By RANDOR GUY THE AVM STORY - 86 Here in the Himalayas, the Raja joined a group of sanyasis and stayed with them for years. However, he claimed, family ties pulled him back and he came home to the fold. While many family members accepted him as the dead Raja come back to life, his wife did not, because she felt convinced that he was a fake and an impostor! The ‘Bhowal Sanyasi’, as he came to be known, went to court to be recognized as the Raja and be given his estate and properties. The long legal proceedings went from court to court for years and finally, on appeal, it reached the Privy Council in London, then the highest court of appeal for India. The Privy Council recognized him as the real Raja but, regretfully, he passed away before it gave judgment in his favor! ‘The Bhowal Sanyasi Case’ hit the headlines and many Indian writers made use of it to write novels and films. C.N. Annadurai and A. S. A. Sami made use of some of the elements in their film ‘Velaikari’. The Bengali writer Prabhat Kumar Mukherjee adapted it for his novel which Debaki Bose filmed as ‘Ratna Deep’. It had in its cast noted Bengali stars of the day Pahadi Sanyal, Chaya Devi, Manju De and Abhi Bhattacharya. The Bhowal Sanyasi Case has been filmed in many forms more than once in Bengali with success. Bengali films have always enjoyed a certain status and prestige in Indian Cinema and the image had been built up by talented and famed directors and producers like B. N. Sircar, Debaki Bose, P. C. Barua, Bimal Roy, Nitin Bose, Tarun Mukherjee, Tapan Sinha, Ritwik Ghatak, Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen, Buddhadev Dasgupta. Aparna Sen and others. Not surprisingly, Meiyappan was impressed by Bengali Cinema. As his humble contribution, he produced a Bengali film ‘Aakash Pathal’ (1960) with Pahadi Sanyal and Arundathi Mukherjee in the lead and directed by Prabhat Mukherjee. One of the Hindi films produced by Meiyappan was ‘Chaya’ (1961). Hrishikesh Mukherjee, one of the top filmmakers of India and editordirector, made the film with Hindi film stars Sunil Dutt, Nirupa Roy and Asha Parekh. During the making of the movie, something happened which speaks volumes about Meiyappan’s relentless quest for perfection. It relates to a still photograph of the lead pair Sunil Dutt and Asha Parekh. In every film still photographs are taken in large numbers to serve many purposes. Indeed, in every film’s budget, a sizable sum is provided for still photographs and a separate technician is employed to take them to be used ‘hoardings’ as they are commonly known in the field. They are given to the press for free advance publicity, for preparing designs for advertisements, posters, hoardings (bill boards), publicity materials like press-books, handouts and such. And for technicians like Assistant Directors to check the continuity of actor’s costumes, jewels, sets, set decorations, and set props and their position in the previous scene so that ‘continuity jumps’ as they are known, could be avoided. In many films one can see such errors. The hero wears a white shirt driving a car and when he reaches home after a long drive through many roads, it turns blue! In some films even the car changes. In a hit film, the heroine wins a tennis match but, when she reaches home, she caries a badminton racquet in her hands plus a trophy! It speaks of lack of professionalism which Meiyappan hated. In ‘Chaya’, a sill of Sunil Dutt and Asha Parekh was taken and Meiyappan was not satisfied with the quality of the photograph. He asked for a re-take of the still and the two stars were engaged for two long days for the still photography session. Many rolls were exposed by different photographers and yet Meiyappan was not satisfied with the results. Such was his passion for quality! (To be continued)

MTC bus kills woman

Nagar) was fatally knocked down by an MTC bus (47-A, Adyar– ICF) at 7.30 a.m on Oct.15 at the junction of Habibullah Road and Thirumalai Road in T. Nagar. Vijaya, who was working as a servant maid, was returning home after work. Pondy Bazaar traffic police are investigating the case. She is survived by her parents, and sons Premkumar (18) and Keerthivasan (8). Her husband had deserted her.
