[email protected] 152 years ago in June 1860, a Japanese delegation group visited Philadelphia after completing the ratification in Washington D.C. Eight delegates from the group were invited to the legendary Philadelphia Chess Club and showed Japanese Shogi. It took place in Athenaeum in Old City Philadelphia (mecca of chess club at the time, an archive library building constructed in1845) which has a small room called the “Chess Room” on the second floor where the chess table used back then is still left intact to this day. The article at that time interestingly described that two gentlemen named Umajiro Yamada and Ken Sano showed how to play Shogi by comparing Shogi and Western chess in traditional Samurai clothes and swords. It also mentioned a Shogi board and pieces, unique Shogi rules, comparison between Shogi and chess, and harmonious atmosphere among players and introduced “Shogi” as “Sho-ho-ye.” This article is said to be probably the first record of Shogi cited outside Japan. This December, five professional Japanese Shogi players will be visiting Philadelphia to recreate the encounter made by Shogi and chess 152 years ago. On December 7, we will celebrate the first-ever visit by professional shogi players to Philadelphia, Master Hatasu Itoh will talk about the history and charm of shogi. Alan Baker, former National Shogi Champion (Associate Professor, Swarthmore College) will introduce Shogi to participants interested in the art of game. Enjoy conversation with professional players while enjoying sushi made by Genji and tea provided by Maido .

Professionals Profile Hatasu Itoh (7-dan) Started playing at age 11, he became professional in 1975. Obtained 7-dan in 1995 and played total of 1026 games until retiring in 2011. Author of numerous “Tsume-Shogi” books and creator of game software. Born in Kyoto. Write captions for the selected photos. Takuma Oikawa (4-dan) Born in Saitama and started playing at age 5, he became professional in 2007.
Asuka Itoh (1-dan) Born in Tokyo and taught by her mother at age 7, she followed footsteps of her father, Hatasu Itoh, to become a professional in 1995. Worked as a board member of Female Shogi Professional Club from 2005 to 2007. Retired in 2009.
Ayano Nodasawa (1-kyu) Learned from her grandfather, she made 1-kyu in 2003. Manages Female Shogi Professional Club official website and its blog. Born in Saitama.
Hatsumi Ueda (Current Female Title Holder: Queen) After becoming professional at age 12 in 2001, she steadily gained experience and obtained 3-dan after making a straight-win at Mainabi Female Open in 2011. Qualified as a full-time member of Japan Shogi Association at the same time. In 2012, she became a defending champion.

[email protected] 152 年前の 1860 年 6 月、ワシントンで批准 を済ませた遺米使節団はフィラデルフィア を訪れ、そのうちの８人が伝統あるフィラ デルフィア・チェス・クラブに招待され、 日本の将棋を披露した。場所はオールドシ ティにある Athenaeum（1845 年建造の古文 書図書館で当時のチェス・クラブの拠点） で、現在も古書の匂いが立ちこめるアセネ ウムの二階には、チェスルームと呼ばれる 小部屋があり、当時使われていたチェステ ーブルがそのまま残されている。 当時の記事には羽織袴に刀を携えた山田馬 次郎と佐野鼎という二人が将棋を指して見 せた様子や、盤や駒、将棋特有のルールや チェスとの比較、そしてその場の和気藹々 とした雰囲気などが興味深く書かれてい る。また、将棋のことが“SHOGI”ではな く "Sho-ho-ye" と表記されていた。 これがおそらく、海外で指された記録に残 る最初の将棋だろうと言われている。 この度、日本のプロ棋士 5 名が、152 年前 の行われた将棋とチェスの出会いを再現す べくフィラデルフィアを訪れることになっ た。それに先立ち、ウエルカムレセプショ ン・ネットワーキングイベントを開催す る。フィラデルフィアに 5 人のプロ棋士が 訪れるのは、史上初である。 レセプションではプロ棋士代表として、伊 藤果師匠に 6 世紀に日本に伝わり、12 世紀 に確立した将棋の魅力などを紹介してもら う。また、将棋紹介を元全米将棋チャンピ オンの Alan Baker(Associate Professor, Swarthmore College)が行う。 Maido からの日本茶 と Genji のお寿司をつ まみながら、プロ棋士との交流をお楽しみ 下さい。

伊藤果 (七段) 京都府出身。小学 5 年生の頃父に教えられ将棋を始める。1966 年 に初段、1975 年にプロ入り。1981 年度 第 12 回新人王戦 準優 勝、第 31 回 NHK 杯 準優勝。1995 年に七段昇段。1999 年 6 月 3 日 通算 400 勝、現役勤続 25 年表彰。2011 年に引退。詰将棋作家とし ても知られ、書籍、ゲームソフト等の著作がある。

及川拓馬 (四段)
伊藤果門下、埼玉県出身。父に教えられ 5 歳で将棋を始める。1998 年に奨励会入り。2004 年三段昇段、2007 年にプロ入り。2008 年初 参加の竜王ランキング戦 6 組準決勝で勝利し、プロ入りから最短で 6 組を抜ける。第 57 期（2009 年度）王座戦で、挑戦者決定トーナ メントに進出。深浦康市王位（当時）に勝ち、ベスト 8。
伊藤明日香
(初段)
伊藤果門下、東京都出身。7 歳で母に教えられ将棋を始める。師匠 の伊藤果は実父であり、将棋界初の父娘でのプロ。2005 年に女流 王将戦本戦入りを果たし、女流 1 級に昇級。2005 年 6 月から 2007 年 5 月、および 2008 年 5 月から 2009 年 3 月まで女流棋士会の役員 を務める。2009 年引退。
野田澤彩乃
(1 級)
伊藤果門下、埼玉県出身。祖父の影響で将棋を始める。1997 年女 流育成会入会。2003 年女流 1 級。 日本将棋連盟女流棋士会公式サイト、および女流棋士会 Blog の運 営を手がける。
上田初美
(女王)
伊藤果門下、東京都出身。2001 年に 12 歳で女流棋士となる。2003 年女流初段、2008 年に女流二段に昇段。2011 年、連勝して迎えた 第 4 期マイナビ女子オープン五番勝負第 3 局で甲斐智美女王に勝 ち、ストレート勝ちで初タイトル「女王」を獲得。同日付で女流三 段へ昇段し、日本将棋連盟正会員資格を得る。2012 年、第 5 期マ イナビ女子オープン五番勝負を制して「女王」防衛。
