Bits Loup Garou

The Loup Garou is now ready to kick off the 2018 Mardi Gras in the Mountains with his ritual demise by fire for the final time. The Wolfman of swamp legend was constructed January 31 at Capo’s Restaurant by volunteers and Krewe members. The creature was the work of Carrie Venezia and Wes Black of Voodoo Krewe. The Wild Tchoupitoulas will return in 2019.

World Heritage International Student Exchange Program is seeking representatives to work with volunteer host families and international exchange students in your community. World Heritage provides academic year and semester exchange programs in the United States for high school students from around the world. Students are 15 to 18 years of age, have passed a series of academic and character requirements and are awaiting an opportunity to embark on their American adventure. Suzann Long-time Red River resident Suzann Arvila, passed away on January 25 after a long difficult battle with dementia. Suzann had moved to Wasilla, AK in 2006, where she and her husband Larry Arvila had built a beautiful log home. Larry preceded Suzann in death on January 3, 2017 due to chronic COPD and Multiple Myeloma. Suzann and her daughter Sabrena moved to Red River in 1976 and built a log home in the Upper Valley. Many might remember Suzann as a ski instructor for kids at Powder Puff Magic Mountain, or as a waitress at The Homestead Steakhouse. Suzann is survived by her daughter Sabrena Trego (Greg) of Cheyenne, WY; Paula Bishop (Rory) of Sauharita, AZ; Dan Dickerson (Rita) of Leavenworth, WA. She had nine grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the children are requesting donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in Suzann’s name.

Carolyn Baños: Rex 2018!

“Our Mardi Gras party is not just about getting your tourist dollar: it’s about showing our guests a good time!” –Carolyn Rex, MG 2018 She is the Captain of the Pirate Krewe and is the elected Rex, overseeing the Red River Mardi Gras in the Mountains 2018! Carolyn Baños is the owner of Old Tymer’s Cafe and Big Horn Sports & Rentals with husband Robert Baños. She has been an active participant in Mardi Gras for 20 years and she loves every minute! “I was flabbergasted when I was chosen Rex! It’s such an honor!” Carolyn says it was a man and a job that brought her to Red River for the first time in 1998. From Chandler, OK, she came to work at The Cheaper Skier, a ski shop which was located in Lifts West and in the Sitzmark Sports building. “I moved here for a summer and I’ve been here ever since!” She had learned to ski in Colorado in Breckenridge and Aspen but “I didn’t even realize that New Mexico had any sking.” She confesses that her first winter, 1998, saw little snow and she thought Robert had “hoodwinked” her. The next winter, though, was good and she was glad that she stayed. Following two years at The Cheaper Skier, there was one short year in Ft. Collins, CO but she and Robert realized it wasn’t their kind of place after a few months. They liked the small town atmosphere of Red River, the friendliness and familiar family feel. The couple moved back for the winter of 2001. “What do the Pirates do? We do whatever we want: we’re Pirates!” The Pirate Krewe Ball is held on Fat Tuesday and will be a fundraiser for Stray Hearts Animal Shelter of Taos County. The

Among the serious Fat Tuesday revelers - the number of Mardi Gras celebrants is growing as we speak - there is but one thing and one thing only that makes their Mardi Gras a true success: Beads! Yes, the acquisition of beads, beads and more glorious beads becomes a quest, a sense of purpose that drives revelers to a near frenzy! Brightly colored, flashy, gaudy, occasionally tacky, cheap plastic and wonderful! How many really cool beads can you accumulate before midnight Tuesday? In my 27 years of celebrating Carne Vale at the Mardi Gras in the Mountains I have accumulated, amassed, bargained, bought, collected, compiled, gained, gathered, hoarded, procured, stockpiled, stored, traded and just flat wound up with an amazing heap of baubles of the Mardi Gras nature. Years ago I made a connection between my Mardi Gras neck and back pains and the constant wearing of beads, before and during the best winter party anywhere. A friend of mine and co-conspirator/co-founder of the UnKrewe

