CHAPTER 1

According to Larson (1984) at least there are four problems when it comes to translation there are lexical, grammatical, situational, and cultural. Larson (1984:3) “a translation consists of transferring the meaning of the source language into the receptor language. This is done by going from the

form of the first language to the form of the second language by way of semantic structure. It is the meaning which is being transferred and must be held constant. Only the form changes. The form from which translation is made will be called the source language and the form into which it is to be changed to will be called the receptor language.”

English phrasal verbs can not be translate with word-for-word translation,

because phrasal verbs are unique items and cannot be translate by each word. According to Wyatt “a phrasal verb is a verb formed from two (or sometimes three) parts: a verb and an adverb or preposition. These adverbs and prepositions are often called particles when they are used in

a phrasal verb.” (Wyatt, 2006:3).

Shifting in translation is the changes in form that can be completely different form from source language to target language. It can change or not change the form of source language whether it is grammar, phrase, or anything that become natural equivalent in

target language. “a shift is the departure from formal correspondence in the process of going from the source language to the target language.” Catford (1965:73). Problem Formulation

1.How is the translation of English phrasal verbs into Indonesian related to unit shifts? 2. What translation techniques are used in translating phrasal verbs into Indonesian which leads to unit shift?

Scope of the Research This research only focuses on the analysis of the translation techniques that used

and unit translation shifts of phrasal verbs in Twilight novel by Stephenie Meyer.

CHAPTER 3 This research use qualitative research. According to Clissett (2008 ,p.100) “qualitative research covers a wide range of approaches for the exploration

of

“human

experience,

perceptions,

motivations

and

behaviors” and is concerned with the collection and analysis of words whether in the form of speech or writing.”

Source of The Data The data used in this research are divided into two; primary and secondary data. The primary data are English and Indonesian versions of Twilight novel by Stephenie Meyer.

The secondary data are and PDF of Cadford entitled a linguistic theory of translation, Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary, Google for references such as journals, E-books, PDF for previous research.

Technique of Collecting Data 1.Read the Twilight novel and its translation 2. Underline the phrasal verbs and its translation 3.3. Classify the unit data into types of translation techniques 4.4. Put the data in a table

Technique of Analyzing Data 1. Classify and analyzed the data found into unit shifts based on Catford’s theories 2. Classify and analyzed the data based on the techniques found based on Molina and Albir’s classifications

CHAPTER 4 The data will be analyzed by using Molina and Albir translation techniques and Catford unit shift theory. Based on the data analysis the translator using Established Equivalent and Discursive Creation techniques to translate English phrasal verbs and all of the data have undergone unit

shifts from phrase into word. As mentioned the data analysis will be presented in the following.

1.

Source Language 1. “Bella,” my mom said to me — the last of a thousand times — before I got on the plane. (p.4)

Target Language Shift Translation Techniques “Bella,” ibuku Phrase - Word Established Equivalent berkata — untuk terakhir kali dari ribuan kali ia mengatakannya —sebelum aku naik pesawat. (p.16)

Analysis:

The phrasal verbs ‘got on’ is translated into ‘naik’ which means that it is undergone unit shift from phrase into word. There is no change in term of class word. The technique which the translator used is Established Equivalent because ‘got on’ is stated as a proper equivalent in the dictionary so it becomes reference for translator to choose ‘naik’ as the proper word in context

2. Source Language 1. I

kept my face pulled back into my hood as I walked to the sidewalk, crowded with teenagers. (p.1415)

Target Language

Shift

Translation Techniques

Aku biarkan wajahku tersamarkan tudung jaket ketika berjalan melintasi troroar yang dipenuhi remaja. (p.27)

Phrase - Word

Discursive Creation

Analysis: The phrasal verb ‘pulled back’ is translated into ‘tersamarkan’ which means that it is undergone unit shift from phrase into word. There is no change in term of class word. The technique

used is Discursive Creation because in this case ‘pulled back’ is not translated in general in target language as ‘tersamarkan’ the context change the meaning and it is not always like that. It is temporary translation which reflects the meaning in context.

CHAPTER 5 Conclusion The aims of this research are to find out about what unit shift in English phrasal verbs translated into Indonesian and what techniques translation are used to translate English phrasal verbs. This research done by using translation techniques from Molina and Albir (2002) and unit shift by Catford’s theory (1965). From the source of the data, the researcher collected 200 data from Twilight novel by Stephenie Meyer. Therefore, the result in this research revealed that all data undergone unit shift from phrase into word. The translation tends to use two techniques there are Established Equivalent, and Discursive Creation.

Suggestion The suggestion that the researcher can conclude from phrasal verbs in Twilight novel is there are many topic to analyze such as on particular verbs in phrasal verbs such as put, take, get, or make. It could also in shifting translation in phrasal verbs on class shift, or structure shift or translation method used could affect the result in target language. It could be a further discussion about it for EFL in order to conduct a research.
