Our School

School Calendar

Beijing World Youth Academy is a private, independent international school located in China’s capital city. Founded in 2001 with a small cohort of students studying the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, the school now has four urban campuses and classes from grades 1 to 12, and has developed a reputation for academic excellence coupled with a strong sense of community. A large percentage of our graduates have been accepted to leading world universities. Our school prides itself on providing a personalised environment for learning, due, in a large part, to a favourable faculty to student ratio of 1:7. Our pedagogy emphasises creativity, teamwork and a curriculum which incorporates standards from North America, Europe and Asia. We endeavour to create a friendly and studious environment, which also stresses maturity, service and personal accountability.

The academic school year consists of 180 school days divided into two semesters for DP students and three trimesters for MYP students. There are 30 class periods in each week, 6 periods per day. Twelfth grade students take the final IBDP written examinations in May and graduate in late May.

Programmes There are three main programmes: International Primary Curriculum (IPC) for grades 1 to 5, IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) for grades 6-10 and the IB Diploma Programme (DP) in grades 11-12. The MYP Stresses interdisciplinary connections and prepares students for the Diploma Programme. The DP is known as one of the most rigorous university preparatory programmes in the world with its emphasis on holistic education across six disciplines, evaluation of ideas, creativity, activity and service. Additionally, BWYA offers students in grades 6-11 who aren’t ready for the IB a separate campus (the IN Campus) with a curriculum that places heavier emphasis on language skills development. The lower grades aim to align their learning with the IB MYP, while the upper grades follow an examination curriculum from Cambridge International Examinations (IGCSE) and the IB DP.

Graduation Requirements At the beginning of their second year of the Diploma Programme, Students at BWYA are divided into two tracks, IB Diploma/Course Candidates, and BWYA High School Diploma Candidates. The graduation requirements for each track are as follows: IB Diploma/Course Candidates The following are the requirements that must be met by each of our IB Diploma/Course Candidates in order to pass the academic year: • An average score of at least 4 must be attained • All subjects must receive an IB score greater than 1 • No more than two subjects may receive an IB score lower than 3 Additionally, in order to receive the final high school diploma, students are required to have completed Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS) and Theory of Knowledge (TOK) requirements over the course of their final two years.

Assessment Our grading system is based on IB IB Letter the International Baccalaureate Mark Description Grade Organisation (IBO) standards. 7 Excellent A/A+ Grades of 1-2 indicate poor performance. A grade of 3 6 Very Good A indicates a basic understanding of 5 Good B the concepts and skills required in a particular eld of study. A grade 4 Satisfactory C of 4 or higher indicates an understanding of concepts, 3 Mediocre C/D mastery of skills and ability to 2 Poor F apply this knowledge ranging from satisfactory to excellent. 1 Very Poor F IBDP courses are equivilent in difficulty and content to A Level and Advanced Placement (AP) courses. BWYA neither calculates Grade Point Averages (GPA) nor ranks students.

The IB Diploma Programme Students have the option to enrol as IB Course candidates or as full IB Diploma candidates for their final two years of high school. To earn the IB Diploma, candidates must successfully complete and pass the Theory of Knowledge course, and meet Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS) requirements. Diploma Candidates must also earn 24 points across all six subjects on their final Diploma examinations and satisfy other requirements specified by the IBO. IB Diploma Programme courses consist of a minimum of 240 hours at Higher Level and 150 hours for Standard Level courses over the two-year duration of the programme.

Co-Curricular Choices Over forty co-curricular clubs are offered, including Forensics (Speech & Debate), Model United Nations, Roots & Shoots, Young Entrepreneurs and Orchestra. BWYA Wolves Athletic teams participate in International School Athletic Conference (ISAC) and ACAMIS (Association of China and Mongolia International Schools) competitions. Team sports include Boys and Girls Basketball, Football (Soccer) and Volleyball at the U14 and U19 age levels. Students also have the opportunity to participate in one day cross country, swimming, table tennis, and track and field competitions.

BWYA High School Diploma Candidates Students who opt to work towards the BWYA High School Diploma will take courses alongside IB Diploma/Course Candidates. Their internal assessment (BWYA grades) will be measured by the same standards as their IB counterparts. However, they will ultimately not sit for IB exams, but instead be administered internal, BWYA senior year final exams.
