What Is the Certificate of Progress Program (COPP)? The Certificate of Progress Program is a highly structured Christian Leadership educational program of the National Baptist Convention USA, Inc. The program is designed to produce qualified church leaders that are qualified to lead church members of the NBC USA, Inc. in and beyond the 21st century. The Sunday School Publishing Board provides the programs of study that supports the National Baptist Convention USA, Inc. The Division of Christian Education and Accreditation and Credentials (DCEAC) provides direction and oversight of all Christian Leadership Schools (CLS). COPP program courses are taught at CLS.

History of the COPP Program The Certificate of Progress Program, organized at the Sunday School Publishing Board in October 1937, was designed to produce qualified teacher that would lead church members into the twentyfirst century. Dr. Marshall A. Talley has been credited as the person that instituted the COP Program. In 1978, Dr. Amos Jones, Jr., undertook the leadership of the COP Program to take it to new heights

To increase biblical knowledge; To create an understanding of the Baptist Church To provide an educational structure that will develop candidates qualified for teaching and leadership positions. To provide incentives for the candidates to complete the program; and To produce trained church leaders.

Complete and submit the required forms – Admissions Application for Certificate of Progress Program is required

Subscribe to the Christian Education Informer magazine ($30.00 fee for 1yr. subscription)*

In order to become certifiable to teach in a certified school, an individual must have completed:  Phase 1 Certificate of Progress,**  #2023 Creative Ways of Teaching,**  #9008 Public Speaking**  Form 5 – Application for Certification of Instructor  Current subscription to the Christian Education Informer  Appropriate Fees Paid  Current subscription to the Informer

PATP Phases and Required Courses

Pastor’s Alternative for Teacher Certification (PATC)

PHASE 2 Because pastors have experience in leading and teaching, an alternative program of certification has been developed. Pastors with five or more years of pastoral experience are eligible for the program. Pastors will be required to satisfy 15 hrs. of training in the( phase 1) alternative program. Upon completion of the PATC program, a certificate of completion will be awarded, and the pastor becomes certifiable to become an instructor. Consult with the CLS Dean(s)

Pastor’s Advanced Training Program (PATP) Pastors certified through the PATC program can continue their Christian education growth through the Advanced Pastor’s Training program. The programs consist of phases 2 through 4. Pastors who complete the PATP all 4 phases will be awarded a Diploma of Pastoral Studies through the Sunday School Publishing Board (SSPB). Applicants for the PATP must meet certain qualifications and requirements; a standard fee established by the SSPB is required for each phase prior to completion. Consult with the CLS Dean(s). **The SSPB will also take seminary and/or college equivalent for all courses. A transcript will be needed. [Your Dean of Record will assist you with this process.]
