SYNOPSIS OF INDIAN STANDARD

IS 1893 (Part 1) : 2016 CRITERIA FOR EARTHQUAKE RESISTANT DESIGN OF STRUCTURES - PART 1 GENERAL PROVISIONS AND BUILDINGS (Sixth Revision)

This standard (Part 1) primarily deals with earthquake hazard assessment for earthquake-resistant design of (a) buildings, (b) liquid retaining structures, (c) bridges, (d) embankments and retaining walls, (e) industrial and stack-like structures, and (f) concrete, masonry and earth dams. Also, this standard deals with earthquake-resistant design of buildings. Provisions on earthquake-resistant design of other structures is dealt with in other Parts of IS 1893 as follows: Part 2 : 2014 Liquid retaining tanks – Elevated and ground supported Part 3 : 2014 Bridges and retaining walls Part 4 : 2015 Industrial structures, including stack-like structures Part 5 Dams and embankments (under preparation) The provisions of this standard are applicable for design of structures like parking structures, security cabins and ancillary structures taking into account appropriate earthquake effects as per this standard. This standard is also applicable for design of temporary elements, such as scaffolding and temporary excavations. This standard does not deal with construction features relating to earthquakeresistant buildings and other structures. For guidance on earthquake-resistant construction of buildings, reference may be made to the latest revisions of the following Indian Standards: IS 4326, IS 13827, IS 13828, IS 13920, IS 13935 and IS 15988. The provisions of this standard are applicable even to critical and special structures, like nuclear power plants, petroleum refinery plants and large dams. For such structures, additional requirements may be imposed based on special studies, such as site-specific hazard assessment. In such cases, the earthquake effects specified by this standard shall be taken as the minimum. The standard includes detailed provisions on general principles and design criteria for earthquake hazard assessment such as load combinations, design acceleration spectrum to be used for determining design seismic force; detailed provisions on buildings covering therein building configurations, plan irregularities and vertical irregularities of buildings that needs to be addressed in the planning, calculation of 1 of 2

the estimated lateral force on buildings based on suggested factors including on response reduction factor and importance factors for buildings, determination of approximate fundamental translational natural period of buildings with basements, step back buildings and buildings on hill slopes, reinforced concrete frame buildings with unreinforced masonry infill walls and for those with open storeys, flat slab structures, permissible deformation limits, procedure for evaluation of liquefaction potential of soils, etc. Various maps of India depicting seismic zonation, epicentres of past earthquakes, principal tectonic features, principal lithological groups have also been provided.
