Dear Friends Within the scriptures there are a good many visions offered by the prophets and writers of the scriptures: In those visions received by the recipient, live the hopes and dreams and expectations of the prophet and a people. It is a way of saying to the people: do not lose hope… keep on keeping on in faith that God is at work, and we as a people are not forsaken. The future is in God’s hands. From Ezekiel’s vision in the valley of the dry bones, whose only hope for revival of a people whose future was in jeopardy was the Spirit of God; to Isaiah’s announcement that God would do a new thing and it would spring forth; “Shall you not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert;” to the writer of Revelation 21, who proclaimed in the midst of persecution : “Then I saw ‘a new heaven and a new earth,’ for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. 2 I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. 3And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. 4 He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” 5 He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.” Alongside the visions of the prophets that inspired the people to hope, there is the vision we each have for our lives and life itself. It motivates us, inspires us and ultimately influences our choices and decisions: that is, how we will live out our lives. In Luke 4, Jesus proclaimed the vision for his ministry to his home town crowd: 16 When he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read, 17 and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written: 18 ‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.’ 20 And he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. Indeed that would serve as his mission and vision statement for his life and ministry. He would enlist others such as you and me to share in that mission and vision and to have our lives shaped by it. So wherein lies our hope for the living of our days? Is it in the God of the prophets, such as Ezekiel or Isaiah, or in the God of John—the author of Revelation. All trusted in their God for the future. In the living of our days, wherein do we gain our inspiration and our hope? What is it and who is it that shapes our lives; informs our decisions and choices; and provides, as it becomes intertwined with our lives the challenge to include a vision and a mission that is grander and more encompassing than the one that may include only ourselves. Portland’s own The Bible Project will provide another point of view in “How to Read the Bible: The Story of the Bible”.
Did you know January is National Soup Month? Well, now you do! And we will celebrate our own “Souper Bowl Sunday” by filling Big Blue with all kinds of SOUP on Sunday, February 4th. Our “Souper Bowl Sunday” coincides with that other national “Super” day! So start watching for sales on soup, stock up, and bring your soup on February 4th. We will fill the shelves at Table of Plenty with hearty winter soup choices, while we celebrate Soup Month, and, of course, the all-American Super Bowl Sunday!

WINTER IHN HOSTING IN FEBRUARY
Westminster hosted IHN homeless families the last time in August, and our turn is coming up again. In this ministry, we welcome families in need of emergency housing to our church every evening for a week. They sleep, warm and safe, in the church and we provide nourishing dinners when they arrive and a good breakfast before they leave in the morning.
We will host the week of February 25, so we hope you’ll save that week on your calendar. Many volunteers will be needed to provide meals, as well as to be present at the church to host families. Interfaith Hospitality Network coordinates with 17 churches, including ours, to help families without homes to regain independence and build new lives. Their staff works with families on job searches, budgeting, parenting and other support which leads to permanent positive changes in their lives, most importantly housing. As a church, hospitality and serving are key principles as we seek to follow Jesus. Our role is to relieve suffering immediately, while the staff can work long term to help families truly build new lives. Serving together to make a difference to kids and parents who are in crisis is such a great use of time and energy—as well as an expression of our faith!
