A few Words from IIMSAM`s Adviser-Director of the IIMSAM/KKEO Spirulina Nutritional Programme in Kisumu, Kenya. Mrs. Els Wijt-Mulder
Excellencies, IIMSAM Stakeholders, and Prospective Donors: I am grateful to my Director General Ambassador Remigio Maradona for giving me the opportunity as a physically challenged person (Amputee of both legs due to an accident) to work with IIMSAM in prioritising the need to continue the Kisumu, Kenya Spirulina Nutritional Programme, to help physically challenged orphans/children, with housing, feeding, medical care, education etc. Today we have 20 children in our “IIMSAM/KKEO Family Home”; most of them are severely physically challenged and malnourished orphans totalling around 100. Still there are a lot of physically challenged and malnourished children who are living on the streets or are hidden in the villages. Having physically challenged children is not accepted in Kenya. As far as we know, the IIMSAM/KKEO Programme is the only one taking care of these children in Nyanza Province and possibly in whole Kenya. IIMSAM aims to make our programme self-sustainable, the cultivation of Spirulina (natural food supplement) as the first in Kenya. Today we are proud that we have a daily production which is enough for daily doses of 100 HIV/AIDS infected adults or 200 HIV/AIDS infected children or 500 malnourished children but far from enough for all the malnutrition children and people living with HIV/AIDS in Kenya.
It is our dream to spread the knowledge of Spirulina cultivation, also called “the food of the future”, throughout Kenya and the rest of East Africa. Spirulina has an enormous positive effect on the quality of life of HIV/AIDS patients, can save the lives of millions of children suffering from malnutrition. It can also create jobs and be an important source of income for poor families and women groups.
For the moment we are living all together (children, staff and myself) in a rented house on a quarter of an acre plot. Our facility is more than full. We have 140 m2 of Spirulina basins and with that also our garden is more than full and the production capacity is not enough to become self-sustainable. Therefore we need urgently a better and bigger accommodation to create an“IIMSAM Spirulina Sports and Education Centre”, to not only expand the facilities and the Spirulina production but to offer the clientele a variety of sports for recreation with an educational component. We located already an ideal property near Kisumu Airport, but we simply do not have the financial resources. IIMSAM/KKEO Spirulina Programme has obtained recognition letters from the Ministry of Heath, Agriculture and Home affairs of Nyanza Province. IIMSAM/KKEO is to create 3 Spirulina Education Centres/Family Homes (max. 30 children) in Nyanza Province (HIV/AIDS affected/infected people over 15 %) within one year with in total 5000 m2 Spirulina cultivation. With that quantity of Spirulina, IIMSAM/KKEO Spirulina Programme would be self-sustainable, same case scenario can be duplicated throughout Kenya, Africa and worldwide.
Thus far the IIMSAM/KKEO programme operates strictly from private donations from private Dutch citizens in the Netherlands from which I am from. I have also financed the whole Project with my own income. IIMSAM needs further help to continue our activities, which are responding to: THE 8 UN MILLENNIUM GOALS.

This plot is situated 25 kms. outside Kisumu on the border of Lake Victoria, 10 kms from the main road to Nairobi. We can lease or get the plot of the Ministry of Fisheries for a long period. The following are the planned projects we wish to do on this plot:1. 10 Ha project for our needy handicapped children: 1.1 Family Home for internal handicapped children (Orphans) 1.2 Children’s hospital to cater for other needs and physiotherapy/orthopedic activities 1.3 Montessori School (for able and disabled children) 1.4 Adapted garden for exercises and wheelchair farming, also Spirulina 1.5 Therapeutic swimming pool that would suite our situation 1.6 Learning centre for teaching parents/guardians to cope with needy Children. 2. 10 Ha Training centre – mainly to teach Agriculture/Veterinary and other scientific production activities 2.1 Spirulina cultivation will be the biggest part 2.2 Cereals farming 2.3 Horticulture 2.4 Banana planting 2.5 Rice growing 2.6 Pigs rearing 2.7 Poultry farming 2.8 Fish ponds 2.9 Cattle/Dairy farming + making cheese, yoghurt, butter etc.
