Course Description The National Capital Confucius Institute at Carleton University is pleased to offer Daily Chinese Conversation for Beginner Course for general public. This course is designed for those with little or no knowledge of the Chinese language to learn the semantics of everyday life in Chinese, while selected culture topics are integrated with the language training. This course will help the participants properly engage initial contacts, enjoy basic social interactions, and gain confidence to communicate in various situations. Approximately 40 essential sentences will be mastered to achieve survival proficiency in this 4 week program. This course uses the Everyday Chinese as the workbook, developed on the latest research in China on authentic Chinese language for real-life communication. An audio pen and Everyday Chinese handbook will be provided during the course for after-class practice. Our research based learning technology allows the participants to use the audio pen as a private tutor to read back the Chinese-English bilingual handbook, extending the Chinese language and culture learning experience to your busy work and study schedules at your own pace anytime anywhere. Selected theme topics will be introduced and discussed at each session, including: 1. Greeting: meeting and farewell, casual and formal introduction 2. Connect: making appointment, phone calls 3. Dining: at a Chinese restaurant, and a Chinese family gathering 4. Shopping: at local stores and boutiques 5. Local Transit: local taxi, bus and subway, domestic flight and high speed train 6. At bank: changing money, paying bills, and using a credit card Lectures will be delivered by the accredited Chinese instructors and professors from Central China Normal University. They will not only share their rich experiences of teaching Chinese language and culture, but also their research and knowledge of the current cultural and social economic development in China.
