of the healing team will be available at the prayer banner in the Fellowship Hall.
