Editor’s Note

Soon it will be Christmas and then a brand new year! I wish you all a very happy holiday with family and friends. Drive carefully if you are travelling, especially over the mountain passes. There is talk of lots of snow again like last year, but I’ve also heard that El nino seems to be around, so guess we’ll deal with whatever comes – a little like opening Christmas presents!

Remember, there is no Leiflette in January so the next dealine is January 10th for the February issue.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Hi again District 7 members: It’s that time again, Christmas is just around the corner, with all that is involved with that celebration. Lutefisk, Pinnekjøtt, Ribbe or whatever you are used to serving and eating during the Holiday. Whatever you are having I know it will be a good and memorable meal. I have a couple of items to mention in my last message to you this year. First, as I have mentioned in my last Erik Brochmann couple of messages, the Nominating Committee for the 2018 District Lodge meeting/Convention are working on finding candidates for positions on the District Board as well as District 7 Director and Alternate to the International Board. If you are interested in any of the positions on the board listed on this page that are “up for grabs”, please contact one of the members of the committee, or myself. For your information, nominations from the floor, which has been allowed in the past are no longer permissible according to the current Sons of Norway Constitution. Name and contact information of the members of the Nominating committee were listed in last month’s Leiflette. Secondly, we will try something new for next year’s Convention. As you probably have heard, the District Lodge meeting will be shortened by one day, and we have added a training session open for delegates and other non-delegate members. It is a half day event on the afternoon of Friday May 26. We are working on the actual program for this event, and we hope to be able to present that in our next Leiflette which will be the February issue. The event is free, but you need to register using the Convention registration form, which will be provided to the lodges in the new year. This is the last opportunity to participate in the 2017 Member Recruitment Campaign as it runs out at the end of December. Make sure the application gets to Minneapolis by mid-December, so they can be registered before the end of the year. A related way of participating would be part of “The Joy of Giving the Gift of Fellowship.” Call 800-945-8851 Ext. 643 and order a gift membership to a family member or friend. Our District’s membership shows a 0.0% change compared to the membership at 31/12/2016, and stands at 1,151 adult members. Lodges that are showing a positive membership increase this year are: Eidsvold 1.7%, Sleipner 3.6%, Viking 5.6%, Trollheimen 11.1% and Hardanger 11.1%. Keep up the good work! Veronica and I wish you all a healthy, comfortable and prosperous season filled with peace, love and happiness with you family and friends! God Jul og Godt Ny År! Veronica and Erik

Lodge Updates

Sleipner Lodge #8 Vancouver, B.C. Seterkveld was a fabulous dinner with roast pork. Cooked apples, roasted potatoes, salad, sauerkraut and gravy topped it off. Beforehand, we had Rommegrot with chunks of butter and cinnamon sugar to sprinkle on top. Definitely an acquired taste – one guest ate his and his wife’s! There were over 100 guests attending, thanks to Borghild’s persistence in inviting people by the old-fashioned telephone. Thank you to Engeborg Bekken for explaining that Seterkveld used to be a dinner celebration that Norwegian farmers would have in their barn after bringing the cows home from pasture. The Rommegrot was made with a heavy cream directly from the cows. Later events included the Toonie Toss hosted by Hayley Brawn and won twice by Ron Stubbing. Way to go Ron!! After the dishes were cleared and a few tables taken away, we enjoyed the band ‘Rhythm Street.’ They played polkas, waltzes, golden oldies and later some good ol’ rock & roll. Rondane Lodge

# 71 Prince George, B.C. The October Ladies Meeting was held at the home of Rita Austad, with 17 members present. Details of the upcoming Christmas parties were discussed, but after doing them for over 50 years, most of our members, except for the new ones, know exactly what to do. The first party, will be the ladies meeting, again at the home of Unna Skuggedal, on December 7, starting at 7 pm. The next will be the Family Christmas Party on Sunday, December 15, held in the activity room, at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, starting at 1:30 pm. For more info, call Elsa, at 250-963-8707. Rita proudly showed us her first Great-grand child, a sweet little girl just 6 days old. Her name is Paisley M. Edwards. The door prize, a Manicure set, was won by our Historian and Photographer, Carol Schulte.

Karin Smale of Ronane Lodge shows off a resemaled plaque she attained from the Silent Auction. I must correct my mistake in last month`s Leiflette, where I said of Karin Smale, that she was our Financial Secretary, when it should have been Treasurer. And I must say, we treasure our Treasurer, as she has done an excellent job for many, many years. Since October is Foundation Month, after the October General Meeting on the 19, we held our annual Silent Auction, with the proceeds going to the Canadian Foundation. This year we were able to send a cheque in the amount of $179.25, which was much more than last year. Part of the reason for that, was a generous donation of nice, mostly Norwegian items

