Unit 4: Transition – Preparation for Post-16 (C1, C2, C3, C4) LEARNING INTENTIONS By the end of this unit pupils will have had the opportunity to: • review, list and record personal skills, qualities and achievements; • review steps necessary for career planning; • identify methods of recruitment and selection; • develop a personal career plan based on relevant information and guidance; • identify and select relevant information to complete recruitment documentation (application form/CV); • develop interview skills; • experience the world of work first hand; and • identify opportunities for Lifelong Learning. Visit from a Careers Advisor to highlight post-16 options and discuss recruitment and selection methods.

Businesses need to recruit new workers for several reasons: • The business has grown • To bring in people who have skills they need • To replace employees who have left because of retirement, resignation, promotion or dismissal. This is the process whereby the employer chooses the new employee from the list of applicants who have applied for the position. METHODS OF SELECTION Application form A form which applicants complete, making it easy for applicants to be compared Curriculum VItae A list of all the applicants’ qualifications, experience and achievements Interviews Employers meet applicants and ask questions to judge how suitable they would be in that particular job Testing e.g. for an Office Clerk position, the applicant may be asked to perform a typing speed test Presentation Where the applicant may be given an area to discuss for a set period of time Responsibilities of the employers and employees in the selection process: HONESTY e.g. the employer must present accurate and clear information in the job advertisement; the employee must provide honest information with regard to qualifications and experience OBJECTIVITY the employer has a responsibility to find the best person regardless of any other consideration e.g. religion FAIRNESS the same conditions must be applied to each applicant – e.g. the same time allocated, the same questions asked CONFIDENTIALITY both employee and employer must treat information learned about each other as strictly confidential.

5 How you look You never get a second chance to make a first impression. Activity Sheet 4(i) How You look Look at the pictures and discuss: • Who are they? • Where are they going? • Where do they work? • What job do they do? • Is their dress code suitable for the work they do?

1 Circle of Truth Pupils sit in a circle, teacher asks them to: Move if you - have blue eyes - are 1st born - are wearing black shoes - have brushed your teeth - are wearing earrings - like pizza …. etc Discuss – The interviewer can see the colour of your hair or shoes and that you look neat and tidy. Can they tell, just by looking at you that you are hard working or if you are an honest person? You need to tell the interviewer a bit about yourself.

Going for interview how should you look? Discuss: • Neat and tidy • Clothes • Hair, nails, shoes etc. 6 Interview Do’s and Don’ts Activity Sheet 4(j) Interview Do’s and Don’ts Read the case studies. Pupils list the Do’s and Don’ts. Discuss: • Arrival time • Nerves – how to relax • Handshake • Eye contact • Voice • Body language.

2 Qualities Activity Sheet 4(f) Qualities Cards What are employers looking for in their workers? Pupils sit in a circle. Place the ‘Qualities’ face down in the centre. Pupils select one and discuss. Consider how they can prove to an employer they are honest, helpful etc. (they need evidence or examples).

Using role play the teacher acts out a bad then a good interview - discuss. Pupils in turn, act out a good interview scenario (whole class or in pairs). 8 Mock Interviews Arrange for an employer to host the Mock Interviews.

Unit 4: Transition – Preparation for Post-16 (C1, C2, C3, C4) TEACHER BRIEFING SHEET STRESS IN THE WORKPLACE Class discussion to identify examples of stress at home or in school e.g. pressure to get grades, pressure to get homework or classwork completed on time. This information sheet may be used to further develop teacher-led discussion. What is stress? Work related stress has been described as the adverse reaction people have to excessive pressure or other types of demand placed on them. Symptoms • headaches • muscular tension • backache and/or neckache • tiredness and sleep problems • digestive problems • a raised heart rate • skin rashes • sweating • blurred vision

Causes • poor working conditions • long working hours • poor relationships with colleagues • lack of job security • inflexible working hours • too much or too little responsibility

Reduce stress by • getting active • playing sport • reading a book • listening to music • going for a walk