who also owned the Black Crow Coffee House noticed the same problem with her neck and back. Since she had a scale in the coffee house, a brilliant idea arose and resulted in the weighing of beads. I had over 50 pounds and Nancy had nearly the same amount! No wonder our necks hurt. Now I wear the beads in shifts, changing the arrangement a minimum of three times a day. Long ago and far away the beads were made of stones, shells and porcelain, trade beads which played an important role in world commerce. Coin of the realm, these were especially popular in the port cities of the Caribbean and along the Gulf of Mexico. During the 1930s and ‘40s, glass beads became popular, handed but never tossed to eager parade goers. Following WWII, the age of plastic gave us the modern fanciful creations that we’ve come to pursue during the

mayhem and noisy frivolity of Carne Vale. With the age of tiny, tiny batteries the blinky beads, lighted beads that blink off and on, change colors and patterns and spin wildly about, became all the rage for the amusement of Mardi Gras revelers. These techno age products welcomed the 21st Century with colorful abandon! Blinkies rule! The parades and bead tosses are a simple way to get beads. During the nightly Grand Balls beads are tossed wildly into the air for eager party goers. As for the Main Street Parades, thousands and thousands of beads are thrown from the floats by costumed maskers who want everyone to get in on the fun of The Beads. If you are riding the chairlifts at the Red River Ski & Summer Area, don’t be alarmed by the beads in the trees. Like Pee-wee Herman says: “We meant to do that!”

Forest Huval recently received his Masters Degree from Louisiana State University in Entomology, doing field work in Peru and Costa Rica, and is preparing to start work on his Doctorate. From deep in the heart of Acadiana, he will be in Red River this week for the 27th Mardi Gras In The Mountains, along with the Bon Temps band surrounding him every night for some genuine Cajun/Zydeco music, as well as maybe some rockin’ and rollin’ tossed in the musical gumbo! Forest recently was awarded the honor of Best First Album presented to him by the Cajun French Music Association, an award that is most satisfying for him. “A lot of my favorite accordion players have won that award. It’s good to be associated with those names.” The award-winning album is called… Forest Huval (what else?). Forest looks forward to spending Mardi Gras in New Mexico and especially looks forward to skiing Red River. “Man, I love it up there,” he said in a phone interview from his home in Cecilia LA. “People in Louisiana ask me ‘It’s Mardi Gras: why you leavin’ town?’ “I tell them ‘You got no idea where I’m goin’ for Mardi Gras! It’s a great time in Red River!’ That’s all I can tell ‘em! If you’re thinkin’ about going to Mardi Gras in the Mountains, do it!” The group kicks off the Mardi Gras festivities on Thursday at the Motherlode, immediately following the Burning of the Loup Garou.

ROAST LEG OF LAMB INGREDIENTS FOR LAMB:

1 leg of spring lamb, about 6 lbs 1 tsp salt 2 tsp seasoned salt 1 Tbsp paprika ½ tsp ground ginger ½ tsp dry mustard 1 tsp dried oregano 1 tsp pepper Stuffed olives

“We always deceive ourselves twice about the people we love – first to their advantage, then to their disadvantage.” –Albert Camus

4 Tbsp freshly squeezed lime juice 2 cloves garlic, crushed ½ tsp salt ½ tsp dried marjoram 3 or 4 dashes Tabasco

DIRECTIONS: Trim excess fat from lamb. Mix all other ingredients, except olives, and rub thoroughly onto meat on all sides. Prepare Marinade... combine all ingredients and mix. Gouge holes about ¾ inch deep all over top of lamb by inserting a sharp, small paring knife, twisting and removing some meat... like coring an apple. Into each hole put a little of the marinade. Insert an olive on top, like a stopper. Roast uncovered at 350 degrees for 3 hours, or until tender, basting with remaining marinade and adding small amounts of hot water as needed. Remove lamb to platter, skim fat off juices. Thicken juices a little and use as gravy. Any questions? Contact me at: [email protected]