from Gwen and Bjorn Norheim, who recently sold their house and moved into a brand new senior’s apartment and were downsizing. So, a big ‘Thank You’ to Gwen and Bjorn! And also to the other members who brought and bought "stuff." Treasurer Karin Smale tells me that all our Lutefisk Dinner tickets have now been spoken for, 45 in all, and that is the maximum number of seats that Lindquist`s "Penthouse" can accommodate. With the District Convention coming up next May, I am knitting a Lillehammer sweater to enter in the Cultural Competition. I`ll have other items too. I hope many of our members also will enter items and now is a good time to start on something that is quite time consuming. We have not had snow yet, but when it comes, it’s cozy to sit inside (hopefully by a fire place), with some handiwork. Our first meeting of 2018 will be at Carmel Restaurant on January 18. It will be Installation of Officers, as well as Norwegian Sweater Night, On behalf of Rondane Lodge, I wish all Sons of Norway members near and far, a very nice Christmas and a Happy & Healthy New Year. Nordic Lodge # 76 Castlegar, B.C. Nordic Lodge lost two beloved members in the last month. Leona Szkica passed away following a short illness. An active member of our Lodge, she served as our current Marshall and was an active participant in the weekly Norwegian lessons held these last 5 years as well as with the rosemaling group and the annual Scandinavian cooking classes. A week later, member Ellen Kristiansen, daughter of Vice-President Ole Kristiansen, passed away suddenly while vacationing in Mexico. Lodge Members held a minute of silence to honour both at the November 5th meeting and reflect on their lives. Nominations were held at the November 5th meeting along with discussions on the upcoming Family Day Christmas party to be held at the Viking Cabin on November 25th. Those attending are asked to bring a dish to share for our annual turkey smorgasbord. The event begins at 11 a.m. with the singing of Christmas carols and a walk around Mud Lake. On December 3rd, a Moonlight Ski is planned at the Viking Cabin that begins at 7 p.m. For those attending, dress warm and bring sustenance. The writer made a visit to Lodge Member. Instrumental in creating ‘The Kootenay Viking’ logo with skis as the mascot for the Nordic Ski Club, she was the first Member from the Lodge to serve on the Sons of Norway District Board where she held the position of Secretary, taking part in several international Conventions with Sons of Norway, including the one held in Norway. Alice co-authored the District 7 Resource Book with Dorothy Thoen and published a Ski for Light Booklet. Looking at the may photographs Alice had on display, one really stood out – an

Obligations and Christmas were among the items to discuss. A few members were away this month. An executive meeting put the finishing touches on our annual Christmas Party which is enjoyed by all of our members and guests. This month's meeting is coming up shortly. Again we will start with potluck supper, Will be passing on the Christmas Party info. Hope to have a silent auction again. This appears to be a good fund raiser for our lodge, as well as very enjoyable for most, and a good party mixer. One of our members, Lorne McBeth, attended the Sr. Games in Vernon in September, competing in archery in the 70 and over class and brought home a gold medal. Our secretary, Gloria Carlstad, celebrated a milestone birthday October 28. Her Children gave her a party, much to her delight. Dawson Creek and Ft. St. John are hosting the Under 17 World's Hockey Challenge this week. Tickets have been selling really well, and some good hockey has been played. The challenge winds up this weekend Nov. 10 & 11th. As I sit down to write this article, it is snowing outside. Very unusual for early November, or Movember as we have called the moustache month. The temperatures are also lower than usual. We may be in for a long winter! I can imagine skiing on the local mountains, and skating on the frozen ponds. Doesn’t it make you feel great and wonderful to be alive? It is time to celebrate? Yes!! There is much planned for his winter. But first… Congratulations to Sleipner Lodge for the wonderful Seterkveld Dinner and Dance they put on for all to enjoy on October 27th! I am certain that everybody had a good time. The music was great also. Remembrance Day, Nov. 11 2017– a good time to be thankful for our veterans. I hope you all took part in all the functions that

happened. Kris Frostad carried the wreath for Viking Lodge in Whalley. Next! … Our Christmas Dinner will be on Dec. 07/17 at 11:30 am. Tickets are $25.00. Phone Jytte Kaland at 604-581-8791 if there are any tickets left. There will also be a door prize. If you could bring a donation for the Food Bank to the Christmas dinner, it would be very much appreciated. What the food bank needs is money, so they buy in bulk at a much cheaper price. Or, the 8 items that the food bank needs most are: canned protein, (fish & meat), canned fruit, canned vegetables, meal-in-a-tin, wholegrain rice or legumes, pasta & sauce, healthy canned soup, baby formula, (large tins). Please remember the ones that need your help the most. - The poor and the

helpless, the children and the seniors, the homeless and the beggars. The Food Bank desperately needs your help. So please give generously. Thank you! Ski for Light 2018 As you probably know, Sons of Norway lodges in Canada has made February (every year) the “Ski for Light Month”. The event for 2018 will take place in Vernon, B.C. from February the 5th to the 11th next year. In 2018, Ski for Light Canada also celebrates it’s 40th Anniversary, and as you know, it has always been an Out-Reach program within our Sons of Norway Organization here in Canada. As such, we have been counting on an ongoing support from all our lodges through the many years. You have always been very generous which is very much appreciated, and we continue to need your help to promote awareness of Ski for Light in your comunity. In January 2018 we will be mailing out an “Information package”, including a Pledge sheet, that we hope you will use to help raising funds and awareness about our excellent program. You can, for example, use the Pledge-sheet for such things as a 5-K “Walk or Ski-a-Ton”. We hope you and your lodge will participate, as you see fit. A tax-receipt will be issues to all the Walk/Ski-a-Ton participants, and a receipt will also be issued to individual donors, upon request. Fraternally, Curt E. Jesen, President, Ski for Light Canada, Inc.
