Stratified Epithelia

Stratified Epithelial Tissues

•  Contain two or more layers of cells •  Regenerate from below •  Major role is protection •  Are named according to the shape of cells at apical layer

Stratified Squamous Epithelium

Stratified Squamous Epithelium Specific types

•  Many layers of cells: Squamous in shape •  Deeper cell layers appear cuboidal or columnar •  Thickest epithelial tissue •  What is the primary function of this epithelium? •  Is this epithelium is a portion of mucus membrane? Where does mucus come from?

5

Stratified Squamous Epithelium

•  Keratinized – contain the protein keratin •  Surface cells are dead and full of keratin •  Non-keratinized – forms moist lining of body openings

6

Stratified Squamous Epithelium

Function – Protects underlying tissues in areas subject to abrasion Location •  Keratinized – forms epidermis •  Non-keratinized – forms lining of esophagus, mouth, and vagina

7

Stratified Cuboidal Epithelium

Stratified Cuboidal Epithelium

Description – Generally two layers of cubedshaped cells Function – Protection Location •  Forms largest duct of sweating glands •  Forms ducts of mammary and salivary glands

9

Stratified Columnar Epithelium

Stratified Columnar Epithelium

Description – Several layers. Basal cells usually cuboidal and superficial cells are elongated. Function – Protection and secretion Location •  Rear tissue types •  Found in male urethra and large ducts of some glands 11

3

Transitional Epithelium

Transitional Epithelium

Description – Basal cells usually cuboidal or columnar and superficial cells usually domeshaped or squamous. Multi layered. Function – Stretches and distention Location •  Uterus, Urinary bladder and part of Urethra

Given the previous examples (consider the morphology only)

What kind of tissue does this represent? Simple squamous epithelial tissue

Can you name? First, the tissue type Second, where in the body the tissue is found

Where in the body would you find this tissue? lungs

4

What kind of tissue does this represent? Simple squamous epithelial tissue (superior view)

What kind of tissue does this represent? Simple cuboidal epithelial tissue

Where in the body would you find this tissue? Kidneys (tubules) The lining of the kidney glomerulus (sing.)/glomeruli (pl.) is simple squamous epithelial tissue

What kind of tissue does this represent? Simple columnar epithelial tissue

What kind of tissue does this represent? Pseudostratified (ciliated) columnar epithelial tissue false layered ; it looks like more than one layer, but it is not

Where in the body would you find this tissue? small intestine

Where in the body would you find this tissue? trachea lining

5

What kind of tissue does this represent? Stratified squamous epithelial tissue

Where in the body would you find this tissue? mouth lining

What kind of tissue does this represent? Stratified columnar epithelial tissue

Where in the body would you find this tissue? male reproductive tract

What kind of tissue does this represent? Stratified cuboidal epithelial tissue

Where in the body would you find this tissue? salivary glands, sweat glands

What kind of tissue does this represent? Transitional epithelial tissue

Where in the body would you find this tissue? empty bladder

6

What kind of tissue does this represent? Transitional epithelial tissue

Where in the body would you find this tissue? distended (full) bladder

Example

Location

Shape (form)

Function

Transitional epithelium

Bladder

Layer with no specific shape, Cells can stretch

Allow bladder to stretch as it fills

Simple squamous

Lungs, blood vessels

Flat and thin layer

Increase flow and absorption rate through tubes

Stratified squamous

Skin, esophagus, mouth cervix

Several layers of thin flat cells

Provide protection from abrasions

Simple columnar

Digestive tract

One cell layer of rectangular cells mixed with goblet (mucous – producing) cells

Aid in digestion with mucous production
