EDITORIAL

Statement of intent for Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics Editor-in-Chief Pallab Bhattacharya University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI, USA

As we herald a new year, the highest priority of the publishing team and the Editorial Board is to continue the exciting and positive trend in the quality and well-being of the journal. Last year we incorporated Fast Track Communication articles as an integral part of every issue, which has been a great success. We have overhauled the manuscript review process and have increased the threshold for acceptance and publication of submitted manuscripts. We continue to publish high-quality review articles and clusters of articles on topics of current interest. Following those developments, I now wish to address potential authors regarding manuscript requirements so that the published articles, in scope and content, will continue to enhance the visibility, archival quality and impact factor of the journal. There are three clear requirements: (1) articles should make a real contribution to the progress of the subject; (2) articles should contain strong analysis and discussion of their context; (3) articles should not repeat or add only incrementally to already published work. Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics now receives very many submissions annually, having doubled in size since 2005 and increased significantly in terms of impact factor. This means, of course, an increased workload for our many expert referees, and so from now on we will decline to review articles that: (1) are written in poor quality English and are therefore difficult to clearly read and understand; (2) do not appear to contain any potential for application, or do not discuss their context and implications; (3) are not within the scope of the journal. We are confident that these measures will enhance the quality of the journal and help to make J. Phys. D the premier archival journal in applied physics.
