Respiration Relay
Objective: Students will explain the process of respiration.
Explanation: The heart is the muscle that pumps blood with oxygen in it throughout the body. The blood acts like a little delivery truck which drops off oxygen to where it is needed and then picks up carbon dioxide and delivers it back to the lungs where it can be exchanged for more oxygen. This process is called respiration.
Equipment: • Mats • Cones • Scooters
Directions:
1. Divide the class into equal groups of four. 2. Two students are at the starting cone which represents the lungs. 3. The other two students are stationed at a mat on the other side of the gym. The mat represents a muscle. 4. The students at the cone (lungs) have a scooter. The scooter represents a red blood cell. 5. On the signal go the one student on the mat begins performing sit-ups while the other student holds his feet. At the same time, one student from the cone (lungs) sits on the scooter (red blood cell) and pushes himself/herself to the mat (muscle). This student represents oxygen being transported to the muscle. 6. When the student (oxygen) on the scooter (red blood cell) reaches the mat (muscle), an exchange occurs. The student who performed the sit-ups is now carbon dioxide and must be transported back to the lungs by the scooter (red blood cell). The new oxygen enters the muscle and holds the feet of the other student, who is performing sit-ups keeping that muscle active. 7. When the student (carbon dioxide) on the scooter (red blood cell) returns to the cone (lungs) another exchange is made for fresh oxygen. 8. This process continues until each group has performed one hundred sit-ups. 9. Students should be able to see that the most efficient group delivering fresh oxygen to the muscle is the most likely to be the first group to one hundred sit-ups.
Respiration Relay (continued) Assessment: Lead class discussion using these questions. 1. Where does the blood get oxygen from? 2. Do the muscles need oxygen? Why? 3. What does the blood take back from working muscles to the lungs? 4. How can the muscles get more work done? Scooters Cones Students Exercise Mats
