THE MAGNA CARTA SCHOOL

Welcome to The Magna Carta School Enclosed are a number of items which may help you to settle into the school. We do not envisage that you will be able to read all of this on your arrival, but if you have a question or there is an incident during the day, you may be able to find some information in here to help you. (Please ensure you read the Fire Evacuations Procedure contained in this booklet on arrival)

Assembly point is behind the GYM (please check map enclosed).  A cover slip will be given to you on arrival  Login to Sims and messenger using the login information at the front of this book  Any problems during lessons contact a member of SLT via messenger (names are listed in this book)  If you have any queries or questions always ask a member of staff for help.

Fire Evacuation procedure One long continuous bell signals a fire alarm. Students need to be evacuated and registered quickly, quietly and safely within 9 minutes of the alarm sounding.       

     

On hearing a continuously ringing bell you should leave the building by the nearest available exit. When teaching you are responsible for making sure that the whole class leaves the room quietly and quickly. Students must leave all bags, coats and belongings. Shut the door behind you, DO NOT LOCK. Escort the group to the fire assembly point (see map) using the most direct exit, students should then line up in their designated tutor groups. Tutors to ensure that your group line up in alphabetical order, quietly and quickly. If a tutor is absent then it is the responsibility of the second staff member allotted to the tutor group for fire drills to take the register. SUPPLY STAFF If you are covering for a permanent member of staff and if you are allocated a tutor group then you will need to register that group. If you are not allocated a tutor group then please register with the Finance Manager. House Pastoral Lead to collect all registers from the Attendance Officer to distribute to tutor groups. It is essential registers are completed as quickly as possible and hand back to House Pastoral Lead. House Pastoral Lead to hand registers back to the Attendance Officer promptly. If you are allotted to a tutor group you must report to the tutor for staff registration. If you are not allotted to a tutor group then please report to the Finance Manager at the staff collection point shown on the map below. Designated Fire Marshals will alert you to any changes in assembly due to fire location Stay with your allotted tutor group or in the staff collection point until the all clear is given by the Designated Assistant Head. Never re-enter the building, any concern to be reported to House Pastoral Lead (House Pastoral Lead pass concerns on to Designated Assistant Head / the Site Manager / the Health & Safety Officer, see map for contact point)

Dismissal procedure The Designated Assistant Head will advise of dismissal:   

Staff currently teaching will be dismissed prior to any students. At this time if you are not allotted to a tutor group please help staff with crowd control Students will dismissed in the order and direction shown on the Fire Drill Map Please report any problems with the fire drill evacuation to the Health & Safety Officer

Lockdown Emergency Return to Class Should we need to return students to class early during lunch/break:    

Safeguarding Children at The Magna Carta School This school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. This means that we have a Child Protection Policy and procedures in place which we refer to on our website. All staff (including supply staff, volunteers and governors) must ensure that they are aware of these procedures. Parents and carers are welcome to read the Policy on request. Sometimes we may need to share information and work in partnership with other agencies when there are concerns about a child’s welfare. We will ensure that our concerns about our students are discussed with his/her parents/carers first unless we have reason to believe that such a move would be contrary to the child’s welfare. Our Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSLs) are:  DSL  Deputy DSL  Pastoral Manager  Headteacher’s secretary

If you are concerned about a child’s welfare, please report the issue in person to one of the DSLs as soon as possible the same day and email: [email protected] You must make a record of your concern, and any observations or conversations heard. Do NOT conduct your own investigation. If your concerns relate to the actions or behaviour of a member of staff (which could suggest that s/he is unsuitable to work with children) then you should report this to a senior member of staff in confidence, who will refer the matter to the Head teacher (or the Chair of Governors if the concern relates to the Head teacher) who will consider what action to take.

The Magna Carta School Learning Objectives

In line with our Teaching and Learning Policy, as teachers we need to make our learning objectives explicit to students. To help us to do so there are some laminated sheets with ‘Today’s Learning Objectives are….’ And ‘Key Words’ on, stuck to every whiteboard, so that students and teacher have a visual reminder of what they will be learning in that lesson. Please make full use of these sheets.

GENERAL RULES FOR CONDUCT OF STUDENTS AROUND SCHOOL 

  

   

 

