Soil Salinity and Aggressivity Assessment ‘Woorong Park’ – Stoney Creek Road Marsden Park, 2765
1.0 INTRODUCTION 1.1
General
DLA Environmental Services (DLA) was engaged by J Wyndham Prince on behalf of Winten Property Group (Winten) to conduct Salinity and Aggressivity Assessment of the property located at ‘Woorong Park’ Stoney Creek Road, Marsden Park (the Site). Woorong Park consists of an area of approximately 472 ha and is comprised of Lot 4 DP1078187, Lot 5 DP 10787187, Lot 7 DP 1078187, Lot 8 DP 1078187, Lot 9 DP 1078187 and Lot 10 1178982. The Site is currently falls under a combination of zoning as detailed in the NSW State Environmental Planning Policy (Sydney Regional Growth Centres) 2006, North West Growth Centre Land Zoning Map – Sheet LZN_002, portions the Site is planned for redevelopment as residential lots, parts of the site will be retained for riparian and or open spaces. Refer to Figure 1 – Site Location and Figure 1a North West Growth Centre Land Zoning Map – Sheet LZN 002 The assessment was undertaken for the natural soils located on-site, primarily consisting Light Medium Loamy Clay soils. DLA conducted A Detailed assessment of the Site in May 2015, report titled: DL3492_S00906_DSI_Woorong Park Marsden Park_R01.1. This report has reviewed the specific site circumstances and chemical properties of representative soils including the soil type, geology, topography and chemical analysis for salinity. Sulphate, chloride and pH were reviewed relating to aggressivity of the Site soils. Salinity refers to the presence of salt in the environment and occurs when salts which are naturally found in soil or groundwater mobilise, allowing capillary rise and evaporation to concentrate the salt at the upper subsurface soil profile. Such movements are caused by changes in the natural water cycle. In urban areas, the process which cause salinity are intensified by the increased volumes of water added to the natural system from the irrigation of gardens, lawns, parks or from the increased retention of water thereby raising the water table due to clearing of trees, vegetation and from leaking infrastructure (e.g. water supply pipes, sewers, storm water etc).

Soil Salinity and Aggressivity Assessment ‘Woorong Park’ – Stoney Creek Road Marsden Park, 2765
Salinity can cause damage to buildings and houses by the deterioration of bricks, mortar and concrete when salt drawn up into capillaries of bricks and mortar causes them to expand and results in spalling. The following damage can also occur due to chemical interactions related to salinity and aggressivity:
-
Deterioration of concrete kerbs and gutters as a result of chemical reactions between concrete and sulphates;
-
High chloride content in the soil may result in corrosion of steel reinforcement and buried metal structures;
-
Damage to underground pipes and infrastructures;
-
Water logging of ground surface due to the sealing effect of sodic and dispersive soil; and,
-
Loss of vegetation cover and osmotic availability due to high salt content resulting in retardation of plants growth.
Strategies for minimising risk for construction in saline and aggressive areas and building standards are described in Building in a Saline Environment 2nd Edition 2008 by the NSW DECCW.
1.2
Past Investigations
Salinity Potential in Western Sydney According to the DIPNR (2002) ‘Salinity Potential in Western Sydney’ map, the Study Area encompasses zones of ‘known salinity’, ‘high salinity potential’ and ‘moderate salinity potential’. DLA have assessed the site and made the following observations: -
High salinity potential exists along the unnamed creeks running through the centre of the Site. These are the areas where soil, geology, topography and groundwater conditions predispose a site to salinity. These conditions are similar to the areas of Known salinity. These areas are more common in lower slopes and drainage systems where water accumulation is high; and,
-
Moderate salinity potential in the rest of the site in areas on Wianamatta Group Shales and Tertiary Alluvial Terraces. Scattered areas of scalding and indicator vegetation have been noted but no concentrations have been mapped.

Geotechnique Pty Ltd – Proposed Residential Subdivision Development Marsden Park Precinct – North West Growth Centre Richmond Road, Marsden Park. Land Capability, Salinity and Contamination Assessment Report (Report No 12576/1-AA) 27 February 2012. Geotechnique Pty Ltd (Geotechnique) undertook a preliminary assessment which incorporated the site as part of the wider Marsden Park Precinct. This assessment gave a preliminary assessment of the Sites Soil Salinity and Aggressivity Salinity potential issues. The report states the following finding:
-
Soil testing revealed that the topsoil is generally non-saline and that underlying alluvium soils are generally slightly saline, grading to moderately saline at depths generally greater than 1m. Very saline to highly saline soils were encountered at various locations;
-
The soils are non-aggressive to iron/steel and low aggressive to concrete; and,
-
The soils across the site are highly sodic and susceptible to erosion. A soil salinity management plan should be implemented for site works.

