Science: KS4 Extension Homework Please log on using your Kerboodle password and complete the WebQuest activities as detailed below. You will find these in your resources area. When completed please bring your finished work along to room 16 so that it can be assessed for a commendation. 1.5 WebQuest: How Science Works: Earthquake disaster WebQuest. A How Science Works activity in which students research various apects of earthquake disasters and their managment. 1.6 WebQuest: Our changing planet WebQuest. Students gain an understanding of the important role of the atmosphere in keeping temperatures on Earth stable and warm enough to support life. It also helps them consider the debate around issues of climate change. 2.9 WebQuest: Food nutrients and their function WebQuest. An activity that focuses on students working to explore the characteristics of a healthy diet and develop an understanding of the role various nutrients have in maintaining a healthy body. 2.10 WebQuest: Body mass index (BMI) WebQuest. An activity to write an article for a health magazine using research on how BMI is calculated and what the BMI value might suggest about a person's general state of health and to look at the controversy around BMI calculations and decide whether or not they are a reliable indicator of health. 5.4 WebQuest: Breathalyser WebQuest. An activity to produce an information leaflet from research on how a breathalyser works and on how alcohol is broken down by the body and how these changes are detected by breathalysers, and and to discuss changes in the use of breathalysers. 5.11, 5.12 WebQuest: Forensic science techniques WebQuest. An activity to make a presentation from research on how crime scene samples are analysed and how this analysis is used to link suspects to crime scenes. 6.4, 6.5 WebQuest: Cystic fibrosis WebQuest. Students are asked to create a factsheet using information from web sources explaining what cystic fibrosis is. 10.5 WebQuest: Smoking timeline WebQuest. Students use the internet to research and gather information about the harmful effects of smoking and the laws regarding smoking. They then have to place the information on a timeline to see how the views on smoking and the law have changed over the years. 12.4 WebQuest: How Science Works: Sportswear WebQuest. A How Science Works activity in which students research various smart materials used in the manufacture of sportswear for different sports.

Students research the use of IVF and pre-implantation genetic diagnosis to write an article for the local newspaper outlining the issues and giving their opinion with reasons. Students research the decline of the honeybee population in Britain, identifying the origin and extent of the problems as well as the prognosis, future consequences and remedial strategies. The main part of the task involves finding out about nanotechnology and then deciding which possible function is the one students think is the best idea to be developed. C2 4.6 WebQuest: Catalytic nanoparticles WebQuest. Students do initial research to find out what is meant by the term'catalyst'. They then extend their search to find out information about nanoparticles. C2 5.6 WebQuest: Extracting aluminium WebQuest. Research activity in which students learn about how aluminium is extracted by electrolysis in the Hall-HǸroult process. They then research the science/practicalities of extracting aluminium from aluminium oxide. C3 1.1 WebQuest: The early periodic table WebQuest. Research activity in which students are asked to consider the periodic table and find out what is meant by a chemical element. They then research how scientists first attempted to find links between the known chemical elements. This leads on to students finding out about Mendeleev and the first periodic table. C3 3.5 WebQuest: Is hydrogen the perfect fuel? WebQuest. Research activity in which students consider the viability of hydrogen as a fuel, particularly for vehicles. They are asked to find out how hydrogen may be used as a fuel and to consider whether it is as environmentally friendly as some organisations suggest. C3 5.4 WebQuest: Is it time alcohol was banned? WebQuest. Research activity in which students consider the social aspects of ethanol production for human consumption. Students are asked to look at the issues surrounding alcohol consumption: alcoholism, binge drinking, health benefits and risks, and jobs. P1 1.9 WebQuest: House insulation WebQuest. P2 2.4 WebQuest: Extension: Safe driving Extension WebQuest. Students research different factors that affect the stopping distance of a car and then prepare a leaflet aimed at a target group who might be susceptible to one of the factors.

P2 6.6 WebQuest: Extension: Radioactive tracers Extension WebQuest. Students look at different sources relating to the use of radioactivity in medicine and answer questions based on the content of the sources. P3 1.1 WebQuest: Ultrasound or X-rays? WebQuest. Students research how X-ray and ultrasound scans work, consider their different uses and the risks associated with them, and finally create a short pamphlet aimed at a hospital patient who requires an X-ray or an ultrasound scan. P3 2.4 WebQuest: Stability WebQuest. Students work through a number of sources on stability, centre of mass and equilibrium, and apply what they have learnt to two or three objects/situations selected from a list provided. WebQuest: Ethical issues with DNA databases: Unit 2 WebQuest. An activity in which students carry out a research task to explore the ethical issues surrounding the use of DNA databases. WebQuest: Exploring properties of materials used in sport: Unit 2 WebQuest. An activity in which students research the properties of a range of materials used in sports equipment. WebQuest: Hunt for the world’s most unusual animal In this webquest students will carry out their own research to find out how a specific animal is adapted to the environment in which it lives. They will also find out how cement, mortar and concrete are made. Students will use their findings to produce a presentation on limestone and its uses, which they will share with fellow students.
