Energy Saving Solutions Introduction: Energy efficiency requirements are becoming more rigorous with the growing concerns for environmental and economic sustainability. Around 70 percent of energy usage and 63 percent of greenhouse gas emissions are estimated to be associated with heating, cooling and ventilation. HVAC typically accounts for 40-50 percent of the total energy bill for businesses and commercial buildings. Properly selected energy efficient HVAC equipment can significantly reduce energy costs and meet environmental standards. Petra engineering industries provide a wide range of solutions that incorporate the latest technologies that facilitate energy saving requirements and enhance indoor air quality and occupant comfort requirements.
Air Conditioning, Heat Pump and Refrigeration systems affect global worming through the release of refrigerants into the atmosphere and also through the release of carbon dioxide from generating the power of the system through its life time. To reduce the impact of HVAC Systems on the Environment; Petra has replaced ozonedepleting chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) by hydro-chlorofluorocarbons HCFCs (R-410a and R407c Refrigerants, Ozone Friendly), Petra produces high efficient products to reduce the electrical energy consumption for its units, thus helping the environment.
Highly-Insulated Air Handling Units: Petra’s AHUs thermal resistance has been improved by using high resistive insulation material, closed-cell foam insulation, with a lower thermal conductivity and 2” – standard thickness, 4” optional: P e t ra ’s exc e p t i o n a l l y designed full thermal break air handling unit provides energy saving benefits by diminishing the heat transfer losses due to conduction. By introducing an element of low thermal conductivity into the unit frame and panels, the flow of thermal energy between conductive materials is significantly reduced or prevented. Variable Air Volume (VAV): Petra's VAV system utilizing communication controller on VAV terminals enables digital communication between the unit controller and the central building automation system. The result is a system that can be monitored from a central point, offers control flexibility, and enables system-optimized control strategies. Buildings can be controlled more intelligently because the data (such as airflow, damper position, fan, and heat status) is available to perform complex systemcontrol strategies and diagnostics from a central monitoring station.

Energy saving is accomplished through air volume reduction and reduced fan energy consumption at part load conditions. In addition, VAV systems provide multi zone independently controlled spaces (independent thermostats) that accommodate varying levels of comfort. Energy Recovery System:
C. Heat pipe coils:
1- Air-to-Air Energy Recovery is the process of recovering energy or/and moisture from an air stream at a high temperature or humidity to an air stream at a low temperature 2- This process is important in maintaining acceptable indoor air quality (IAQ) while maintaining low energy costs and reducing overall energy consumption. 3- Energy can be recovered either in its sensible (temperature only) or latent (moisture) form, or combination of both from multiple sources. 4- Units used for sensible energy recovery are called sensible heat exchange devices or heat recovery ventilators (HRVs). 5- Devices that transfer both heat and moisture are known as energy or enthalpy devices or energy recovery ventilators (ERVs).
Wrap around heat pipes are air-to-air heat exchangers that are installed in the airstream upstream and downstream of a cooling coil to deliberately reduce the Sensible Heat Ratio (SHR) below a standard air conditioning system’s .75. Depending on the application, they’re also used to replace all, or part of, the necessary reheat in a system to minimize energy usage The precool section is located in the incoming air stream before the cooling coil. When warm air passes over the first section, the liquid refrigerant vaporizes, moving heat to the reheat section ( downstream from the cooling coil). Since heat has been removed from the air before the cooling coil, air passing through the cooling coil drops to a lower temperature, resulting in more condensate removal. The over cooled air is then reheated to a comfortable temperature and a lower relative humidity by the reheat section, using the same heat originally absorbed by the first section. The process takes place with no energy use due to the passive nature of the heat pipe
6- HRVs and ERVs are available for commercial and industrial applications as well as for residential and small-scale commercial uses.
A. Energy recovery wheels: This device proposes a rotating surface composed of small aluminum cells, which transfer sensible energy (hot or cold air). When desiccant material is added to the aluminum cells, the heat wheel transfers both sensible and latent energy (moisture) from one air stream to the other.

This entire process of pre-cool and reheat is accomplished with no additional energy use. The result is an air conditioning system with the ability to remove 50 to 100% more moisture than regular systems.
B. Cross flow heat exchanger: This type of heat recovery relies on the thermal conduction for energy recovery. It consists of alternate aluminum layers of plates separated and sealed and this type is limited to sensible energy recovery. When the plate exchanger is composed of layers of polymeric membrane sheets, the plates also allow moisture to be transferred from one air stream to the other.

Due to increasing awareness of noise as an environmental pollutant, Petra Engineering Industries Co. developed the Ultra Low Noise chillers with the lowest dBA level on the market today geared towards noise-sensitive design requirements. Petra designed the Ultra Low Noise chillers by using their 'Patented Design' for the compressor compartment. In addition, the chillers use the highly efficient, low noise screw compressors and cast aluminum sickle-shaped fans with high efficiency external rotor motors, to further reduce noise levels. When measured against the ARI standards, the highest dBA of Petra's chillers is lower than the minimum dBA requirement for the same tonnage listed in the ASHRAE standard. In addition, these chillers can be supplied in systems up to 500 tons and take into consideration the chiller C.O.P. in both part load and full load values. Petra’s Ultra Low Noise chillers have been installed in projects that have strict sound regulations such as schools, universities, libraries and large commercial projects in residential areas of the USA, UK and other countries, where noise control is imperative.

In addition to the new construction jobs, modular chillers can be considered as a perfect solution for the renovation jobs where it is too expensive to repair or operate an existing system. Petra's Dry Cooler (PDC) Unit is the outdoor element of Petra's ESC System which is designed to work under all normal conditions. Its low noise features make it suitable for all applications (offices, residential, shopping centers, etc.) Different capacities are available to match the PWSP (Water Source) series and one Dry Cooler can be coupled to multiple PWSP (Water Source) Units. Petra's Dry Cooler coils are designed to deliver their respective duties at an optimum performance levels of design conditions. Coils are manufactured of seamless copper tubes mechanically expanded into aluminum fins. End plates contain die formed extruded tube holes for maximum tube protection and support. The ESC system consists of Petra's heat pump water source (indoor unit) which operates in either heating or cooling mode providing the required comfort conditions to the application space. The ESC system is made up of a closed loop of water; therefore loss of water is highly unlikely. Compared to other HVAC systems, Petra's ESC system is most suitable for multileveled and high rise buildings such as apartments, hotels, schools, hospitals and offices. Petra's ESC system is designed to e l i m i n a t e p ow e r s h a r i n g p ro b l e m s between occupants by providing each user with their own indoor unit and pump. Therefore, each individual electricity bill leads to actual consumption per user. Another advantage of the ESC system is during the milder seasons such as spring and fall, occupants in the warmer and interior of the building operate the ESC system in cooling mode while occupants in the cooler end of the building operate the ESC system in heating mode. This case provides heat recovery and produces great energy savings in addition to increasing the COP significantly.

PETRA’s Variable Refrigerant Flow (PVRF) with DC inverter compressor and R-410A refrigerant, offer a wide range of capacities to meet the customer requirements for different applications. It is a linear system that makes use of a variable Proportional Integral (PI) control system which uses refrigerant pressure sensors to give added control over inverter and ON /OFF control compressors in order to abbreviate control steps into smaller units to provide precise control in both small and larger areas. PETRA PVRF systems enable individual control of up to 64 indoor units of different capacities and types at a ratio of 50~130 % in comparison with the outdoor units capacity.
