Project Amp Site Spotlight Project Amp is excited to launch its first two sites this fall. One of the sites, Marietta High School (MHS), opened their Student Success Center on October 22, 2015. We will be working closely with the Center to screen students and deliver Project Amp. Below is a glimpse from the press release about the Center. MARIETTA, GA- On October 22nd, 2015, Marietta City Schools (MCS) in Marietta, Georgia opened a brand new Graduate Marietta Student Success Center. At this new center, students are supported beyond the classroom and prepared for post high school success through an innovative approach. Students receive guidance through the following support centers in an overall culture of hope and achievement: 1. Academic Support, including college and career services 2. therapeutic services provided through community partnerships Leigh Colburn will transition from her former role as MHS Principal, where she has served for over a decade, to serve as Director of the new Graduate Student Success Center. “My passion is student success. It is my true desire to make a difference in their lives by instilling hope and providing resources throughout their path to graduation…This is an incredible opportunity to stay connected and extend my efforts to both the high school and the broader Marietta community.” – Leigh Colburn Through consolidation of services and support of significant privatepublic partnerships, MCS aims to see improvement in the following areas: graduation rate, discipline referrals, college acceptances, transiency, student sustainability, and scholarships earned.
Project Amp Reflects on National Substance Abuse Prevention Month Last month, President Obama called on every person to join the collective efforts of parents, youth, schools and community leaders and “recommit to fostering a culture where all our people can live up to their fullest potential.” National Substance Abuse Prevention Month aims to ensure access to supports and resources needed to help prevent substance abuse so youth can live healthy, happy and productive lives. As the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) Director Michael Botticelli stated, “When community partners work together, they are a powerful force in creating positive and healthy environments. We need all voices, including those of young people, to create meaningful change. This year, let us focus our efforts on engaging parents, youth, communities, and schools.” Project Amp is honored to continue these efforts by engaging a broad range of prevention, treatment, and recovery stakeholders. Project Amp's design calls for community collaboration and seeks to strengthen capacity to prevent problem substance use. Project Amp's brief mentoring intervention utilizes an SBIRT framework to screen youth (13-17 years old) who are at low to moderate risk of substance use and connect them with young adult mentors with lived experience of recovery. Mentors draw upon their own experiences of achieving resiliency and wellness to guide youth participants through the intervention and provide them with the tools they need to make healthy decisions and to have a successful, healthy future.
