NOW

One thing that has not changed over the last few decades is that Niles Township High School students and their families expect and deserve a quality, comprehensive secondary education. But other circumstances have changed dramatically. For example: • 1 out of every 4 students in District 219 needs financial assistance and uses the free and reduced lunch program. • Students need a graphing calculator for every math class beginning with algebra. The cost for the model used in our schools is more than $125. • Teachers emphasize collaborative learning, the Internet is the primary research tool and computers are indispensable for completing class assignments. To stay competitive, students must be proficient in the latest technology and computer applications. • In 1986, tuition and room and board for an in-state student at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, totaled $6,980. Today, an in-state student will pay more than $23,000. Alumni contributions to the District 219 Education Foundation will help financially needy students improve their academic performance. Eligible items for funding include: ACT preparation classes, graphing calculators, Advanced Placement test fees, personal computers and other technology assistance, and other assistance for high school-related activities.

Alumni Since April 2007, the District 219 Education Foundation for Excellence has provided more than $32,000 to assist District 219 students. Recent grants include: • • • •

15 computers provided to students who cannot afford computer technology at home. 40 graphing calculators for students who cannot pay for their own. Two Niles Central students received $2,000 scholarships for college tuition. Academic fees such as Advanced Placement tests, transcript fees and college applications fees were paid for students at Niles North, Niles West and Niles Central. • Bus transportation to take students on college visits to Illinois colleges. The majority of these students are first-generation college students (their parents did not attend college).
