LOCATION Roblin is located in the Rural Municipality of Shell River at the intersection of Highways 5 and 83. PTH 5 is the major east-west route, connecting Roblin to the Saskatchewan border (14 km west) and Dauphin (93 km east). PTH 83 connects Roblin to Swan River (122 km north) and the US border (270 km south). Known as the “Palms to Pines Route”, PTH 83 is the longest stretch of highway in North America, stretching from Mexico to Swan River.

The Roblin area was settled in the 1880s as the region’s agricultural land was developed. With the arrival of the railway in 1903 came a large number of settlers to the current downtown area. Initially known as the Village of Goose Lake, the community was renamed Roblin in 1904 in honour of Sir Rodmond Roblin, who served as Manitoba’s Premier from 1900 to 1915.

Agricultural development lead to rapid economic growth in the Roblin area. By 1907, three elevators, a flour mill and a lumber mill were in operation. The Village of Roblin was officially incorporated in 1913 and has experienced steady growth since then. It was incorporated as the Town of Roblin on May 1, 1962.

RICH HERITAGE The area is rich in history, on display in the area’s museums and historical attractions. The Keystone Pioneer Museum showcases the history of the region through period buildings and furnishings. At Inglis, you’ll find the Inglis Elevators National Historic Site, the last remaining row of five standard plan grain elevators in Canada, as well as Frank Skinner Arboretum Trail, located at the original nursery of one of Canada’s most innovative horticulturists. Here you’ll also discover the unique St. Elijah Romanian Orthodox Church Museum and Paulenko Romanian Folk House. THE GREAT OUTDOORS Within minutes of Roblin are some of Manitoba’s most spectacular parks. To the southwest is Riding Mountain National Park, Manitoba’s first national park. To the north is Duck Mountain Provincial Park, known for its clear, spring-fed lakes and abundant wildlife, including moose, white-tailed deer, black bears, foxes, lynx, coyotes and timber wolves. And just minutes south is Asessippi Provincial Park on man-made Lake of the Prairies, one of Manitoba’s best walleye fisheries. There are always plenty of great activities for outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy. In summer, residents and visitors alike cool down at the Roblin Leisure Aquatic Centre with its junior Olympic-sized swimming pool, wading pool, spray fountains, 112-foot water slide and 10-person hot tub. The Roblin Golf & Country Club offers a scenic 9-hole layout. Take a hike, mountain bike or horseback ride on the Crocus Trail, part of the Canada-wide TransCanada Trail which passes through the area. FLY-FISHING CAPITAL OF MANITOBA The Roblin area, with its abundance of small streams, rivers and lakes, is recognized as one of the world’s best areas for fly-fishing. Goose Lake, located within Roblin, is stocked with rainbow and brown trout. The 67kilometre long Lake of the Prairies is ideal for fishing, boating and wildlife viewing. And for real fishing variety, cast your line into the Blue Lakes and Child’s Lake in Duck Mountain Provincial Park. These are also great lakes for boating, canoeing and swimming. SNOWY FUN The region is connected to neighbouring communities by a network of over 1,000 kilometres of snowmobile trails. South of Roblin near Inglis is Asessippi Ski Area and Winter Park, one of Manitoba’s newest winter attractions with its winter village and 25 downhill runs. BUILDING LOTS Building lots are readily available, offering the opportunity for new residents to acquire real estate suitable for new construction. Many of these new building lots have a fantastic view of Goose Lake. They are away from the busy shuffle of town, but only minutes away from all the conveniences.

Roblin Children’s Center Inc. is a non-profit organization that is government-funded, subsidized and licensed for 16 pre-school spaces. Childcare services are provided for children aged 2 to 12 years. The Center provides a varied program that enhances each child’s growth and development in all areas, with a flexible, age-appropriate daily routine including structured and unstructured play. ■

The Town of Roblin provides weekly garbage pick-up. The Roblin Shell River Landfill Site is located 3 miles north of Roblin. ■

RECYCLING DEPOT

AIR The Roblin Shell River Airport has a 3,200-foot paved airstrip with night lighting that is capable of handling air ambulances and some models of Lear Jet under certain conditions. There are no regularlyscheduled flights in or out of this airport. The nearest international airports are located in Winnipeg, Regina and Saskatoon. HANDI-TRANSIT Handi-Transit Service provides transportation for seniors and the mobility disadvantaged for the purpose of work, medical appointments, school, shopping, recreation and personal activities. TAXI Ted’s Taxi offers 24-hour taxi service.

To promote recycling and composting, the town has an active composting program that provides finished compost to residents at no additional cost. ■

Roblin is on VIA Rail’s Hudson Bay Route linking Winnipeg and Churchill. Service is provided three times per week. CN’s secondary mainline runs through Roblin.

PERMITS & LICENSES

The Roblin Planning District is responsible for building permits for houses, commercial/light industrial buildings and various small buildings less than 600 m2 (6000 ft2) and less than three stories within the Town of Roblin and RM of Shell River. The RM of Hillsburg does not belong to a Planning District; you must apply for a building permit through the Manitoba Department of Labour. A variety of visiting services are also available, including speech therapy, occupational therapy, physiotherapy and other health and wellness programs.

CURREY PARK

Currey Park is home to three baseball diamonds, a softball diamond, one-mile walking trail, waterfowl nesting sites, track oval and a picnic area. These grounds are maintained on a regular basis and host many busy evenings. The annual Canada Day Festival takes place at Currey Park. ■

GOOSE LAKE

Scenic Goose Lake is located within the town of Roblin. A campground situated by the lake has electrical hookups, barbecue pits, picnic sites, fire wood, drinking water and showers. Goose Lake is aerated and is stocked every year with Rainbow and Brown Trout, providing excellent fishing year-round. The lake is how Roblin became known as the Fly-Fishing Capital of Manitoba.

ROBLIN & DISTRICT CENTENNIAL ARENA

This spacious 1,200-seat facility is home to Roblin’s senior and minor hockey teams, figure skating club and the Recreation Administration office. The arena offers free public skating, concession and heated seniors viewing area. ■

ROBLIN CURLING CENTRE

The Curling Centre was built in 1987 and has four sheets of artificial ice complete with a refrigeration unit installed in 1997. Club bonspiels take place in March. The on-site concession and upstairs viewing lounge make you feel right at home. ROBLIN GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB The Roblin Golf & Country Club is a challenging, fully-irrigated, scenic 9-hole golf course with an excellent layout and setting. This course features undulating grass greens, various encounters with water and a fullservice clubhouse and pro shop.
