Certificated short course in ISO 14001: 2015 based environmental management systems A new, third revision of the ISO 14001 standard

The flagship management system standard of the International Organisation for Standardisation (IOS), the environmental management system (EMS) standard ISO 14001 has been reviewed and revised. It is published as the third or 2015 revision of the standard. What makes the third revision of the standard different from the previous version? The ISO 14001: 2015 version of the EMS standard is the first existing management system standard in the ISO-stable that has been transitioned to the new high level structure (HLS) for management system standards. The HLS is an attempt by the IOS to harmonise the wide range of management system standards that are being generated, adopted and used. The HLS brings a common structure, with common basic text and common terminologies to all IOS-based management system standards. This improved alignment of different management system standards benefit the end-user community who wishes to adopt, implement and use more than one management system standard. The other major driver to influence the nature and extent of the third revision of the EMS standard is the future challenges (FC) initiative. The FC-initiative defined all the innovative developments in the environmental management field since 1996 that became main stream environmental management practice. Al these FC elements were adopted and included in the 2015 version of the standard.

The five day EMS development course offered by the CEM. The very popular CEM course: Implementing Environmental Management Systems (ISO 14001) had been reviewed and revised to conform to the 2015 version of the ISO 14001: 2015 standard. Prof Nel has also reviewed and revised all the registers and other tools that can be used to give effect to the requirements of the revised standard. New registers have also been generated for requirements that are entirely new to the standard.

Why doing the EMS implementation course with the CEM? Prof Johan Nel of the CEM has offered EMS training since1996 when the first version of the ISO 14001 standard was published. He also represented South Africa at the TC 207 WG 5 meetings and participated to generate the new version of the standard. He therefor has first-hand knowledge of all the intentions behind the revised text of the third revision of the standard. Prof Nel also assisted a number of organisations to become certified to the ISO 14001 standard. He is also a registered as a Lead EMS auditor with SAATCA.

Other EMS training services offered by the CEM The CEM offers a range of EMS training services at both our state of the art training facilities at the North-West University in Potchefstroom and on site when required. These courses are listed in Table 1. Two types of EMS training is offered, competence based training that attracts a university certificate of successful completion when assessment criteria are fulfilled and awareness based courses that attract a Letter of Attendance as proof of participation.
