ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS MAFIKENG CAMPUS (This document is subject to change) (CLOSING DATE FOR APPLICATION FORMS: 30 SEPTEMBER INTRODUCTION This document guides the student regarding the admission requirements of the NWU, Mafikeng Campus. Remember that this is only a guide and students are requested to refer back to the policy (Act 101 of 97) for full explanation of the requirements. There are several types of Grade 12 certificates in South Africa. The 3 most common ones are: The Senior Certificate (prior 2008) The National Senior Certificate (2008 onwards) Other curriculums When you want to enroll for a degree/diploma the following pointers are important: Do I have 50%, HG (for degree studies), 40%, HG (for diploma studies) or more, for English Do I have full endorsement to enter for a B-degree OR do I have endorsement to enter for a Diploma Programme. (This information is indicated at the bottom of your grade 12 certificate.) Do I comply with the university/faculty requirements of the university BUT the candidate must fully understand that although s/he complies with the requirements, it does not necessarily mean that the student will be accepted as selection of students still takes place according to availability in different programmes. There are only 3 diploma courses offered at the university and only in the Faculty of Agriculture, Science and Technology: Diploma in Animal Healtlh Diploma AGRIC in Animal Science Diploma AGRIC in Crop Science The Extended Programmes are only offered in the Faculty of Commerce and Administration and in the Faculty of Agricultural, Science and Technology. In order to qualify for a diploma or extended programmes, the student must adhere to the following: DIPLOMA PROGRAMMES 40% (E) or more for English (HG) A pass in Maths (Commerce and Administration) A pass in Maths and Science (Agri Science, Science and Technology) EXTENDED PROGRAMMES 40% or more for English A pass in Maths/Maths Literacy Write a selection test (SATAP)
THE NATIONAL SENIOR CERTIFICATE (FROM 2008 ONWARDS) The NSC is calculated on your APS. When calculating your APS you must keep the following in mind: You must have passed 7 subjects according to prescribed requirements. Your score for LO is not taken into consideration – thus, only the score of the 6 prescribed subjects are added together. They are: 2 Languages (English is compulsory) Maths/Maths Literacy And 3 subjects from the designated list. OTHER CURRICULUMS AND MATURE AGE UNDERGRADUATE REQUIREMENTS FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS International students who have written a non-South African Matriculation examination have to obtain “Clearance” (Exemption) from the Matriculation Board (HESA) before the University is permitted to register them. Four subjects passed at GCE O-Level (Symbols A,B,C or Grade 1-6) at least three of the subjects must have been passed at the same examination sitting. In addition the applicant must have reached the age 23 on or before 31 December of the year of registration. A pass in English Language is a requirement or must have passed 1 year postschool qualification in the English Medium. Students who have written and passed GCE O-level together with A-Level i.e. passed a total of 5A and O-Level Symbols A_/O-Level Symbols A-C or 1-6.
IGSCE HIGSCE O-LEVELS A-LEVELS MATURE AGE 23
HIGSCE/IGCSE The Matriculation Board (HESA) will issue a certificate of full exemption if the following requirements are met:
Must pass 5 subjects o Must pass in: 4 x HIGCSE (=HG) 1 x IGSCE (=SG) st nd Must have English 1 or 2 language At least one subject from group 1 or 2 At least two subjects from groups 3,4 and 5 (Must have at least 4 different groups). Must pass at least Mathematics on IGSCE to get any subject from group 5 recognised as HIGSCE.

~7~ A-LEVELS For matriculation exemption a person must at one or more sittings for the examination obtain a pass in a minimum of either five subjects approved by the Committee of Principals for this purpose, at least two of which shall be approved Advanced Level subjects and the remainder approved Ordinary Level subjects, or four approved subjects, three of which shall be approved Advanced Level subjects and the remaining subject an approved Ordinary Level subject. Such person included in the four or five subjects at least one subject selected from each of the following groups: GROUP l

Afrikaans, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Italian, Latin, Nederlands, Portuguese or any other language approved by the Committee of Principals.

O LEVELS It is recommended that these students should apply directly to HESA to see whether they qualify for full exemption.

MATURE AGE EXEMPTION – 23 YEARS You qualify for Mature Age exemption if you attained the age of 23 years before or during the year in which you wish to enroll for a B-degree degree with a minimum prescribed full-time duration of three years.
