Description This workshop will introduce participants to the skills and techniques used to create professional quality images of the natural world. Topics include exposure control and light metering, the principles of visual composition, the qualities of natural light, advanced digital techniques, and the philosophy and tradition of the artist in nature. The program will incorporate slide-illustrated lectures, group discussion, and student feedback. No experience necessary. Course Schedule:

1/19 Introduction and Overview: • Opening slideshow and discussion • The history and evolution of nature photography • Preview of photographic technique, composition, and light 1/26 Photographic Technique • The tools of the trade • Light metering and exposure • Depth of field and motion 2/2 Composition • The principles of visual communication • Color and contrast • Perspective and point view 2/9 Natural Light • Photography’s “magic hour” • Low and high contrast light • Backlighting, silhouettes, and sunbursts 2/16 Advanced Technique • Digital post-processing and image manipulation • Time-lapse, astro, and advanced digital techniques •Q&A 2/23 Course Conclusion