Blazers should be worn at all times around the school unless otherwise directed in the Summer term. Students may ask to take their blazer off if they are hot in a lesson, but they must leave the class with their blazer on. The only top which may be worn under the blazer is a black, ‘V’ neck sweater. Hooded tops must not be worn at all. Students must wear sensible black shoes. Students may only wear trainers in exceptional circumstances (i.e. injured foot) and this must be supported with a letter from home. Long term problem will require an official medical letter. Coats can be worn but taken off as soon as students enter the classroom. Students should be encouraged to wear winter coats (preferably waterproof and dark blue or black). Students should be well presented at all times, please ask them to tuck shirts in and do ties up. The badge/TMCS on the tie should be showing. Jewellery should not be excessive. Necklaces should be tucked inside shirts. One ring may be worn and one pair of studs only in the lower lobe only. Please ask students to take any additional jewellery off. Persistent offenders may have jewellery confiscated, which should then be sent to their tutor or the main office. Students are not allowed nail varnish or nail extensions. Students may use mobile devises with headphones at break and lunchtimes, but must not have them on during lesson time or in the school building. If they use them in your lesson confiscate them and give to the front office for collection. Students are allowed to drink water in class. Food and other drink should not be consumed in classrooms or corridors. Chewing gum is not allowed in school. If you catch a student chewing, please ensure they place the gum in a bin. Persistent offenders may be given detention. Students should go to the toilet during breaks and should have no reason to go during lesson time. If there is a medical condition students will have a note in their planner, allowing them to go to the main office or Learning Support. Likewise, any student leaving your lesson, to go to the office or library for example, must have a signed planner. Students should always keep to the left when moving around the school to avoid accidents and hotspot crushes. If you catch a student smoking take them to the Inclusion Room to the Pastoral Manager. You may detain a student for 10 minutes at the end of the day without notice. Any longer requires written notification with 24 hrs notice. The detention should be written in the planner. If students do not have a planner, write a detention on paper and give to them. It is advisable to contact parents to try and resolve issues and prevent the behaviour being repeated. Detentions of more than 10 minutes should not be set at break or lunchtime. If setting a break or lunch time detention, please avoid getting students to stand outside the staffroom as this can cause a number of problems. Staff set homework on ‘Show My Homework’ - encourage students to look daily.

The planner is the main form of communication between the home and school. Please ensure this is signed at home and that tutors sign this on a weekly basis!

SUCCESSFUL COVER LESSONS The following are some strategies for ensuring a cover lesson goes well. In addition, there is an explanation of relevant procedures within the school, should there be any problems. Strategies for a successful cover lesson:     

 

Get there early if you can so that you can set the tone as the students arrive. Invite students to come in, sit down, take any coats off, get their books out and put their bags on the floor, so ready to start the lesson. Ask students at the start of the lesson to put their planners out on the desk. This way you can check their names and write any comments in when you wish without having to ask them only if a problem arises. Also, ask any students who are on report if you can have their report cards. Set the work. Put it on the board if possible. It’s a good idea to get hold of your own white board marker as not all teachers leave one in their room. Be careful if the whiteboard is an Interactive one as you can only use certain pens on these. Set your standards. For example, o Students work in silence o ‘I don’t mind quiet chat if you are still working. If the noise level gets too loud I will warn you. 3 warnings and we work in silence for 10 mins…’ Take a register. Log on to SIMS and e-register if unable to do so, pass paper round for students to sign in and send to office. Circulate the room to check that the work is being done. If continuing with a draft, for example, put a mark in the margin and set a target for students to get to where you feel appropriate. i.e. by the end of the lesson you need to have finished this page.

Management of Student behaviour (To be read in conjunction with the Management of Student Behaviour Policy). 



Always avoid confrontational situations. There are a number of strategies you can employ: Know the rewards/sanctions available to you (see below). check you know their name, by looking at the planner. Catch them being good! A few words of praise can go a long way. You could share good work with others “look at what Joe has done, this is the right idea. Well done”. You can award Vivo points for good work via Heads of Subject. You can also note this in their books with a short explanation of why you are giving the Vivo points. Just ensure that you initial that you have issued this. When behaviour does not meet your expectations, there are a number of things that you can do: Write their name on the board. 3 warnings maximum.

Ask them to wait outside to calm down – never confront a student in front of others it backs them in to a corner and they often won’t back down. Don’t leave them outside the class for too long. When convenient to you, go out and reiterate your expectations and let them know why, in your opinion, they are not meeting them. You can move them, but don’t make too big an issue of it or blame just one person. Say “you’re not a good influence on each other”. If a student needs to be removed from a lesson use the Faculty support or on call timetable displayed in all Faculty rooms. Students can be kept in for a break or lunch time detention with notice on that day or for a maximum of 10minutes at the end of the day. If you have difficulty doing that, then see the HOD or HOF. You can set a 30 minute after school detention. Write this in their planner and inform the Teacher whose lesson you have covered or the HOD. Ensure that you give at least 24 hours notice. Many departments have a detention night, so check with the HOD when that is. Detentions should be written in the planner, explaining when, how long for and for what reason the detention is being given and signed by you. e.g.: 29/01/03 45mins PE detention for poor behaviour. Reports/Incidents Students who are on Report should give you their red report card at the beginning of the lesson. It is their responsibility to do so, but it may be a good idea to ask at the start of the lesson if anyone needs to hand you one. The targets are clearly stated on one side of the card with the method for scoring. If you have a problem with a student in your lesson, please complete a behaviour report on Sims.

Planner Guide All students in the school should have a planner on them. It is a good idea to ask students to always put their planners on the desk at the start of the lesson in case you need them and also because you will then know their names and their tutor group. Any student who does not have a planner should collect a temporary planner from their tutor. Do not send students out of lesson to collect these, but try to pick some up at the start of the day/week so you have some on you. Students record all homework on ‘Show My Homework’, but you can also write a note to their tutor, the Head of Department or Parents if you feel necessary. For example, a comment about how well they have worked. If you need to write a detention into planners then this can be done in either the comment section or on the day (see Successful Cover lessons - Management of Student behaviour guidelines). Students can be awarded Vivos for a range of positive behaviours - see online for more information.
