The electronic ball-tracking technology is synonymous with Grand Slams and ATP World Tour events, as well as Davis and Fed Cup-level events throughout the world. Each player has three unsuccessful challenges per set, with an additional challenge if the set reaches a tiebreak. Data shows that on average less than 30% of calls are overturned.

2016: Querrey Aces Ram-Tough Challenge in All-American Singles Final First All-American Final in 13 Years Puts Querrey in Winners Circle For Eighth Time

S

am Querrey battled from a break down in both sets to beat Rajeev Ram 6-4, 7-6(6) in only the third AllAmerican final in Delray Beach Open history. Querrey won his eighth ATP title and the first since 2012. “To be in the winner’s circle, I’m really happy,” said Querrey, who had held a 4-1 series advantage over Ram despite losing to him in the 2009 Newport final. The battle of the unseeded players was the first Delray Beach All-American final matchup in 13 years—since JanMichael Gambill defeated Mardy Fish in 2003. The 6’6” Querrey trailed 2-5 in the s eco n d - s et tiebreaker, but an ensuing Ram forehand went long, leveling the score at 5-5. At 5-6, set point down, Querrey found his go-to weapon and nailed a 121mile ace, his 10th of the match. Ram then netted a forehand, and Querrey had his first Sam Querrey upset 2011 Delray match point. Beach champion Juan Martin del Potro in the semifinals, a player It looked like the 31-yearwho was 8-0 in Delray Beach old Ram would prolong the match when his big serve gave him an opportunity to approach the net after sending a forehand to the Californian’s deep corner. However, Querrey drove a running forehand past a stunned Ram that just caught the baseline. A challenge call by Ram only delayed confirmation of the end of Querrey’s four-year title drought. “When the challenge went up and was slowly going to it, I thought I missed it,” said Querrey. “It barely caught so I was pretty stoked. (Chair umpire Fergus Murphy) gave me the thumbs up when I hit it…you can’t give me that and be wrong.” Ram was serving at 4-5, 40-15 when he gift-wrapped the first set to Querrey on a litany of netted backhands. He capped those unforced errors by pushing a volley into the net, giving Querrey the break opportunity. Querrey took advantage of a Delray Beach draw where the top three seeds fell in the first round, including Top 20 players

Kevin Anderson and Bernard Tomic, and defending champion Ivo Karlovic. The top-seeded Anderson, the 2012 Delray champion and local resident, was the most QUERREY’S ROAD TO THE TITLE surprising casualty. 1R, W, Thiemo De Bakker 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 2R, W, Austin Krajicek 6-4, 6-3 Instead, the 28QF, W, Tim Smyczek (WC) 6-7(1), 7-6(4), 6-4 year-old Querrey’s SF, W, Juan Martin del Potro (WC) 7-5, 7-5 path to the finals inF, W, Rajeev Ram 6-4, 7-6(6) cluded wins over three unseeded players — Dutchman Thiemo de Bakker, and Americans Austin Krajicek and Tim Smyczek — setting up a semifinal against sentimental favorite and former US Open champion Juan Martin del Potro. Del Potro, playing on a wild card, was making his long-awaited comeback from a pair of wrist surgeries that had sidelined him for 11 months. The 2011 Delray Beach champion had not dropped a set enroute to the semifinal, including a defeat of No. 4 seed Jeremy Chardy, and was 8-0 lifetime on the Delray Beach center court.

Querrey used 10 aces and played flawless tennis in ousting del Potro as he claimed the only two service breaks in the match in the 11th games of each set. Ram, the 2011 Delray Beach doubles champion, had

Marach and Martin Deny Bryan Brothers A Fifth Delray Beach Title

D

elray’s All-American singles final got top billing, but the most exciting match of 2016 Finals Sunday was arguably the doubles championship. Oliver Marach and Fabrice Martin won a dramatic 3-6, 7-6 (9-7), 13-11 doubles joust with the Bryan Brothers, denying the top-seeded and world No. 4 twins a fifth Delray Beach title The Bryans held six match points, including one in the second-set tiebreaker and five more in the super-tiebreaker, before Martin hit a winning overhead on his second match point. “We gave everything we had today,” Martin said of the v i c t o r y against the 10-time year-end World No. 1 doubles team. “It was a great match from both sides, and there (were) some lucky points at the end and we got it, so we’re very happy with that. Sometimes it goes against us, but today it went with us.” Marach, an Austrian, Oliver Marach and Fabrice Martin faced six match points but won their second doubles and Martin, a Frenchtitle as partners, upsetting the Bryan Brothers’ man, won their second bid for a fifth Delray Beach title.

ATP title together and split the $27,830 purse. The 36-year-old Bryan twins were playing in a Delray Beach-record sixth doubles final, and were clearly the crowd favorites throughout the match. “Leading in the third set tie-breaker 5-9, that hurts,” Mike Bryan said. “I’ll probably have a sleepless night on what I could have done differently but that’s doubles. It’s a fine line, the margins are really thin.”
