Accent (NuVoice v1.07) Using the Accent Speech Generating Device to Write in WordPad

Introduction The Accent is an integrated voice output communication device. It comes in a variety of sizes: 700, 1000 and 1200. It runs on NuVoice software and a variety of Unity setups are included. Communication messages or text created in the Accent can be exported into WordPad. This tutorial assumes the reader: • •

Has access to an Accent device using NuVoice software and knows the basic functions of this device including creating messages and accessing the Toolbox Has a basic knowledge of word processing.

Learning Objectives Completion of this tutorial will give you experience with the following: • •

Navigate between NuVoice software and WordPad Send text created in NuVoice software WordPad.

Case Study Taylor is an 11 year old student with cerebral palsy. He is non-verbal and uses an Accent 1200 with the Unity 60 sequenced setup. He can formulate grammatically correct sentences which average from 5 - 7 words in length. The Accent is mounted to his wheelchair and he accesses it directly with his right index finger. Taylor cannot write with paper and pencil or access a computer to type. At present, his educational assistant scribes content he speaks using his Accent. His objective is to independently write paragraph length output to demonstrate his knowledge across subjective areas 4 out of 5 consecutive probes.

Launch the NuVoice software. (This demonstration uses the Unity 60 sequenced user area.)

Select the Tools key in the top right corner.

From the pop-up menu, Select the small blue button in the top right corner, then Select Display Mode. Select Device Mode.

Open a WordPad

From the Activity Row, Select COMPUTER ACCESS.

Select INTERNAL COMPUTER.

Select PROGRAMS.

The NuVoice software will minimize.

Select WORDPAD.

Select START WORDPAD. A blank WordPad document will appear on the screen over the taskbar.

Select TYPE IN CORE in the bottom taskbar to return to the NuVoice full screen for writing.

Formulate in NuVoice 1

Formulate what you want to write in the NuVoice software. One or several sentences can be done at a time.

Navigate to WordPad by selecting GO BACK WORDPAD in the Activity Row.

NuVoice will minimize with only the taskbar at the bottom of the page. You will see your message has printed in WordPad.

Select TYPE IN CORE from the bottom taskbar to return to the full NuVoice screen.

Write some more

Clear your first message from the message window. Formulate your next sentence or sentences.

Navigate back to WordPad by selecting the GO BACK WORDPAD button in the Activity Row.

Your message will have printed into WordPad. Save your work in WordPad by selecting Save from the File menu.

Think of the text you want to write next. Repeat the process.

Tip…Once you have discovered that your messages will be automatically printed, there is no need to go back to WordPad as frequently.
