Selected Horticulture Info September 2009 In this section we resume articles published in major sector reviews to describe the most important facts commented in the European market and give focus to information on products and markets, market trends, market requirements, industry and technology news, statistics, rules and regulations, sector events.

Asia Fruit Logistica More than 200 companies from over 30 different countries and as many as 3,500 visitors were expected at Asia Fruit Logistica on 2-4 September. The three-day trade fair took place in Hong Kong alongside Asiafruit Congress, Asia's premier conference event for the international fresh produce business. Exhibitors attended from all the leading markets in Asia, such as China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines as well as from the key supplying countries such as the US, Australia, New Zealand, Chile, France, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, South Africa, Argentina, Peru and Brazil. The excellent prospects for market development coupled with Asia Fruit Logistica’s focus on the fresh produce sector make the exhibition the obvious destination for anyone wanting to market fresh fruits and vegetables in Asia: established and new companies alike are making the trade show

the centre of their marketing activities in the region. Key trading nations such as the US, Australia, China and the Netherlands have increased their presence this year, while others such as Brazil and Chile - both major exporters of fresh produce –exhibited for the first time. Exhibitor numbers have grown strongly since the launch of the event three years ago because of the growing interest in the Asian market and the high quality of trade visitors that attend the three-day fair. Over 80 per cent of trade visitors hold leading management positions in their companies, with 92 per cent involved in purchasing and procurement. Asia Fruit Logistica takes place alongside the Asiafruit Congress which has been held annually in Asia for more than 10 years; the three-day conference and networking event brought together leading international speakers and expert panellists from across the region. The EU market for counter season French beans With European imports approaching an annual 200.000 tons, French beans display strong growth. EU imports have increased threefold in a decade and are still increasing. In 2008, Morocco was still by far the leading extra-European supplier of green beans with a market share of more than 61% .With a 10% increase in exports, it increased its domination a little more in comparison with 2007, when it already accounted for 58% of European imports.

This increase in market share seems to have been at the expense of Egyptian exports, which dropped 3% from 14% to only 11%. The situation remained unchanged for Kenya and Senegal with 19% and 3% respectively, in spite of a slight increase in Kenyan exports (2%) in comparison with 2007. When production and export periods are tending to lengthen for Maghreb sources, the export periods tend to be shorter for sub-

Saharan sources, and in particular Senegal and Burkina Faso. Indeed, shipments are starting later and later and are often interrupted prematurely because of quality concerns, as was the case again this year.

The four markets France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Italy show the pattern of flows throughout the counter-season for green beans.

France First and foremost, this market seeks highquality filet beans for which operators are sometimes ready to pay a high price. In contrast, there is very little room for intermediate quality beans that will soon be downgraded and considered as poor quality, especially when market conditions are difficult. During the last season, the four major sources (Senegal, Burkina Faso, Kenya and Morocco) shipped filet beans to the French market on a fairly regular basis. The 2008-09 season was fairly mediocre overall. Several quality problems such as dry batches lacking fresh silky texture affected supplies from all sources. Remembering the results of preceding seasons, operators delayed the arrival of larger volumes of beans until after Christmas. Kenya is still the absolute reference on the market for very fine filet beans. Once again, the amounts shipped were not very large and quality problems, such as rust, were observed. But it is still the standard against which beans from all the other sources on the market are measured. The prices of Kenyan beans were fairly stable as usual, with the average fluctuating between EUR 3.35 and 3.90 per kg according to period and availability. The withdrawal of some Senegalese operators - especially those trading filet beans - permitted the return of Burkina Faso. Unfortunately, the quality of the batches was very uneven throughout the season.

Generally well traded and sorted, filet beans from Burkina Faso suffered from a very rapid change in quality: the batches received were often unrecognisable only two days after being released on the market. With prices running at between EUR 2.35 and 3.35 per kg depending on the period of the season, produce from Burkina Faso was not really able to profit from the small supplies from Kenya or the irregular shipments of filet beans from Senegal. Some operators had to reduce their imports during the season because the quality of the produce was too uneven. Very hot weather caused the season to come to a quick end for the batches from Burkina Faso. As in previous seasons, sales of filet beans from Senegal were a little dependent on the availability on the market of batches of Senegalese beans imported by air and by sea, with no distinction made concerning the type of transport. Price differences could therefore range from EUR 1.50 to 2.00 per kg! Supply from Morocco was also very disturbed during the counter-season period. Heavy rainfall in the production zones affected the quality of the produce which deteriorated rapidly after picking. French market outlets for Bobby beans are smaller than those for filet beans. A fair proportion of the volumes received is re-exported to other markets. Demand for Bobby was poor overall this year and it was not possible to sell large volumes.

