“I thank my God every time I remember you, constantly praying with joy in every one of my prayers for all of you, because of your sharing in the gospel from the first day until now. I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work among you will bring it to completion by the day of Jesus Christ. And this is my prayer, that your love may overflow more and more with knowledge and full insight to help you to determine what is best, so that on the day of Christ you may be pure and blameless, having produced the harvest of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ for the glory and praise of God” Philippians 1. 3-11

It’s hard to believe that this will be my last Gateway Letter, sounds slightly fatalistic when said like that. But indeed, these days do represent a period of transition for me and for you. There’s a famous cartoon that shows a caricature of a well known painting of Adam and Eve fleeing from the garden driven by an overarching angel with a flaming sword in his hand, gates closing behind them. And Adam is saying to Eve, “Eve, we are living in a time of transition.” Transition is never comfortable yet it’s still part and parcel of our everyday life – opportunities to look back with gratitude before moving on to the next stage of the journey. So many memories rush before me and like Frank Sinatra, regrets, we’ve had a few. Mostly things I did not do – those sins of omission, when I might have been more helpful, more available, more present. Your forgiveness and understanding have always been incredible. While we live forwards, but we understand backwards and I look back with gratitude at the invisible hand of God at work in our lives. I give thanks for the great good providence that brought us to this place - not even knowing where Beetham was. Events that at the time seemed so accidental, now with hindsight have God’s fingerprints all over them. And we are so grateful for all that followed: this church and community; school and friendships, the fellowship and the landscape. There have been so many blessings that it’s impossible to do them justice here; yet the overarching feeling is one of tremendous gratitude to God and to all of you. “I thank my God every time I remember you … all in my prayers.” At that last supper with his disciples Jesus took the simple stuff of everyday life and said, “Every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, do it in remembrance of me”. And we have those amazing words at the end of Matthew’s Gospel, “And remember that I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Jesus’ promise to be with us in all the many ways he comes to each one of us. And so in retrospect I remember all that we have shared, in the celebration of the Eucharist, in marriage of so many young couples, in the baptism of a child, in the departing of a loved one and of the friendships we have formed within this family of faith; so many cherished memories that lead us to lives of deep gratitude. It has been a privilege to serve and accompany you on your faith journey and through the many ‘rites of passage’, the highs and the lows, the joys and the sorrows, the big civic services and the intimate spaces where only two or three were gathered. “I thank my God upon every remembrance of you, and my prayers for you are always joyful, because of the part you have taken in the work from the first day until now.” One of the many things that Geoffrey and I are grateful for, is the way in which you all according to your varied gifts and interests have so willingly supported our ministry here, but even more than that, you have enthusiastically shared in it. Together we have served one another as family and as friends. Together we have reached out to meet the needs of others and build up the community of faith. Gratitude is every bit as important as hope, and now it is with hope that you move towards a new and exciting future. God already knows who he has chosen to lead you. It is only for you now to go out and find him or her. And you will. We will know sadness at this time of transition, but then we will get on with it. The future of this unique, embracing, inclusive, active, family of faith, God’s incredible gift to you for years to come; “And this is my prayer for you all, that your love for one another may grow even richer in knowledge and insight of every kind, enabling you to learn by experience the things that really matter.” Embrace the future.

My prayers and God’s blessing to you all, Revd Linda

CHURCH Garden Party This year the sun shone for the Parsonage Garden Party and everyone enjoyed their st rawb e r r y a ft e rn o o n tea outdoors. As it followed on from the Flower Festival, the Jane Austen theme was continued, with period costume and a raffle with Jane Austen related prizes. Entertainment was provided again by the Beetham Church Handbellringers, whilst the Friends Committee beavered away making tea and taking delicious strawberry cakes and scon es around t he garden to each table. The raffle and donations raised an incredible £305 for church funds thanks to Kathleen Dodd’s ability to cajole money from us all! Thank you to all those involved in the organisation and catering, and a special thank you to Revd Linda and Geoffrey for once again opening up their lovely garden and home for the occasion