Site Geology and Soils
The Geological Survey of NSW 1:100,000 Sydney Geological Map (Sheet 9130) shows that the Site is underlain by tertiary period Londonderry Clay which consists of clay with patches of ferruginized sand. Some of the western parts of the site are underlain by Rickaby’s Creek gravel. The site is characterised by the presence of two soil landscape groups South Creek and Berkshire Park. Soils generally to the west of the creek central to the site consist of South Creek landscape group however they also locally occur east of the creek centre and south of the Site. Soils in the east and south east of the site generally consist of Berkshire Park landscape group. The natural soils encountered during the investigation predominantly comprised silty sand and sandy / silty clay. Some gravely sands and large cobbles were present at the surface and within the shallow subsurface soils in particular within the south creek landscape profile areas. A review of the Acid Sulfate Soil risk maps available on the EPA NSW Natural Resources Atlas shows that the Site is located in an area that is not expected to be affected by Acid Sulfate Soils (ASS).

2.4
Site Topography
The site has undulating gradual slopes and rises of up to 30 m. Overall the site slopes towards South Creek and Stoney Creek Road to the north west and west of the site. The elevation of the site ranges from 12 m (North West) to 31 m AHD (West).
2.5
Site Hydrology and Hydrogeology
A search of the Department of Primary Industries Office of Water groundwater works database was also performed to identify wells in the vicinity of the Site. The search results did not identify any wells located within 500m of the Site. A previous groundwater monitoring well installed during the preliminary assessment conducted by Geotechnique could not be located during the fieldwork. The depth to groundwater encountered during the three groundwater monitoring well installation works by DLA was measured to be between 6 m and 8 m below ground surface (bgs). The depth to ground water measured during groundwater sampling events was between 1.1 m and 4.7 m below top of casing (btoc). It is considered that due to hydrological pressure, standing water levels measured during sampling are not representative of actual groundwater depth. Groundwater encountered during drilling works is considered to be more representative of actual groundwater depth. The groundwater flow direction at the Site is expected to be to the North West in alignment with the natural hill slope contour and toward South Creek which flows along the western boundary of the Site. The local receiving environment in South Creek and the regional receiving environment is expected to be the Nepean River, located approximately 9km to the north west of the Site. Portions of the site in particular the western low-lying portions of the site are identified as being flood prone land.

