KIOWA 49 - WAR EXPEDITION SONGS HANDGAME OF THE KIOWA, KIOWA -APACHE AND COMANCHE Handgame is a very old hide and guess game which has long been popular among tribes of the Plains, Great Basin, Plateau, and Northwest Coast. Forty-nine is a social dance which is popular today among Indians of the Plains and Southwest tribes, and at intertribal gatherings in big cities where thousands of Indians have relocated in order to find employment. Among Kiowa, 49 is traditionally held after 11:00 PM of midnight until about 3:00 AM. Sometimes a dance will go to sunrise. The dance starts when a group of men gather around a drum, and with a roll of the drum, start the first song. As the songs get underway, those who wish

Southern Plains

Drumbeat to dance form a close circle around the singers and drum. As more people join the dance, a second circle is formed closely around the first, then a third around the second, and so on. A big dance may have seven or eight concentric circles of dancers moving clockwise around the drum. Kiowa 49 was originally a war ceremony performed on the eve of a war expedition or war party. A war leader would go through the camp singing war expedition songs and those who wanted to go with him on the expedition would join him in the singing. The group wound continue through the camp, singing as they went, to the leaders tipi wherein they would sing throughout the night. Although most 49’s today are strictly social, a 49 will occasionally be held for a Kiowa serviceman who is about to go overseas, and many of his family and friends take part, much in the tradition of a century ago. WAR DANCE SONGS OF THE PONCA In the 19th century, and perhaps earlier, what is today called war dance was traditionally performed by an organization of Ponca men who were selected for their courage in battle and dedicated selflessness. For reasons now obscure, they were called the He-tho-shka. Each meeting of the Hethoshka was announced by an appointed camp crier. It was the self-imposed duty of the members to feed everyone who attended, and to give food or goods to those in need. When the Hethoshka danced, it was an inspiring array of the membership. The songs told of their deeds, eloquently recording them for posterity, while the crier loudly called their praises. Today the Hethoshka tradition lives among the Ponca much as it did a century ago. A war dance is never held without feeding everyone present, and giving away food and goods continues as it always has. When the camp crier calls the dancers, and the Flag Song of the Hethoshka is sung, the dance begins. - VOL. 1 18 war dance songs of the Ponca Hethoshka sung by Lamont Brown, Harry Buffalohead, Joe H. Rush, Russell Rush, Sylvester Warrior, Albert Waters, Louis Yellow Horse, Alice Cook, Lucy C.F. Ribs, and Stella Yellow Horse. Camp Crier is James Waters.
