Welcome to

Richmond’s First Baptist Church Established 1780

As children of the Heavenly Father, and with the help of the Holy Spirit, we believe that we have been called to labor alongside the Lord Jesus in the joyful work of bringing heaven to earth. First Baptist Church relates to the River City Faith Network, the Baptist General Association of Virginia and the Baptist World Alliance, and supports missionaries through the Southern Baptist Convention and the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship.

An Invitation The people of Richmond’s First Baptist Church invite you to commit your life to Christ as His disciple and to join our congregation as a member. We receive members 1) upon profession of faith in Christ followed by believer’s baptism; 2) by transfer of membership from another Christian church; or 3) by statement of previous Christian experience. The process begins when you respond to the invitation at the conclusion of a worship service by coming forward to request membership. It continues through a conversation with one of our pastors, a new member orientation luncheon (offered every other month), and a vote by the congregation at a quarterly business meeting.

• A Service of Prayer for Healing takes place today at 5:00 p.m. in the Chapel. This monthly service of prayer, worship, music and scripture is a quiet time to talk with God. The speaker is Sandra Stevens. Dr. Roberta Damon will lead a grief counseling group at 3:30 p.m. in the Library for anyone who is walking through the journey of loss. • We invite everyone interested in a 2018 First Baptist mission trip to attend an informational meeting today, February 11 or February 18 in the McDaniel Room immediately following the 11:00 a.m. worship service. FOURTH SUNDAY AFTER THE EP I PH A N Y

Preparation for Worship As we make our way through Mark’s gospel we are confronted again and again by the word “immediately.” But maybe that’s appropriate in this season, because that’s how epiphanies seem to happen. It’s not,“Wait a few minutes. Let me pack my bag.” No— epiphanies just happen. No preparation. No packing list. No recommendations of what to take, what to do. And so, Jesus just happens. On the shores of the Sea of Galilee. No time to think. No invitation to take your time. Just go. This is how epiphanies happen, Mark says. They are untamable and unpredictable. Unexpected and even undeserved. But maybe we knew this already… —Karoline Lewis

Call to Worship (from Psalm 111, NRSV)

Steve Booth

Leader: Praise the Lord! I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart, in the company of the upright, in the congregation. People: He has gained renown by his wonderful deeds; the Lord is gracious and merciful. Leader: The works of his hands are faithful and just; all his precepts are trustworthy. People: They are established forever and ever, to be performed with faithfulness and uprightness. Leader: He sent redemption to his people; he has commanded his covenant forever. Holy and awesome is his name. People: The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all those who practice it have a good understanding. His praise endures forever.

The worship services at Richmond’s First Baptist Church are planned around the weekly readings from The Revised Common Lectionary. This biblically based approach to worship can be strengthened and enhanced by the awareness and preparation of our church family as we ready ourselves to meet God and each other in worship each week.