3.0 SOIL SALINITY AND AGGRESSIVITY CRITERIA The guidelines for the Salinity assessment are outlined in Department of Land and Water Conservation – ‘Site Investigation for Urban Salinity 2002’ and Department of Conservation and Land Management ‘A Guide for the Interpretation of Soil Test Results 1992’. The number of samples and analysis are based upon the guidelines for Site Investigations for Urban Salinity (DLWC 2002) and Western Sydney Salinity Code of Practice (WSROC 2003). Residential areas (1:10000 scale) require a minimum of one sample per two Ha, equalling to a minimum of four samples for the Site residential area of 472 Ha. Samples were targeted for previously mapped and identified areas. Due to the number and frequency of samples analysed by Geotechnique Pty Ltd, twenty eight samples were considered appropriate for determining the Sites salinity, for the proposed development and to verify of the Sites previous finding. Samples were representative of the upper 3m of the Site and targeted to the areas prone to the presence of salinity. See Figure 2 - Site Layout with Sample Locations
3.1
Salinity
The criterion for assessing soil salinity is based on electrical conductivity (EC). The test conducted on a soil sample for salinity is generally made up of 1:5 soil water suspension, which is one part air dried soil to five parts distilled water. The determined EC is multiplied by a factor (varying from 6 to 17) based on the texture of the soil sample, to obtain Corrected Electrical Conductivity designated as ECe, as outlined in the OEH (Office of the Environment & Heritage) publication, “Site Investigations for Urban Salinity - 2002” and is shown in Table 3a below:. 3.2
Sodicity
Sodic soils are dispersible and are vulnerable to erosion and tunnelling. Sodicity is measured by Exchangeable Sodium Percentage (ESP) and Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC). As soil salinity is a function of soil stability and structure, parameters such as CEC and ESP and Sulphate must be considered to provide a holistic understanding of potential degradation. In addition to the above, the presence of sulphate, chloride and moderately acidic soils has the potential to cause high soil aggressivity to concrete and steel structures; particularly if the structures are in direct contact with the soil. The following sulphate, chloride measure of soil aggressivity are based on the criteria outlined in the Australian Standard, AS 2159-1995 “Piling – Design and Installation’” 1995. Soil Salinity and Aggressivity Assessment ‘Woorong Park’ – Stoney Creek Road Marsden Park, 2765
4.0 RESULTS The sample locations of this Soil Salinity and Aggressivity Assessment are representative of areas with the potential for the presence of Saline soils, i.e. soils in the proximity of the drainage channels, creeks, and dams. However, due to the identification of aboriginal heritages sites, generally located in the vicinity of the creek areas in the centre of the Site, consideration was taken on the location of the sampling points as access to certain locations were restricted. The guidelines for the assessment are outlined in Department of Land and Water Conservation – ‘Site Investigation for Urban Salinity 2002’ and Department of Conservation and Land Management ‘A Guide for the Interpretation of Soil Test Results 1992’. Twenty eight samples were collected from across the Site, from the approximate range of depths of 0.2m to 3.0m and were analysed for salinity and aggressivity parameters. The majority of the samples analysed were taken from at least 1.0m depth. Refer to Figure 2 – Site Layout with Sample Locations The electrical conductivity (EC) soil results from all samples taken, recorded as <2 ECe (dS/m) result indicates the soils are assessed as Non Saline as shown in Table 4a – Electrical Conductivity Detection Results (Salinity). Exchangeable Sodium Percentage (ESP) analysis ranged from non-sodic to highly sodic. Two samples were Non Sodic, eleven samples were Sodic and nineteen samples were highly Sodic. The Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC) soil samples ranged very Low (CEC) to high, four samples had a very low CEC, thirteen samples had a low CEC, thirteen samples had Moderate CEC and two samples had a high CEC. As detailed in Table 4b – Results for Soil Sodicity and Cation Exchange Capacity. The Chloride in soils results from all samples taken, recorded a <5000 ppm Chloride result indicating the soils analysed to be Non-Aggressive to Steel. The Sulphate in soils results from all samples taken, recorded a <5000 SO3 (mg/kg) sulphate result indicating the soils analysed to be non-aggressive towards concrete. The pH levels of between 4.6 and 7.9 are moderately acidic to neutral, therefore are non-aggressive to steel and concrete. A single sample reported a pH of 4.8, mildly aggressive to concrete. Ref Table 4c – Results for Soil Aggressivity.

Soil Salinity and Aggressivity Assessment ‘Woorong Park’ – Stoney Creek Road Marsden Park, 2765
5.0 DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS Previous findings of the Geotechnique report establish that the topsoil is generally non-saline and that underlying alluvium soils are generally slightly saline, grading to moderately saline at depths generally greater than 1m below ground level (bgl). The Geotechnique report encountered very saline to highly saline soils at various locations consistent with the mapped areas. The Geotechnique report also states that the soils are non-aggressive to iron/steel, but shows low aggressivity to concrete, and that soils across the site are highly sodic and susceptible to erosion. In addition to the finding of the Geotechnique report, according to the DIPNR (2002) ‘Salinity Potential in Western Sydney’ map, the Site encompasses zones of ‘known salinity’, ‘high salinity potential’ and ‘moderate salinity potential’. Laboratory testing indicated that all sampled soils were non-saline. The soil sample results range from non-sodic to highly sodic, indicating the soils on-site have some potential for erodability of soils if left exposed. The Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC) was very low to moderate, thereby indicating site soils are relatively stable in the presence of water. The Sulphate and Chlorides concentrations were nonaggressive towards concrete and non-aggressive towards steel in all soils. The pH levels of between 4.6 and 7.9 are moderately acidic to neutral, therefore are non-aggressive to steel/iron. A number of samples reported a pH between 4.5-5-5 indicating a mild aggressiveness to concrete. The results in general confirm the finding of the Geotechnique report in regards to the upper 3m of the subsurface, it is noted that the Geotechnique report conducted samples at depths greater than 3m bgl from which the result varied from slightly saline to highly saline at depths of up to 8m. These finding are to be taken in consideration if earth works proceed to a depth greater than 3m bgl. It is concluded that there is a low potential for salinity impacts on Site in the proximity of the drainage channels, creeks, and water dam at depths approximately 2m bgl – 3m bgl.
In this regards
consideration to the guidelines in Building in Saline Environment 2008, and Western Sydney Salinity Code of Practice 2003, is advised. The pH values indicate some soils may have a mild aggressiveness towards concrete and therefore consideration should be given to the design of the structures in contact with the soils in accordance with Standard, AS 2159-1995 ‘Piling – Design and Installation’ 1995. As the soils across the site, ranged from non-sodic to highly sodic thus indicating a susceptible to erosion. A soil salinity management plan should be implemented for site works.
