On behalf of the Fontana Unified School District Board of Education, welcome to the 2017-2018 school year! We hope you had an enjoyable summer and that our students are looking forward to a year of learning, achievement and life changing experiences. New school years always bring change. We have new staff in leadership positions at the District Office: Ryan DiGiulio, Associate Superintendent of Business Services; Miki Inbody, Associate Superintendent of Teaching and Learning; and Gorge Santiago, Executive Director of Secondary Schools. Some of our principals have transferred to new school sites (Gerald Mullins to Oak Park Elementary School and Antonio Viramontes to Sequoia Middle School) and we have several principals who are new to our district (Edmund Barker at Locust Elementary School, Sheri Cole at North Tamarind Elementary School, and Roy Rogers at Southridge Middle School). While there have been changes, our commitment to your child’s education remains resolute. The future of our students is shaped by our focus on equipping them to graduate prepared to compete globally in the 21st Century. Our district is taking bold steps to embrace what the future holds and reimagine the learning environments and opportunities that ensure our students’ success. Parent involvement is important to the success of students in school. In order to help your children attain their goals, we encourage you to be involved in their day-to-day educational experience. In addition, we strongly encourage your participation in their school by attending Back-to-School Nights, Parent-Teacher Conferences, Open Houses, and other school activities. It is our honor to work together with you as partners in your children’s education. Sincerely,
Randal S. Bassett Superintendent

FONTANA LEADERSHIP INTERVENTION PROGRAM
ADULT EDUCATION
What is FLIP & JR. FLIP?
FAFSA FILING TIME Students are now able to submit FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Aid) starting October 1, rather than waiting until January 1 for the school year 2018/2019. The earlier submission date is a permanent change, enabling students to complete and submit a FAFSA as early as October 1 every year.
The Fontana Leadership Intervention Program (FLIP) and the Jr. Fontana Leadership Intervention Program (Jr. FLIP) are a 16-week training that offer students an opportunity to experience a unique and educational environment, which will positively influence their lives. These classes focus on topics such as; the power of education, leadership skill development, teamwork, anger management, anti-bullying, drug and alcohol resistance, health and fitness and other related fields. Field trips are also included to enhance their education and understanding of the program. Upon successful completion, students will
The only way to secure federal student aid to help you pay for college is to complete the FAFSA. It is the free financial form you complete to determine whether you are eligible to receive federal grants, loans, or work-study funds. To find out more information about Federal Student Aid, visit their website at: https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa participate in a formal graduation ceremony. Parents of FLIP and Jr. FLIP students are highly encouraged to attend our 8-week parenting classes, which include free childcare.
Are you looking for ways to boost your student’s math and reading skills? Our elementary and secondary schools will be offering Family Math and Literacy events during the 2017/18 school year. Families will be taught games and activities alongside their student to support grade level Common Core State Standards and the learning taking place at school. Each family will take home a free kit containing the various games and activities to reinforce math and reading skills. Keep an eye out of any upcoming events at your school, and we hope to see you all there! For additional information, please contact Nicole White in the Categorical Programs Department at (909) 357-5000.
FLIP and Jr. FLIP are currently accepting referrals for the 2017 fall classes that will begin in September. FLIP is open to all qualifying in-district and out of district students in 7th-12th grade. The fall Jr. FLIP class is currently open to students in the 4th, 5th, and 6th grade who are attending the following schools: Almond Elementary, Beech Elementary, Citrus Elementary, Live Oak Elementary, Poplar Elementary, Redwood Elementary, and West Randall Elementary. Spring classes for both programs will start in February of 2018. For more information, please contact Leticia Oliva at (909) 357-5000 ext. 29071. What Can It Do For You? It is never too late to achieve your dream at Fontana Adult School (FAS). Do you want to earn your high school diploma or equivalency certificate (GED, HiSET), improve your English, become a naturalized citizen, or acquire the skills needed to find or get a better job? FAS can help you launch your career and prepare for post-secondary education. We can also help FUSD high school students who are at least 16 years of age, and behind on credits, or need to retake a class for a better grade. If that is you, or your child, contact a member of the guidance staff at your high school about our concurrent enrollment program. A member of the class 2016-17 said: “I applied for a job and when I interviewed I felt the confidence FAS gave me and I now have a job I enjoy”. “I was very scared at the beginning because I did not understand a lot of English nor write it. The principal and teachers told me, ‘Don’t give up, do not quit, keep working hard,’ so I stayed and now I am graduating”. “My goal was to get my High School Equivalency to get a better job and to be a good role model for my children! I did it!” You, too, can add a success story to these! It is easy. Just stop by and enroll. Most classes are free of charge! If you or someone you know, would like to become another successful adult learner, register today! Fontana Adult School is located at 10755 Oleander Avenue, Fontana, CA 92337.