“We waste time looking for the perfect lover instead of creating the perfect love.” –Tom Robbins “We are not the same persons this year as last; nor are those we love. It is a happy chance if we, changing, continue to love a changed person.” –W. Somerset Maugham “The best cure for unrequited love: get to know them better.” –Alain de Botton I like to think of February, with Valentine’s Day right there in the middle, as the Month of Love. Seems to me it isn’t much good for anything else. Without Valentine’s Day, February would be just one very long dreary day. But, with L 0 V E – call me an incurable romantic, as some have, but I see it as Love Encircles. Love Supports. Love Prevails. Someone has said, “Wherever a beautiful soul has been there are a trail of beautiful memories.” Nowhere is that more true than in Red River, New Mexico, high up in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Red River does attract some very strange persons, it’s true, but it has also attracted some of the most beautiful souls in the uni-

verse. Let me name a few of them for you -it does my soul good to do this, so bear with me. Winnie Hamilton, Florence Oldham (Winnie’s sister), Walter Hamilton (Winnie’s husband). They lived together in harmony and a love that was filled with the lightness of being – and laughter, always laughter – at Tall Pine Resort up the Red River Valley. Three of the most joyful people I’ve ever been privileged to meet. When we went out to their resort in 1975 to introduce ourselves, and get to know what the rest of the Red River-ites had assured us were “the geologists, the botanists, the history-lovers,” they greeted us as if we were returning cousins. I turned to my husband and whispered, “We’re home.” I have often felt that Winnie, Walter and Florence invented love and joy and harmony. They blended into their atmosphere as if they had been here as long as these mountains and valleys and streams. They loved this place with a devotion as deep as their love for one another – and the rest of their family – and my family, too. They had a deep intelligence I found intriguing, and a childlike view that was enchanting. ( “Childlike” – not to be confused with “childish.”) There was a kindness in them. In hearing of some of the goingson in the town proper, they would say, “Hmm, interesting.” I never heard them speak unkindly of another human being. It was like living among a bunch of saints! I like to think it rubbed off on all of my family members, particularly my six grandchildren whom we were privileged to raise right here in Red River. They were sublime storytellers and they regaled us with stories of their growing up years in Raton and on the mesa, the uncles and the gold mining

days, Red River’s unique history, without actually living in the past. They were always very forward thinking. Always musing on what Red River would become next year or the years after that. I think of them this Valentine’s Day, with love, and every day – and with awe of a universe that caused us to stumble in here during a spring blizzard, all the way from Wisconsin, to come back in June and stay – 42 years later ... Red River is a very special place. And it’s the people who love it with a fierce dedication that make it even more special to anyone who finds it. I hope there will always be Winnies and Florences and Walters to greet newcomers, as there were for my family and me. This column is dedicated to Sue and Burke Burns, summer residents, a retired school teacher and her husband-artist extraordinary, who know all about love and joy and laughter. Till Next Time

Call Chelsea at 575-224-2897 ____________________ Over dinner at the Italian place, where they’d had their first date. Emily was radiantly beautiful in her yellow dress, which set off her outstanding cheekbones better than a Hollywood camera. They took a small table off to one side and ordered a bottle of wine. “Emily,” he said, “I have to ask you something.” “Yes, Honey?” “Will you …” As he leaned forward, so did his glass of wine, and her glass of wine, and the table. He helped her up and saw the damage to her dress and she asked to go home and change. What right would he have to ask her to stomach a lifetime of his little fatalities? He’d have to think about that.

Dewey reached up to straighten his tie and stuck a finger up a nostril by mistake. Here he was, on the most momentous evening of his life and he couldn’t do one little thing right. Tie a tie. Every 9-year-old boy getting ready for church could do it, but not Dewey. He cussed his awkwardness and inability to do anything short of causing a disaster. How many guys are there who could actually put a black baldy cow in a treetop? Just him. No … Dewey, our pharaoh of fertilizer because he could shovel it into a pickup without killing himself, was uniquely qualified in the clumsy department. But he smiled as he thought of how he and Emily first shared a kiss because Dewey had tripped on a tree root and fell on her, and how they had been fastened together on the ground by a fishing fly Marvin had tied for him to aid in his pursuit of the lady with the lovely cheekbones. Stonefly nymph on a number six. Dewey had taken two showers this evening to expunge any lingering “product” and had a corsage all ready. Tonight’s the night. Yes, tonight he was going to pop the question. Tonight.