Belgium Growth in the market and increased interest in the market for high-quality air-freighted produce which are better priced, compared to those shipped by sea, has been observed over the last two seasons. The quality of the first beans shipped from Senegal by air was not good: the batches that arrived during the first two weeks of the season were dry and lacked a silky texture. The beans from Egypt, which are grown under glass, displayed more

regular quality and immediately gained a better position on the market. Cheaper and more attractive as regards quality, they found a clientele fairly quickly. In contrast with previous years, the start of the Senegalese season did not result in the end of Egyptian exports. These continued as they were better appreciated for their regularity by a proportion of consumers. 7

Market News Service Tropical and Off-Season Fresh Fruits and Vegetables

The Netherlands To date, Holland has been the reference market for Bobby beans as operators have successfully segmented the air market and the sea market. The situation was reversed in the last season. After taking practically all Senegalese Bobby bean production, the Dutch market slowed. Some people think that this was caused by the economic downturn and falling demand from other markets. Regardless, the slowed growth affected prices and Senegalese exports. The French

beans season started in earnest with the arrival of the first containers. The re-export demand was also smaller and Senegalese operators were frequently obliged to redirect their produce to other markets. The market took smaller volumes during the last season and this resulted in Senegalese exporters reappraising their market segmentation objectives. Several operators who had abandoned filet beans seem to have decided to focus on this again.

Italy This market is mainly interested in bobby beans. Senegal lost a significant market share, especially at the beginning of the season. Made cautious by quality problems experienced in recent seasons, operators waited as long as possible before taking delivery of the first batches from Senegal. Thus, although this source is generally highly esteemed for the quality of the produce shipped, it came on to the market very late. The presence of poor quality Moroccan batches available at all prices and that of produce from Egypt meant that importing

beans from Senegal was not of any interest. However, with the decrease in volumes from Morocco and the more pronounced deterioration of their quality, batches from Senegal arrived under better conditions. In contrast with preceding seasons, their arrival did not block the other sources. Egypt, where quality has improved distinctly, was an alternative on several occasions. For reasons of concern about quality, batches of produce shipped by air from Senegal soon arrived to complement the goods arriving by sea.

Tanzania: $2 Million Project to Help Farmers Get the Fruit of Their Labours A project funded by the international financial organisation Common Fund for Commodities (CFC) is boosting smallholders in Tanzania and helping them grow mangoes for export to the fresh produce markets of the EU. CFC headquarters is putting up $1.9 million and a further loan provision of $2 millions organised through the African Development Bank and the Industrial Development Corporation of South Africa (IDCSA). The major focus with the out-grower scheme is fresh fruit for export, but the IDCSA is providing the loan element for industrial plants, so that the fruit that does not make the grade for fresh exports can be processed. Tanzania will soon commercialise its subsistence fruit farming for export to multinational supermarkets. To prepare for

this, small scale farmers will study international and regional markets to facilitate contracts with superstores like Safeway Morrison, Sainsbury, Marks and Spencer, Tesco, and Woolworths (SA). They will learn consumer preferences and gain better understanding of the operational laws. The establishment of tropical fruit production is a step towards commercialisation of agricultural in Tanzania. Farmers are expected to earn $30 from each mango tree a year. The $2 million project will begin this season. It will strengthen the capacity of small-scale farmers and help them produce vegetables and fruits for export. Infrastructure will be enhanced to help them meet the strict export requirements. More than 600 farmers in Coast Region (Pwani), Zanzibar and

Tabora will be benefit. They will have access to funds to develop and pilot horticultural outgrower schemes for the export, mainly to East Africa.

exported. The majority of fruits are for domestic and regional consumption and the sector is poorly organised; the quality is very good, but it is not standardised.

The managing director of the Common Fund for Commodities, said in Dar es Salaam, that the project will focus on yellow passion, low fibre mango and vegetables produced with modern technologies, improved planting material and better farming methods. Its aim is also to increase the number of players in tropical fruit agriculture in a 'win-win' context. Out-growers and small-scale farmers will take part in a highly dynamic international business, giving them better returns. The main market is Europe. Many tropical fruits are cultivated but only a small percentage is

The project will identify the markets while outgrower farmers will design their own cropping programme to match the demand. Other hurdles that the programme will address include poor quality of produce, small hectarage under production, limited technical know-how and lack of proper infrastructure -pack houses, water sources for irrigation, transport and cooling systems. UK’s NFU supports African charity: The Cassava project The National Farmers' Union in the UK and charity FARM-Africa have chosen a fledging cassava project to receive cash from their Africa 100 Appeal. With funds reaching almost £200,000, one final push is being sought from the agriculture and horticulture industry in the UK before a cheque is handed over to the charity in October. The Cassava Project, operated by FARMAfrica, was launched in the wake of droughts and the resulting poor availability of food in Kenya. It aims to increase productivity on subsistence farms across the east-African country and put an end to food insecurity for thousands of families.

The year-long fundraising appeal, launched as part of the NFU’s centenary celebrations, has seen charity cycle-rides, golf days and generous donation from industry supporters raising a phenomenal amount of cash. The appeal started in July 2008 when farmers were enduring the expense of a long, wet summer, which has been closely followed by a global, economic downturn and the resulting recession. However, the farming industry has pulled out all steps to support Africa 100. Source: Fresh Produce Journal
