Group 1: asymptomatic or persistent generalized lymphadenopathy – normal activity Group 2: early-stage disease – weight loss <10 per cent of body weight, minor mucocutaneous manifestations, herpes zoster within 5 years, recure upper respiratory tract infections, symptomatic but normal activity. Group 3: intermediate stage disease – weight loss >10 per cent of body weight, unexplained chronic diarrhoea for more than1 month, infected prolonged fever for more than 1 month, oral candidiasis, oral hairy leucoplakia, pulmonary tuberculosis within 1 year, severe bacterial infection and/or bedridden less than 50 per cent of the day during the previous month. Group 4: late-stage disease – definite or presumptive diagnosis of any AIDS defining illness, according to the Centers for Disease Control the surveillance definition and/or bedridden for more than 50 per cent of the day during the previous month.
