A quick guide to understanding the impact of Learning Styles on communication. !

The next time you’re meeting with someone, take special note of how you’re communicating with them. There are three “BASIC” ways we take in and process information. Knowing all three makes it possible to most effectively communicate with clients, coworkers, managers…Even spouses and partners outside of work!!

!

Read the “cues” below to help you pick up on the other person’s communication preference. Remember, we all use… all three styles, but most people have a dominate preference! Once you know someone’s preference, customize your information to their style.!

!

Auditory: listening, hearing and speaking! It sounds like…! I hear what you’re saying…! That sounds good…! Tell me more…!

!

Can you explain that to me again?!

Visual: viewing, seeing and showing! It looks like…! I see what you mean…! I can’t picture it…! Looks good…!

!

Can you send me something took at!

Kinesthetic: feeling, sensing, and doing! That feels about right…! I just can't get my arms around it…! I get the sense that…! Something’s just not right about that…! (snap or clap) when they “get it”!

They like to talk it out.!

!

They will want to hear you explain something and will appreciate the opportunity to repeat back what they heard you say.

They want to see what it looks like. !

!

When they visualize it, they understand it. Use graphs, maps, color coding and other visual aides. Ask them to take notes as you talk.

They need to experience it. !

!

As you explain something, give a demonstration that they can be a part of. Let them get “hand’s on” with the material your discussing.
