4. FIRE CLASSES LITHIUM B ATTERY FIRES Lithium batteries present a more frequent fire hazard each day as the number of consumer and industrial goods powered by Lithium batteries increases. Although the risk of a Lithium battery fire is not widely considered, the potential for a fire exists in many everyday situations.

The typical mechanisms that cause a fire to start in a Lithium battery are as follows: • • •

Physical damage / impact Over charging Heat exposure

If any of the three above mechanisms become critical, the electrolyte in the battery cell will start a chemical reaction that produces flammable gases and when the critical oxygen gas mix is reached with sufficient internal heat generation the device will burst into flames.

8

A few examples of typical consumer goods and industrial goods that are classified as a fire hazard include: • Mobile phones and portable computing equipment • Children’s toys • Electric bikes and scooters • Radio controlled vehicles, watercraft, aircraft • Power tools • Radio communication equipment • Health service and hospital monitoring and test equipment This risk is further exacerbated by low quality and poorly manufactured batteries coming from low cost countries, most frequently in Asia. The overcharge protection is often not present on these batteries and the quality of manufacture renders them more prone to failure due to physical impact or damage. Testing has shown that typical water, powder and foam extinguishing agents are not effective in extinguishing Lithium battery fires. Testing has proven Lith-EX to be effective in suppressing and extinguishing Lithium battery fires in line with a test protocol developed by battery testing experts ZSW GmbH.

9

Where does a safety case exist to justify the installation of Lith-EX aerosol extinguishers? Lithium batteries are being used more and more extensively around the home, in mobile phones, childrens toys, tablets and laptops, they tend to be charged overnight quite often in the bedroom. Cordless tools and many other items of rechargeable equipment are becoming more popular and the risk of damage or overcharge is always a concern. Each of these pieces of equipment has the potential to overheat and become a serious fire hazard. A quick, portable extinguisher which is effective against a Lithium battery fire is essential; Fire Champion is the ideal product. There are also many public places where there is a risk of a Lithium battery fire, for example, areas where there are large gatherings of people in confined spaces. Evacuation of the area is often difficult or even impossible, such as on an aircraft.

7. LITH-EX USER INSTRUCTIONS Fire Champion Products: LITH-EX Aerosol Extinguisher INSTALLATION & USE OF YOUR EXTINGUISHER IN CASE OF FIRE 1. Get everybody out and well clear of danger. 2. Always call the fire brigade by dialling 999. 3. Close all doors on your way out. Do not stop to collect personal belongings. 4. REMEMBER- Personal safety comes first. 5. If the fire is small enough use your Fire Champion Extinguisher. NOTE- If you cannot approach the fire within 6 to 8 feet it is too large. FIGHTING THE FIRE Lith-EX Fire Extinguishers are safe to use on all small personal devices. For details of fire fighting classification see your extinguisher. 1. Check on the product label the fire classification/type of the extinguisher is appropriate for the fire being targeted. 2. Shake before use then remove yellow safety wedge/safety pin. 3. Holding the extinguisher UPRIGHT, aim at base of the fire from 6 to 8 feet, and press the lever. 4. Sweep from side to side to cover the complete area of the fire. 5. Release lever to stop flow - check for any glowing embers 6. Leave the area and ventilate - Fire can give off toxic fumes.

14

INSTALLATION Always mount your extinguisher securely using the bracket provided. Site the extinguisher where it can be seen, near likely sources of fire. MOST IMPORTANTLY site it where it can be reached easily in case of fire, always ensuring that the user is between the route to safety and the fire. NEVER ALLOW THE FIRE TO BE BETWEEN YOU AND THE EXIT. In the Home In the hallway or landing, in the kitchen, ideally have at least one extinguisher on each floor. In the Garage On the wall at shoulder height - near the doorway. In the Car Inside the car in the driver’s or passenger’s footwell. Not in the boot searching the boot for your extinguisher will waste valuable time. In the Boat Somewhere protected from splashing but readily to hand such as inside the hatch or companion way. In the Caravan Near the doorway, ensuring that the extinguisher is readily accessible and protected from accidental damage. WARNINGS Do not fight fire involving mains or bottled gas. If possible shut off the gas at source and evacuate immediately - warn the fire brigade that gas is involved.

15

MAINTENANCE Factory Sealed Units Your Fire Champion extinguisher requires very little maintenance but should be checked at regular intervals as follows: 1. Check that the tamper seal tie and yellow wedge are in position and intact. 2. Ensure that the nozzle is not obstructed. 3. If your extinguisher is fitted with a pressure gauge check that the pointer is in the green section (at reference temperature 20 degrees C/68 degrees F). Refillable Units Your Fire Champion extinguisher is NOT refillable, it is one time use only. NOTE - DO NOT PRE-TEST YOUR EXTINGUISHER. THIS WILL RENDER IT INOPERATIVE. 9. FAQ WHAT IS A FIRE CHAMPION EXTINGUISHER? It is an aerosol that is a self contained extinguishing unit which contains Aqueous Vermiculite Dispersion extinguishing agent used in conjunction with a propellant. WHAT IS AQUEOUS VERMICULITE DISPERSION? Aqueous Vermiculite Dispersion (AVD) fire extinguishing agent is a new, revolutionary technology that has key benefits over existing solutions utilising fixed and portable delivery techniques. AVD is an aqueous dispersion of Vermiculite that can be deployed as a mist. Vermiculite is the name given to a group of hydrated laminar minerals which are Aluminium-Iron-Magnesium Silicates. Raw vermiculite consists of thin, flat flakes containing microscopic layers of water. HOW DOES IT EXTINGUISH THE FIRE? AVD is applied in the form of a mist. The Vermiculite particles within the mist are deposited on the surface of the burning fuel to create a film over the top of the fire. This film instantly dries and because the high aspect ratio platelet particles overlap and bind together, they produce a non flammable oxygen barrier between the fire and the atmosphere. ARE THE AEROSOL EXTINGUISHERS REFILLABLE AFTER DISCHARGE? No. The units are designed for single use only. HOW EFFECTIVE IS IT? It is ideal for small fires which are not yet deep seated.

17

WHAT IS THE SERVICE LIFE OF FIRE CHAMPION FIRE EXTINGUISHERS? The service life of the Fire Champion range is three years. IS IT SAFE FOR PERSONNEL? The aerosol itself is safe, however the unknown, and potentially harmful, by-products of an actual fire pose the biggest risk to people. IS THE UNIT PRESSURISED? Yes to 11 bar. IS IT ACCREDITED OR CERTIFIED? At present there is no BS-EN or UL test protocol or standard for extinguishing Lithium batteries. Dupré Minerals in conjunction with ZSW GmbH have developed a test protocol. The Lith-EX extinguisher has been tested in accordance with this test method and consecutively extinguished three fires. 35 kV Dielectric Test: Tested according to BS EN 3-7: 2008 at Apragaz Belgium. Class A: AVD-Li extinguishing agent has been independently tested and accredited to 21A when applied from a 9 litre extinguisher in accordance with BS EN 3-7:2008 Manufactured in accordance to BS6165:2002 for aerosol fire extinguishers.

18