2.10 Production of biogas and furniture from water hyacinth 2.11 3 seminar classrooms + Guesthouse. 3. 80 Ha will be used by the organization to produce farm products for Self-sufficiency. 4. 100 Ha will be leased on short term to individual community members who prove their competence after training? Some of the IIMSAM/KKEO Spirulina basins IIMSAM/KKEO disabled children are helping with harvesting IIMSAM/KKEO Harvesting recently operated Disabled Kid, George. IIMSAM/KKEO last seminar. Several of them started already their own project IIMSAM/KKEO Spirulina Orientation Seminar. It is in view of the above we urgently need your help: • In the wet season we can only come there with a 4-wheel drive car. That is Our first and most urgent need. For the moment we don’t have any car. • The construction of 2000 m2 Spirulina basins to start with. (Materials) • The construction of 3 seminar classrooms + Guesthouse. Spirulina Project is doing very well. The demand is a lot higher than we can produce now (160 m2). We have a partnership with Maseno University, Kisumu and the Ministry of Fisheries asked us for partnership (aquaculture). We are following the business plan of Antenna Geneva. 1/3 for the poorest, 1/3 for food programs and 1/3 for the open wellness market. We did start now to make Spirulina capsules and Spirulina tablets for the last mentioned group. With the profit of our Spirulina project we want to finance our entire project for the physically challenged children, to become completely selfsupporting. Also all our children will find their future jobs in our Spirulina Project. Due to the recent political turmoil in Kenya this year, there are more severely malnourished children than ever, many children lost their parents and many people lost their jobs and in the very near future Kenya expect a big shortage of food.
The IIMSAM/KKEO Spirulina Programme can save many lives. We want to spread the Spirulina cultivation a.s.a.p. not only in Kenya but also in Uganda and Tanzania.

Mr. Peter K. Rono, IIMSAM’s Goodwill Ambassador from Kenya is a Gold Medalist of the 1500 meter event in the 1988 Seoul Olympics. His experience and leadership skills as an athlete, coach, team organizer, and entrepreneur have given him great insights in areas such as personal management, conflict resolution, team building, quick decision making and problem solving that have special relevance for developing countries. His aura and leadership skills continue to inspire and affect the lives of his colleagues and peers in a positive way. He put his skills to practice by planning and launching a fast food restaurant in Kapsabet , Kenya . H.E. Kono has experience as a track and field consultant at the Kamabo Training Camp in Kapssabet, Kenya and later became the assistant track and field coach at Mount St. Mary's College that went on to win the Men's and Women's Northeast Conference Championship in 1997 and 1998. H.E. Rono was the head coach of the International Olympic Committee HighAltitude Training Camp for Distance Runners from 1999-2000 that produced eight Olympians from seven countries at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. His honors and achievements included being inducted into the College Sports Hall of Fame appointed by the International Olympic Committee to conduct clinics for elite junior athletes in Britain, Germany, and Israel. In 1995 he was conferred an honor by the Pope John Paul II at the Vatican where he gave a globally televised speech on behalf of Catholic athletes worldwide, and on winning the Gold Metal in the 1500 meters, 1988 Seoul Olympic games.

BACKGROUND OF “KISUMU KIDS EMPOWERMENT ORGANIZATION”: MRS. ELS WIJT-MULDER FOUNDED KISUMU KIDS EMPOWERMENT ORGANIZATION in 2005. It embarked on its activities from the year 2006 and secured its official registration as an NGO in March 2007 (see attachment). The organisation is operating from a rented residential quarter of an acre plot in Kisumu - Tom Mboya estate, which also serves as the residence of the director. It accommodates 20 needy children and has 138 m2 of Spirulina Basins. All the activities of KKEO are unique in Nyanza Province, possibly even in the whole country. THE MAIN OBJECTIVE: The main objective of the organization is to provide care and protection to the needy, physically and mentally challenged children/orphans, by
coming up with a framework on strategies or interventions towards their Health and Educational needs alongside Economic empowerment. THE ACTIVITIES OF THE ORGANIZATION: 1. Taking care of physically and mentally challenged children/orphans. 2. Cultivating and producing Spirulina 3. Water purification by the production of Chlorine 1. Taking care of physically and mentally challenged children: The organisation takes care of the needy, physically and mentally challenged children, most of who are abandoned orphaned, at times with no trace of other family members. KKEO most of times houses twenty children (max. capacity). The organization has so far helped about 100 needy children. Most of who were brought in by: • • • • •

2. Spirulina Project: This is an ideal community based project that can be implemented all over the country for purposes of providing the much needed Spirulina food nutrients. Spirulina improves the health status of individuals besides boosting their income levels. The project was started in May 2006 with minor difficulties but was set up on a serious note in Jan 2007. The organisation acquired a full time expert (an agricultural Eng specialised in Algae) in Jan 2008. The Spirulina project therefore forms the backbone of the main economic activity of KKEO, and it is intended to contribute towards making the organisation self-sustainable.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT; 1. Referral and Spirulina cultivation learning Centres with sufficient capacity to accommodate maximum 30 handicapped children and the internal KKEO staff. 2. Physiotherapy- Rehabilitation- and Orthopaedic Workshop (Orthopaedic Workshop only in the head office) unit, complete with equipment.