Magnificent China Some time ago one of our organists, John Falkingham, bravely offered to give us an illustrated travelogue of his trip to China. The suggestion then came that we could combine it with a Chinese meal, and the resulting ‘Magnificent China’ evening was organised for 23rd June This was the first time that we had held an event in the M:Hub in Milnthorpe and it proved to be a very social venue. The Chinese banquet was provided by Jumbo in Milnthorpe and looked as if we had ordered for twice as many – but amazingly the food disappeared John, and his wife Liz, have travelled extensively and his enthusiasm for China showed clearly in his entertaining whistle-stop tour of many different locations across this vast country. Accompanied by beautiful photography and videos, he brought the culture and landscape alive, and our thanks go to him for giving us such a lovely evening Thanks also go to the Friends Committee for organising the event, and for all who contributed to the China-themed raffle. A ‘magnificent’ £245 was raised for church funds

The Friends of Beetham Church ‘The Friends of Beetham Church’ hold fundraising events throughout the year. Although the aim is to raise money for the church, we are keen to maintain and further develop the strong sense of community that exists in and around St Michael & All Angels. All our events aim to be enjoyable - we invite you to come and see for yourself! In a typical year events organised by the Friends will include the Shrove Tuesday & Harvest Suppers, the Duck Race on the River Bela, the Flower Festival, a Garden Party, and at least one Concert. Members are all invited to the annual Friends Sunday celebrations Membership is either by Annual subscription of £10, or a one-off payment of £100 for Life membership (£150 for joint Life members), and all subscriptions go direct to the Beetham Church Heritage Trust*

Ringing Visitors to Beetham Church Tower On Saturday 13th May we were pleased to welcome a group of ringers from Lytham St Annes. The Beetham Ringers had visited Lytham in 2016 and offered a return visit. Organised by St John’s Lytham this visit was combined with a canal trip - although it was a very wet morning the rain did luckily ease off for them! The group enjoyed it so much, that on 10th June another group, organised by St Joseph’s Lytham, did the same — again in the rain, but they too had a pleasurable day!

CHIMES The Changing of the Seasons We welcomed Revd Linda and Geoffrey Lonsdale to Beetham in Autumn 2013. Following her Licensing and Installation on 11th October, Revd Linda’s first ’Letter’ for The Gateway in November 2013 opened with the lines “In the midst of our ever-changing world, one of the few things that remain consistent is the changing of the seasons. We felt truly blessed to arrive here at Beetham in late September just as the trees were starting to change colour”. Since then the trees have changed colour many times, but the constant has been the warmth and thoughtfulness of Linda’s Letter on our front cover of The Gateway every month for the past four years. The inside pages of The Gateway have also seen the changing of the seasons for both Linda and Geoffrey, and we celebrate their joint contribution to our church and community in their time with us In worship we have seen Linda’s encouragement and nurturing of our four Worship Leaders - Vivien, David, Theresa, and Chris. Last month we were delighted to welcome Bishop Robert to a special God for All service where he commissioned Viv as a Local Lay Minister. In September 2016 we celebrated our 950th anniversary Patronal Festival, where Bishop James blessed our newly restored banner of St Michael. Other special services have drawn in new visitors to church, particularly at Christmas and Easter time, and new traditions have begun, such as the decorating of Sandy’s cross Revd Linda has made closer links with Beetham CE School by regularly inviting them into church and involving the children in learning more about different aspects of our church year - by giving them experiences of Baptism and Communion, releasing an Ascension balloon, Christmas nativity, Harvest, Ash Wednesday participation, Lent Clubs and Easter stories. And particularly involving Pepper the donkey of course! At school Linda has been an active volunteer and school governor

For the very young children Linda has also organised a monthly Edward Bear Club with Bible stories and fun activities in the church Linda and Geoffrey arrived in Beetham just in time to experience their first Harvest Supper, entertained with one of Sandy Lofthouse’s famous plays! They must have wondered what they were coming into, but they have returned to all the Harvest and Shrove Tuesday Suppers since then. Involvement in fundraising, garden parties, music, church fabric work days, and community events has been a regular occurrence, and we were also delighted when Geoffrey joined the handbellringers, but perhaps the most unexpected involvement has been mopping up the church after flooding on several occasions...

