System Design Design templates are helpful tools in predicting pipe size required, design flow rates, friction and head characteristics, flow velocities, and average retention times throughout the system. Each template is for a specific pump type and a specific type and grade of pipe. There are eight templates, four for centrifugal grinder pumps based on Barnes SGV pump characteristics and four for progressing cavity grinder pumps based on Barnes SGPC pump characteristics. It is suggested that spreadsheet templates be saved as “XLT” files on your hard drive. Specific use applications should be saved individually as “XLS” files. Follow the following steps in order: • A Sample Printed Page is Attached for Your Reference • Open Excel • Open The Appropriate Design Template • Save as “XLS” file on your hard drive or floppy disk….include project name in file name. Suggested example: (ABC LAKE.xls) • In cells P11 and P12, enter the Project Name and Project Location • In cell E19, enter the “c” value desired from Hazen-Williams equation. It is strongly recommended the value be “150.” • All of the following steps involve table entry data. The Pipe Segment numbers are already entered in Column A. It is imperative that these numbers remain in consecutive order or errors will occur. If you find you need to add some rows, you may do so by adding them as decimal. For example: If pipe segment number 1 needs to be divided into two pipe segments, you may call them 1.1 and 1.2 respectively. (See next paragraph before proceeding) • When a new row is needed, DO NOT INSERT A NEW ROW. Instead, renumber column A. Inserting a row will insert a blank row with no formulas. In the example above, we wanted to insert one additional row so that the original Pipe Segment 1 would end up being two lines, Pipe Segments 1.1 and 1.2. If the numbers 2 through 286 were selected in Column A, cut and pasted beginning with Pipe Segment 3 (cell A27) through 287, the space required is achieved and no formulas are lost. The spreadsheet now ends with row 286 and there are two rows available for 1.1 and 1.2. You may need to re-format to one decimal place. • Begin entering data in Column C for each respective pipe segment. Columns requiring data entry are Columns C through G. • Only after the completion of preceding step, enter data into Column B. Data required is the number of the pipe segment “into which” a respective pipe segment flows. For example, if Pipe Segment 2 discharges into Pipe Segment 5 in a design layout, the number 5 would be entered in Column B of Pipe Segment 2.

System Design • Wherever a pipe segment discharges to atmosphere, for instance into the wet well of a lift station, enter the Number Zero in column B. • Iterations to verify system performance under varying circumstances are easily performed with the spreadsheet format. For example, to understand what happens when an air release valve opens simply alter the basic calculation as follows: 1. Change control datum in all pipe segments pumping to the air release valve to the elevation of the air release valve. 2. Change Column B value to Numeric Zero in the pipe segment containing the respective air release valve. Result will be system performance upstream of the air release valve when the air release valve is in the open position. • Printing the spreadsheet 1. Highlight all cells that you desire to print beginning with the last row, Column W. back through Cell A1. 2. Click File, Print Area, Set Print Area. 3. You are now ready to print the spreadsheet.