3. Conference facility for the seminars and training on Spirulina cultivation. 4. Spirulina Project administration unit and Laboratory 5. Basins for the cultivation of Spirulina., for training, local use and production for self-sustainability. GENERAL OBJECTIVES; 1. To identify the poor, vulnerable and the handicapped children from poor families. 2. To rehabilitate, educate and take care of the handicapped children’s general health care. 3. To train the targeted in the cultivation of Spirulina as an income generating activity. 4. To offer hope by building the handicapped children’s capacity to participate in income generating activities through KKEO. 5. To fight malnutrition and give quality of life to HIV/AIDS patients through the use of Spirulina 6. To fight poverty through the use and cultivation of Spirulina. SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES FOR THE HANDICAPPED CHILDREN AND CHILDREN WITH MARASMUS AND KWASHIORKOR: 1. Rehabilitation and taking care of the handicapped children and giving them jobs within activities of Spirulina Project. 2. Treatment with Spirulina for the children with Marasmus and Kwashiorkor. 3. Specialized basic education for the children with special needs. 4. Giving professional skills in production and new techniques of water purification by producing Chlorine. 5. Impart skills in the cultivation of Spirulina . SPIRULINA PROGRAM: 1. Combat malnutrition and contribute towards boosting the general community health by the use of Spirulina products. 2. Combat poverty through the advocacy of Spirulina Cultivation as a cost effective economic activity. 3. Plough back the proceeds from Spirulina to finance the activities of KKEO. 4. Introduce the cultivation of Spirulina into the Kenyan economy as an income generating activity, especially for small farmers and women groups. 5. Partner with other individuals and organizations in the production and propagation on the use of Spirulina.
JUSTIFICATION OF THE PROJECT: HIV/AIDS is highly prevalent in Nyanza and has highly contributed to the existence of most orphaned children. It also contributes to the poverty levels of the affected and infected. The resultant deterioration in income therefore makes it difficult for the guardians to continue fulfilling the children’s basic needs. More of such children are often hidden and/or abandoned by their poor guardians or parents due to their disabilities. Such children are therefore highly vulnerable and prone to malnutrition since the poverty stricken families neglect them. The Spirulina Project will provide the answer by contributing towards job creation and eradication of malnutrition and giving back the quality of life to these people who are suffering from HIV/AIDS. FAMILY HOME: The wish to admit more children in the family home located in Tom Mboya – Kisumu has of late been unfulfilled due to the limited space to accommodate all KKEO activities. As a result, we have more often declined to take in additional children. Similarly we have been forced to refer back some of the children to their original guardians or parents, thus making it difficult for a follow up to establish any improvement in the life of the affected. We are currently housing 20 children in the rental premise (home), though with acute limitation of facilities. The demand to admit more needy children is however still on the rise. We therefore as an organization cannot positively respond to or meet the requirement due to the above stated problem.
SHORT TERM -PHASE 1: 01/10/2008 We have since identified an ideal property in Kisumu, with some suitable existing constructions. The semi-developed property has two houses together with some structures, all within a perimeter wall and secures steel gates. With minimal facelifts and some constructions, it can easily transform into the Spirulina Training Centre and the Family Home that we currently require. The property lies in a 1.2 acre (approximately 5000 m2) piece of land and is located near the Kisumu Airport. This property will be the headquarters of KKEO
This centre will have 1000 m2 basins of Spirulina to facilitate the training activities and production for self-sustainability. A maximum of 30 challenged children will be housed in the centre. There will be a Physiotherapy, Orthopaedic Workshop and Nursing unit to rehabilitate the children. To create jobs for a total of 28 people at the first Training Centre/Family Home as we focus on implementing a community based Marketing strategy based on our Sales Philosophy of 1/3 to the poor, a 1/ 3 to the food programs and a 1/3 to the financially endowed. Thus Individuals, Women and Youth groups will earn an income through the cultivation and sale of Spirulina and its products. To realize the projected initial goals of the pilot project, 5000 m2 Spirulina is required to make the organization completely selfsustainable so as to give us the capability to expand our projects to other parts of Nyanza then countrywide. We shall implant our second and third Spirulina Education Centres/Family houses in Ugenya an Oyugis.
PHASE 2 MEDIUM TERM OBJECTIVE 01/02/2009 2000M2 SPIRULINA PROJECT FOR UGENYA AND UYUGIS WITH FAMILY HOME FOR 30 CHILDREN. We intend to expand the Spirulina project in Nyanza to help fight malnutrition and improve the health status of its population. This will also help in generating jobs and help improve the economic status of its communities. Our medium term objective is focused on Ugenya. We got a 1-acre plot as a donation in Ugenya. Where we want to construct our “STANDARD Family homes and Spirulina Training Centre” The last term objective is focused on Uyugis.