If you would like to join in the fun whilst playing a part in maintaining our beautiful church for future generations please complete the membership form (available from church or the website) beethamstmichaelandallangels.co.uk *The Beetham Church Heritage Trust is a registered charity whose aim is: "to maintain, restore, preserve, enhance and reconstruct as necessary the fabric, furnishings, fixtures and fittings of the parish church by means of a range of fun and fundraising events”

We would like to thank you both for all that you have done, and wish you a happy retirement back in Cheshire PAGE 5

We have had a really busy few weeks at school with lots of exciting activities and events… Reception and KS1 enjoyed a super day out in Windermere. They watched a puppet show at ‘The Beatrix Potter Attraction’ and then travelled by boat to ‘The Aquarium’ at Lakeside. It was a beautiful day and the children really enjoyed themselves. KS2 are studying ‘The Victorians’ and so we organised a Victorian school day to try and give them a flavour of what school was like back in the 1800’s. The classroom was transformed into a dull, electricity free environment with slates and a blackboard! Children and staff dressed in Victorian costumes and brought Victorian style packed lunches. The biggest shock for the children was not being able to speak unless they were spoken to and having to stand up when addressing a teacher or when an adult came into the room. Playtimes were separate for girls and boys and even some lessons – needlework/woodwork! Several children ended up in the dunces corner and there were a few tears but thankfully no canes!! We were delighted that ‘Yakkers’ from Lakeland Radio came along dressed as the School Inspector. He then recorded interviews with the children which are available to listen to on ‘Back to School’ on the radio’s website. We have a beautiful photograph in school taken outside the Old School, now the Heron Theatre, which was taken in 1898. We recreated the photo and I’m sure you will agree it is very authentic! As we near the end of term we are looking forward to our Sports Day, Summer Performance in the Heron Theatre and also our Leavers’ Service. This will be held in church on Wednesday 19th July at 2pm. It would be lovely if members of the church and village community could join us to wish our Yr 6 children well, ready for their move to secondary school. So as our school year comes to an end I would like to wish you all a lovely summer on behalf of the children, staff and governors at Beetham CE Primary School.

BEETHAM PARISH COUNCIL NEWSLETTER, ISSUE No 30 JAN – JUN 2017 The BPC map board project, as mentioned in earlier Newsletters, remains very much work in progress but is now nearing conclusion. Two such boards are to be sited in East Ward and two in West Ward, with content amended to reflect this. The AONB is effectively managing the project and BPC members have been assigned to provide BPC input. Similarly, the project to refurbish a historically important fingerpost at Slackhead is progressing well and the opportunity is being taken to move it slightly, to a better position. The defibrillator project for Beetham village is also progressing. As reported in previous BPC newsletters, the Stanley Street phone box remains a likely location, but Beetham School premises have also been offered as an alternative. The school is also hopeful of sourcing purchase of the equipment at a useful discount through Department of Education channels. At Sandside, a post to carry a Speed Indicator Device (SID) is finally in place and the loaned equipment should soon be seen in operation there. Superfast broadband has finally reached the parish, with a cabinet carrying the main cables recently installed in Storth. From this point, extensions will soon be available to most households in the village. This development was announced at the Beetham Annual Assembly at the Heron Theatre in March, when the development organisation B4RN gave an interesting presentation and answered a wide range of questions from a sizeable and well-informed audience. Informal discussions continued over refreshments, following the presentation. BPC’s annual accounts for 2016/17 showed a small surplus, against a budgeted break-even, and were approved at the May meeting. The budget for 2017/18 was very much along the same lines, with the Precept (and its Council Tax effect) reflecting this. At the Annual Meeting in May, Cllr Brian Meakin was re-elected as BPC Chair and Cllr Pru Jupe as Vice-chair for 2017/18. Along with routine PC business, it was agreed that BPC would give better future publicity to the grants it could make available for deserving projects and organisations within the parish. BPC has an annual budget for such grants, which are awarded annually at its March meeting. Applications may be made via the Clerk at any time during the year to 31 March. The Beetham Hall crematorium is now in full operation and, although external ground works are ongoing, all planning conditions attaching to this development are confirmed by SLDC as having been satisfied. A public meeting to discuss flooding issues in the parish was to have been held on 22 June, but is now rescheduled for Monday 10 July at The Heron Theatre. Clerk: Mr J R Scargill 01524 782811 Chair: Dr B C Meakin 015395 65722
